August 5, 200717 yr Chartifacts (Thanks to Gavin Ryan) Fergie stays atop the Australian singles chart for a fourth week with her "Big Girls Don't Cry" track, and the track this past week has been certified Gold Sales Status, meaning sales of 35,000 or more have been done so far. There are eight new entries to the chart this week, something which hasn't happened since the 29th of January, when eight songs also debuted that week. The highest of these new entries comes in at No.5, and is the ninth Top 50 single for Canadian Avril Lavigne. "When You're Gone" is the follow-up to the equal-second-longest running No.1 this year. "Girlfriend" (6 weeks from 16th April), and the second single lifted from her third album "The Best Damn Thing" (No.20 this week). Of those nine chart entries, this becomes her sixth Top 10. At No.15 is Australian five piece Operator Please, and their debut single "Just a Song About Ping Pong". It's taken from their forthcoming album "All About Now", and they are currently touring the country as support to The Kaiser Chiefs. Talking of touring support acts, Gym Class Heroes are supporting Gwen Stefani on her current Australian tour, and they score their second chart single this week at No.16, "Clothes Off", taken from the No.40 album this "As Cruel As School Children". Their first track "Cupid's Chokehold / Breakfast in America" reached No.14 back in May, and as that song featured a sample, this new track does too in the form of Jermaine Stewart's "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off", which made No.39 in Australia back in September 1986. Christina Aguilera had to cancel her last two Australian shows last week, and her illness also caused the Auckland, New Zealand shows to suffer the same fate. With her album "Back to Basics" jumping from No.9 to No.6 this week, it produces a fourth single from it in the form of the No.21 debut for "Slow Down Baby". This follow's the recent No.2 single "Candyman" (No.10 this week), and the previous two other singles from the album "Ain't No Other Man" (No.6, August 2006) and "Hurt" (No.9, November 2006). Bob Sinclar's last single spent 40 weeks within the Top 50, only dropping out in late June 2007, that one was "Rock the Party (Everybody Dance Now)" which reached No.6 over the summer period. His fourth Top 50 charting single this week debuts at No.28, "Sound of Freedom", and like it predecessor, it too features a 90's club-track-classic sample with Rozalla's "Everybody's Free (to Feel Good)" (No.11, February 1992) being used in the background. The album of the same name is due out soon. Two Aussie acts score their 8th singles this week, and first one up is Guy Sebastian with "Cover On My Heart", coming in at No.32. This is the third single from his "Closer to the Sun" album, following on from "Taller, Stronger, Better" (No.3, September 2006) and "Elevator Love" (No.11, December 2006). Guy is touring the country from October 6th, whilst Darren Hayes is doing a national tour starting in Perth from October 13th, and he too scores his 8th Top 50 chart single. "On the Verge of Something Wonderful" debuts at No.35, and his first chart placing since November 2005 when "So Beautiful" reached No.7. It's the first single from his forthcoming third album "This Delicate Thing We've Made" which is released worldwide on August 20th. Another support-act tourist around the country is New York's Yeah Yeah Yeah's, who's tour EP "Is Is" debuts at No.38. As she is atop the singles chart, Fergie is also atop the albums chart for a second week with her debut album "The Dutchess", now breaking a chart anomaly that has stood since mid-February 2005. No female solo acts have spent more than a single week at the top (this does not include albums that have gone back to the top like "I'm Not Dead") of the charts since Gwen Stefani's "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" spent two weeks atop from the 14th of February 2005. And now that Fergie has done it, here's hoping she can continue at the top and break some more long-standing records. The highest new album this week comes in at No.11, and it has no title, in fact it is simply entitled "Untitled", and is the 7th studio album for Korn. The hard-rock group were last on the charts with an album back in December 2005, when "See You On the Other Side" reached No.19. Sum 41 debut at No.22 this week with their third Australian charting album, "Underclass Hero". Their last appearance on the charts was back in October 2004, when the album "Chuck" debuted and peaked at No.13. Garbage have produced four albums from 1995 to 2005, and this week their Greatest Hits package "Absolute Garbage" enters the charts at No.23. The group have had 15 Top 100 singles in Australia, whilst their latest single will be the extra track "Tell Me Where it Hurts".
