AN EPIDEMIC of teenage abortions is sweeping the country, a News of the World investigation reveals.

Despite a government scheme to cut pregnancies by dishing out morning-after pills to youngsters, a record 18,619 girls under 18 had terminations last year.

 

That means the hidden toll of misery has SOARED by more than 2,500 in ten years.

Our figures obtained from the Department of Health show the number of under-18s given a SECOND abortion rose to 1,341. Shamefully, one 18-year-old even underwent her SIXTH.

 

Our probe reveals for the first time how the number of teenagers seeking terminations has rocketed across England and Wales.

It pinpoints London as the nation's abortion capital. And it shows how, in one borough, an astonishing ONE IN 22 girls under 18 had the op to get rid of babies last year.

 

This grim tally was recorded in Lambeth, south London, where the abortion rate was FIVE TIMES higher than other parts of the country. But nearby Southwark ran it a close second with one in 25 young girls having abortions.

 

London's overall rate was 24 girls per 1,000 — which equates to a horrifying one in every 41 teenagers. In fact, almost all the top ten under-18 abortion blackspots were in the London area, including Barking & Dagenham, Lewisham, Hackney and Croydon.

The only exception was the Midlands city of Coventry, which joined the list of shame with one in 33 girls having an abortion. Rural Herefordshire clocked up just one in 100.

 

Shockingly, our inquiry also revealed 135 girls younger than FOURTEEN terminated pregnancies across the country.

The number of pregnant girls turning to doctors for help is rising even though many schools have enlisted nurses to hand out morning-after birth pills. In the past four years Lutterworth grammar school in Leicestershire gave its pupils more than 300 of the tablets.

 

But the epidemic is not confined to the young. In all 193,737 women had abortions last year—more than the soccer stadiums of Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle put together would hold. And for 44 of these it was at least their EIGHTH op.

 

Economics Professor David Paton, of Nottingham Business School, said rising abortion rates indicated "the government's strategy of increasing access to services such as emergency contraception is failing."

 

 

 

Abortion should be banned except in the case of rape or where the child is likely to be so physically and/or mentally handicapped that their quality of life when born will be zero

 

I am not particularly religious but I believe abortion to be an evil, tantamount to child murder, it is also a copout for the feckless and the reckless

 

Everyone should be made to go full term and if the mother does not want the child then they should be put up for adoption but abortion should be made illegal except in the circumstances of proven rape or severe disability

In this day and age there is really no reason for so many unwanted pregnancies!

 

But it is far too 'easy' to get an abortion - it is now seen as an 'easy' option, as a method of birth control.

 

Very little real consideration is given to the psychological / physical consequences for many women of abortions.

 

It is the increase in young girls that is most alarming.

 

But removing abortions would not work - it would just drive them underground as they were in the 60s.

 

No one has the right to tell a woman what she can and can't do with her own body - no one has the right to force a woman to have a child she truely doesn't want.

 

....but whilst no method of contracteption is fail proof - the level of these statistics show a whole scale ignorance and lack of knowledge.

Hmmm, I think that this thread can almost certainly be linked to the thread that Brian put up about young teenage girls openly flaunting themselves on the Internet.... Just why is it that all these abortions are happening...? Seems obvious to me that it's a total breakdown in education and just general moral standards... When I was a teenager in the 80s, the Safe Sex message was hammered into us, it does not appear to be the case now... These days it seems like Abortion (which was always seen as the VERY last resort..) is now being used as a form of Contraception in itself... NOT what 'Roe Vs Wade' intended I am damn sure of that..... I do believe that a woman has the right to choose, but things are clearly going too far now, and the right to have an abortion is clearly being misused and abused by the feckless....

I know by experience that, in houses where parents advice their children to make "safe sex" the rate of undesired pregnancy is much bigger then in houses where parents don´t advice their children to have sex at all. It is just stupid to ask for someone who is too young and doesn´t even have a solid relationship to have "responsible" sex. It gives teenagers the impression that their parents aprove them having sex with anyone just for fun.

 

By the way, I doubt that in a country like England, ANY teenager doesn´t know that sex causes pregnancy, and that condoms can avoid this... They know it, and they don´t need their parents or schools telling them so. The reason why they don´t use is simply because they are irresponsible, and that comes from their education.

I was quite concerned by some of the comments by my son's friends during a discussion about flavoured condoms (and relieved that my son knew his friend was seriously wrong ;) )

When I was a teenager you couldn't move for being given free condoms and adverts "Don't die of ignorance" - whilst this was all aimed at aids it had a knock on effect of reducing unwanted pregnancies.

Well, a newborn baby also needs its mother to survive... he can´t live on his own. Does a 3 month old baby has self-awarenes, does he even know his name? So let the egoist parents kill him because they need to save money to change their car or buy a new apartment... What about people with serious mental or physical deficiency? People who are too old? If one aproves aborption then we must also discard any type of human life that can´t sustain itself. Are we going back to Ancient Greece where any human being that wasn´t useful for society could just be sacrificed?

 

One human´s life is constantly developing... you can´t say that this living being only starts to be human after a few months of pregnancy, or after the birth. A 5 years old kid isn´t as capable as a 30 year old adult, and so it goes. Physically one human being keeps on developing until age 20-something. Being a foetus is a part of a process, just like puberty, voice change, etc. There can´t be a cutline between who can be killed, and who can´t, based on age or physical development.

Just because you find that simple fact uncomfortable to your religious sensitivities doesn't make it any less of one JJN... And I'm sorry, but it basically is a Parasite - a Foetus simply cannot exist (a newborn infant can at least BREATHE on its own...) without the mother's body to give it sustenance, it is an organism feeding off a host organism - the very definition of the word "parasite".... So, seeing as how, technically, the foetus is still part of the woman's body and cannot exist in its own right, then I am basically of the opinion that the woman is entitled to do with the foetus what she wishes.... It's NOT a child, it is NOT a human life, it's merely an organism living off a host until the day it's born.... Therefore removing it is NOT murder....

I dont think that abortion should be used as just another form of contraception, it's really meant to be a very last resort, BUT, I would never dictate to anyone that they had to carry a baby to full term if that was not the wish of the woman concerned, you cant do that mate, we'll be back to the bad old days of Backstreet Abortionists if we go down this path, and I seriously doubt you want to see that... It's an education thing, simple as, Sex Education is absolutely fukkin' dire in this country; when I look at Holland and the Scandinavian countries, who both have very advanced sex education programmes in comparison to our backwater, third rate education system, it makes me frankly ashamed to be British... And it can be no coincidence that in those countries, this is hardly even an issue, Holland and Scandinavia has the LOWEST teen pregnancy rates in the developed world, we should be looking to those countries a lot more instead of being up America's arse...

Its nothing to do with religion, I do not think of religion in the slightest when I have such a view I am just 100% pro life and can not think of any justification in aborting a baby

 

If it has a heart and brain and can breathe inside the womb then as far as I am concerned it is a human life, an unborn baby's heart doesn't suddenly start beating in the delivery room it is already a developing baby inside the womb breathing and moving about so there is no justification in killing it and denying it life just because it interferes with a career or was the result of a drunken one night stand, religion doesn't come into it when it comes to me, I just believe in the right to life and like I said there are hundreds and thousands of families who can not have children that would love to adopt one and so on so yes IU am very anti abortion
