August 2, 200717 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com August 02, 2007, Fred Bronson SEAN BY ME: "Stand by Me" is one of the classic songs of the 20th century. It has charted on The Billboard Hot 100 by eight different artists, and that's not counting the sampling of this evergreen in Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" (Beluga Heights/Epic), the single that takes a 23-1 warp speed jump this week. That 22-point move writes new chapters in chart history, first by creating the longest span of No. 1 hits for songwriters in the rock era. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's first No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart was Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," which claimed pole position the week of Aug. 18, 1956. That gives Leiber and Stoller a span of No. 1 hits that is now stretched to one week shy of 51 years. Until this week, the longest rock-era span of No. 1 hits for a songwriter on the Billboard pop singles chart was 38 years, nine months and one week, a record held by the late Lincoln Chase, best known for writing Shirley Ellis' 1964 hit, "The Name Game." Chase's credit appears on Bert Kaempfert's "Wonderland by Night," No. 1 in January 1961, and Mariah Carey and Jay-Z's "Heartbreaker," No. 1 in October 1999. The advancement of "Beautiful Girls" also gives Leiber and Stoller the longest gap between No. 1 hits in the rock era. They were last on top of the Hot 100 just over 48 years ago. Wilbert Harrison covered Leiber and Stoller's 1952 song "Kansas City" and his version of the song had a two-week reign in May 1959. "Beautiful Girls" is the fifth No. 1 on the pop singles chart for Leiber and Stoller. Their other chart-toppers are: "Hound Dog," Elvis Presley, 11 weeks (1956) "Jailhouse Rock" / "Treat Me Nice," Elvis Presley, seven weeks (1957) "Don't," Elvis Presley, five weeks (1958) "Kansas City," Wilbert Harrison, two weeks (1959) "Beautiful Girls" is the initial No. 1 on the pop singles chart for (songwriter) Ben E. King, who first charted on the Hot 100 as a member of the Drifters in 1959. I don't know any other songwriter who first went to No. 1 48 years after making his chart debut. There is some irony in that "Stand by Me" was never a No. 1 hit on its own. It took someone sampling the song to send it up to the penthouse. The timeless tune has been a top 10 hit twice for King, first when originally released and then again when the movie "Stand by Me" was a box office hit. Here is a list of the artists who have charted on the Hot 100 with "Stand by Me" over the years: Ben E. King, No. 4 (1961) Earl Grant, No. 75 (1965) Spyder Turner, No. 12 (1967) David & Jimmy Ruffin, No. 61 (1970) John Lennon, No. 20 (1975) Mickey Gilley, No. 22 (1980) Maurice White, No. 50 (1985) Ben E. King, No. 9 (1986) 4 the Cause, No. 82 (1998) "Beautiful Girls" is the first chart entry for Miami-born Sean Kingston. The 17-year-old is not the youngest male solo artist to top the Hot 100 in the last couple of years; Chris Brown was 16 when he went to No. 1 with "Run It!" in November 2005. But Kingston is the first artist born in the '90s to have a No. 1 song on this chart. The teen's date of birth is Feb. 3, 1990. A final note about "Beautiful Girls" and Leiber and Stoller: as reported in Chart Beat a few weeks ago, the legendary writing team had its first No. 1 on a Billboard chart in the spring of 1953 when Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton ruled the R&B singles chart for six weeks with the original recording of "Hound Dog." That means Kingston's chart success has expanded Leiber and Stoller's career chart span of No. 1 hits to 54 years. LIKE WE DID THIS SUMMER: Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are not the only rock era icons who first charted in the '50s to make a noteworthy return to the Billboard charts this week. Chubby Checker, whose first Hot 100 chart entry was "The Class" in May 1959, makes his first appearance on the Adult Contemporary chart with "Knock Down the Walls" (TEEC). While Checker is best known for his '60s singles on the Parkway label, including the massive hit recording of "The Twist," it hasn't been that long since he appeared on a Billboard chart. In 2003, remixes of his 1962 single "Limbo Rock" appeared on Hot Singles Sales, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales and Hot Dance Singles Sales. Checker's career chart span is now stretched to 48 years, two months and three weeks. FATHER AND DAUGHTER REUNION: There are only two families on Earth that can claim to have father and daughter represented simultaneously in the top 20 portion of The Billboard 200 with separate chart entries. Those families are the Sinatras and the Cyruses. A No. 20 debut for Billy Ray Cyrus' "Home at Last" (Walt Disney) puts the patriarch of the Cyrus family in the same top 20 occupied by daughter Miley, who slips 2-4 with "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus" (Walt Disney/Hollywood). The Sinatras first achieved a similar chart feat the week of March 26, 1966, when Nancy Sinatra's "Boots" jogged 60-14 in its third chart week, while Frank Sinatra's "September of My Years" dipped 6-9 in its 32nd chart week. "Home at Last" is Cyrus' eighth chart entry and his highest-ranking album on The Billboard 200 since "It Won't Be the Last" reached No. 3 in July 1993. On Top Country Albums, "Home at Last" opens at No. 3, and is Cyrus' best performance since "It Won't Be the Last" spent five weeks at No. 1 in the summer of 1993. "Home at Last" is Cyrus' 12th chart entry on the country tally. His most successful album is his first chart entry, "Some Gave All," which spent 34 weeks at No. 1, starting in June 1992. Cyrus also has a hit single that is showing up on Hot Country Songs as well as the Hot 100. On the former, "Ready, Set, Don't Go" is a new entry at No. 47. That's the highest-debuting title of Cyrus' 26 entries on this survey. Previously, his highest new entry was "Somebody New," which opened at No. 51 the week of Oct. 23, 1993. This new single is Cyrus' highest-ranking song since "Southern Rain" stopped at No. 45 in July 2001 and his first chart entry since "Face of God" nosed up to No. 54 in February 2004. On the Hot 100, "Ready, Set, Don't Go" bowed last week at No. 85 and this week falls to No. 96. It is the seventh chart entry for Cyrus and his first since "You Won't Be Lonely Now" settled for No. 80 in November 2000. 'HOME' RUN: Daughtry, the band fronted by "American Idol" fifth season finalist Chris Daughtry, has had two entries on the Adult Top 40 chart. Which one is the bigger hit? As of this week, it's a tie. "It's Not Over" entered the week of Dec. 16, 2006, and reached the summit the week of March 3. The song spent nine weeks on top. The follow-up, "Home," debuted the week of April 21 and climbed into first place the week of June 16. This week, "Home" is in its ninth frame at No. 1. Tune in next week to see if "Home" lords it over "Over," or if the two chart-toppers will have to settle for the tie. FEATURED ON FIVE: Mariah Carey made her debut on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs 17 years, two months and one week ago with "Vision of Love." This week, she collects her 40th chart entry, thanks to the debut of "Lil Love" (Full Impact) at No. 67. The song is credited to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony featuring Mariah Carey & Bow Wow and is the fifth of Carey's 40 charted titles to feature her in a featured role. Carey has previously charted as a support act to Busta Rhymes, Damizza, Jadakiss and Twista. "Lil Love" marks the first appearance by Carey on the R&B/Hip-Hop list in 2007. She was last on the chart the week of Dec. 30, 2006, the final frame for her song "Fly Like a Bird." SPRINGFIELD INTO ACTION: The fourth "Simpsons" album in 17 years arrives on The Billboard 200. It's the first album related to Springfield's most famous family to chart this century. "The Simpsons Movie" (Extreme) soundtrack is a new entry at No. 108. The first three "Simpsons" CDs were tied in to the Fox-TV series. "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" debuted the week of Dec. 22, 1990, ultimately peaking at No. 3. Next came "Songs in the Key of Springfield," which went to No. 103 in 1997. Two years later, "Go Simpsonic With the Simpsons" stalled at No. 197. Not included on the movie soundtrack is Green Day's interpretation of "The Simpsons Theme" (Reprise), which enters Hot Digital Songs at No. 54. FEEL THE 'EARTH' MOVE: "Planet Earth" (NPG/Columbia) is the 36th Prince record to chart on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the fourth to go all the way. Prince's first chart-topping title was the "Purple Rain" soundtrack, No. 1 for 19 weeks in 1984. In 1991, "Diamonds and Pearls" spent one week in first place. Next, "3121" also had a one-week reign, in 2006. SHE'LL TAKE US THERE: For the first time in almost 30 years, R&B legend Mavis Staples charts with a solo set. The Chicago-born member of the Staples Singers first appeared on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in September 1970 with the solo LP "Only for the Lonely," which peaked at No. 45. Seven years later, her album "A Piece of the Action" climbed to No. 51. This week, Staples' third solo album to chart, "We'll Never Turn Back" (Anti-), is new at No. 99. Nine albums by the Staples Singers have appeared on the R&B chart. The highest-ranked was the soundtrack to "Let's Do It Again," No. 1 in 1975. The Staples Singers last charted in 1984 with "Turning Point," which worked its way up to No. 43.
