Never a huge fan of his, did like "Eyes without a face", but that was it. I remember him having a bad motorcycle crash.

Was the character of Spike in Buffy the Vampire slayer not based on his look. :D

King Rocker!

Love the old Billster. Eyes Without A Face was awesome. White Wedding, Rebel Yell, Dancing With Myself. Good old cheesy punk pop! Ace!

...and it will be xmas soon too. wonder if there will be a second volume of xmas crooning from him

A friend of mine's sister lost her virginity to Billy Idol in a nightclub toilet ;)

Musically, nah.... he looked great, though.

Hmmm... Love Missile F1-11 might be a decent choice for the Soundclash.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik

Sigue Sigue Sputnik is a British pop-cyberpunk band that achieved moderate fame in the mid- to late 1980s, when the song "Love Missile F1-11" hit the pop charts around the world. "Love Missile F1-11"'s success was due in part to the song's use in the cult-hit movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Led by former Generation X bassist Tony James, the band adopted a style of new wave music similar to that of such bands as New York electronica duo Suicide and Swiss techno-rock duo Yello, by layering vocals, yelps, guitar riffs, electronic sound effects and short samples over pulsating synthesizer bass lines.

The themes and imagery in the band's songs were often influenced by futuristic, dystopian or post-apocalyptic films such as A Clockwork Orange, The Terminator, Blade Runner and the Mad Max trilogy. The band's music and image also mashed together a range of other pop culture influences, including the electronica/Krautrock influences of Kraftwerk, Marc Bolan's T-Rex, and the swagger and sex appeal of Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley and glam rock.

in the twang's review in the independent some was comparing the twang's hype to that f sigue sigue spunik and mentioned that they had adverts on their debut album. so was this like those download sites where you get free stuff if you listen to the sponsers message first and so the album was cheaper, or was it really just forerunner to all these multimillion gazillion dollar pop deals that we see now post spice girls???

Although Love Missile being a hit had f*** all to do with Ferris Bueller, more like the hype generated by the inkies and the rest of the media in the 80s.

But didn't Yello have a hit because of their exposure in it?

BTW where was this Gen X/Sputnik/Sisters thread?

My recollection of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's initial success was that it had nothing to do with 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and everything to do with the hype surrounding the band.

Yello, however, did score a minor chart hit in America (No. 51) with 'Oh yeah' as a result of the film.

If Donna Summer's 'I feel love' wins the current soundclash against Prince perhaps we should put it up against Love missile F1-11, then we'd have a Moroder versus Moroder clash!

I saw Sputnik live in Cardiff once - they were dreadful.... I still have the cardboard box version of their debut album. It's probably worth about ooo... 20p now :P

Sparks - hmmmm..... EXCELLENT band.... as much as I love the early stuff, my favourite Sparks album is Tryouts for the Human Race, the Giorgio Moroder one (that name again!).

billy idol was a poser, another elvis impersonator...

however he did some credible pop... my fav being the haunting, wistful 'sweet 16'.

Early stuff's alright, even though it gets a bit MIKA at times :puke2: however actually dont mind 'Get In The Swing' which probs would rate as the most annoying to most people (barmy record).

prefer the more electronic stuff, dont know any of the albums from this period however my compilation has got Number One Song In Heaven and Beat the Clock on and so i'd probs like Tryouts for the Human Race album. got the last two albums as well, lil beethoven is a must to own. bizzarre electronica/dance/orchestral/experimental album, better than the newer gut one

I loved White Wedding and the video too!

One of his biggest celebrity idols (pun pun), is HP Baxxter of Scooter fame. In fact in 1995 Scooter recorded a cover of Rebel Yell (which was a hit both in the UK and mainland Europe).

Billy Idol actually said at the time that it was a better version than his own.

I have both versions.

He is one of the rare singers I prefer solo. Mostly I don't like solo acts that left a band.
