Singles

Rihanna still wears the #1 crown with S.O.S. while The Young Divas jump five spots to #2 with This Time I Know It's For Real. The boys from TV Rock sit at #3 with Flaunt It and the lads from Gnarls Barkley are just behind at #4 for their second week running with Crazy. No new entries or real upsets in the top 10 this week.

 

BLACK FINGERNAILS, RED WINE

Artist: Eskimo Joe Position: No.13

Black Fingernails, Red Wine is the title track from Eskimo Joe 's forthcoming album. The boys from Fremantle , Western Australia – Kav , Joel and Stuart – had not had much success on the singles chart prior to 2004. Singles Planet Earth , Who Solder Her Out and Liar all failed to capture the Aussie music audience's attention. However From The Sea (the title track from 2004's album) boosted Eskimo Joe 's star into the stratosphere. It peaked at #33 (May '04) and the follow-up single Older Than You reached #46 (Oct. '04). They picked up the Best Group award at last year's ARIA Awards – a far cry from winning the National Uni band competition which launched their career.

 

DON'T YOU THINK IT'S TIME?

Artist: Bob Evans Position: No.22

Don't You Think It's Time? is the first single to be taken from Bob Evans ' second album Suburban Songbook . Evans is better known as Kevin Mitchell of Australian rock band Jebediah . It is Evans ' first release of any kind to break the Top 100. All tracks on Evans ' new album feature ex- Wilco drummer Ken Coome on drums.

 

I'M WITH STUPID

Artist: Pet Shop Boys Position: No.23

Are your synthesizers ready?? Dance-pop maestros Pet Shop Boys are back after being in the business for 25 years. Forming in 1981, vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe named their band after friends of theirs that worked in a pet shop. They have gone on to pioneer modern dance music trends and are responsible for many hit singles, including Where The Streets Have No Name (a U2 cover) which peaked at #9 (May '91), Go West which reached #10 (Nov. '93) and Before which got to #25 (May '96).

 

SERIAL THRILLER

Artist: Brielle Davis Position: No.44

Brielle Davis was the youngest ever Golden Guitar nominee who started her career by appearing in the Schools Spectacular, Christmas pageants and carols nights, charity and community fundraisers and various venues along the club circuit. Davis was the first performer to sing the Australian national anthem in Stadium Australia at Olympic Park. The 21 year old has worked with veteran rock chick Chrissy Amphlett of The Divinyls on her recent recordings.

 

SO OVER YOU

Artist: Paulini Position: No.50

A fter coming fourth in the Australian Idol competition which saw Guy Sebastian take the Idol title, Paulini has forged her own successful solo career. Her music career began in church where she was a choir girl. Since Idol, Paulini has had a number of Top 100 singles – Angel Eyes (#1, Jul. '04), We Can Try (#30, Oct. '04) and Rough Day (#26, Jan. '06). Paulini is rumoured to be a part of the new television program It Takes Two where celebrities are taught to sing duets with successful Aussie artists. She is part of The Young Divas (along with fellow idols Kate De Araugo, Ricky Lee and Emily Williams), whose single This Time I Know It's For Real is at #2 this week.

 

PUT 'EM IN THEIR PLACE

Artist: Mobb Deep Position: No.60

Mobb Deep is Havoc and Prodigy , a hip-hop duo who went to high school together in New York . Their environment which involved drugs, poverty and gang violence led them to rapping and rhyming. After being signed to 50 Cent 's G-Unit label, the boys were given different pseudonyms encompassing G-Unit's flamboyant and wealth-driven personality – Havoc became Hollywood and Prodigy became V.I.P. The pair has been compared to the likes of Jay-Z, Nas and Wu-Tang Clan.

 

FIRST DAY OF MY LIFE

Artist: Melanie C. Position: No.66

Arguably the most successful Spice Girl , Melanie C has experienced the joys of a thriving musical career after the phenomenal girl group split up. Many believed she had the best voice of the five girls. The former Sporty Spice has teamed up with Bryan Adams and the late Lisa ‘Left-Eye' Lopez on her tracks in the past. The single When You're Gone with Adams peaked at #4 (Jan. '99), Never Be The Same Again reached #2 (May '00), I Turn To You got to #11 (Sep. '00) and Next Best Superstar peaked at #41 (Apr. '05).

 

Albums

Red Hot Chili Peppers fly into the #1 position this week with their new album Stadium Arcadium . This in turn pushes last week's Mother's Day chart winners Human Nature (with Reach Out: The Motown Record) and James Blunt (Back To Bedlam) down to #2 and #3 respectively. Stadium Arcadium takes the Chili Pepper's tally of top 10 albums to 9 while the other new entry in the top 10, St. Elsewhere is the first for US dance duo Gnarls Barkley.

 

STADIUM ARCADIUM

Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers Position:No.1

This is the Red Hot Chili Peppers ' fifth #1 album, with others being Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Apr. '92), One Hot Minute (Oct. '95), Californication (Jun. '99) and By The Way (Jul. '02). Stadium Arcadium was recorded in the same house that delivered the classic Blood Sugar Sex Magik . It is a double album, the first CD being dubbed Jupiter and the second Mars . The Chili Peppers are Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Michael “Flea†Balzary (bass), John Frusciante (guitar) and Chad Smith (drums). Flea has ventured into acting in recent years and Frusciante has released a few solo albums.

 

ST. ELSEWHERE

Artist: Gnarls Barkley Position: No.7

Gnarls Barkley are Brian Burton and Thomas Colloway – better known as Danger Mouse and Cee Lo – two lads who brought us the single Crazy , which sits this week at #4 on the singles chart. Danger Mouse is a renowned producer, producing Demon Days by the Gorillaz and Cee Lo a vocalist. Together they produce some of the most contemporary dance music around.

 

CONVICTS

Artist: You Am I Position: No.11

This rock band from Oz have toured with rock legends The Who and Rolling Stones , have three ARIA #1 albums to their credit, wrote the soundtracks to two Aussie films and have bagged a total of seven ARIA Awards. Phew! Previous chart success includes the albums Hi Fi Way (#1, Feb. '95), Hourly Daily (#1, Jul. '96), You Am I's #4 Record (#1, Jun. '98), Saturday Night, ‘Round Ten (#7, Oct. '99), Dress Me Slowly (#3, May '01), Deliverance (#12, Oct. '02) and The Cream And The Crock – The Best Of You Am I (#12, Oct. '03).

 

BROKEN BOY SOLDIERS

Artist: The Saboteurs Position: No.14

The Saboteurs are known as The Raconteurs everywhere around the world except Australia as there is already a jazz band here by that name. The band consists of Brendan Benson and Jack White (he of the White Stripes ) who share vocal duties and Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence of the band The Greenhornes. Their debut single Steady, As She Goes is sitting at #47 this week on the ARIA singles chart. Broken Boy Soldiers is fast-paced, clocking in at just over half an hour.

 

GOODBYE ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Artist: Jewel Position: No.17

Born Jewel Kilcher in rural Alaska , Jewel moved to Southern California in the early 1990s in search of stardom. She lived in her van until she made the big time. Her debut album Pieces Of You was an international hit, peaking at #5 (Jun. '97) here is Australia . Spirit reached #5 (Jan' 99), This Way got to #6 (Nov. '01) and 0304 peaked at #10 (Jun. '03). Jewel has also published a book of poetry called A Night Without Armor which was a top seller.

 

LIVING A DREAM

Artist: Katherine Jenkins Position: No.19

This beautiful mezzo soprano with the beautiful voice was once a school teacher. Katherine Jenkins signed the largest record deal in UK classical recording history and is proving her worth. The 25 year old is from Wales and is the unofficial mascot for the Wales Rugby Union team, having recorded the team's official song. Jenkins has performed the Welsh national anthem before many rugby games and had a slot at the Live 8 concerts last year. Her previous albums Premiere and La Diva have failed to make an impact on the ARIA albums chart although they have both charted on the ARIA Classical charts.
