Just more proof to me that the US needs to put its own house in order before it starts to dictate how other nations should or shouldn't act..... <_<

spot on... it's strange, America - in many ways it's the leader of the world - but America, to me, exists just in its main cities - the rest of it is pretty backward and conservative.

America, on the whole, is deeply old-fashioned - the TV, its politics, laws, music charts, even down to things like home furnishings... it's years behind Europe.

According to Human Rights Campaign, perhaps the leading GLBT rights organization in the US, the following states have laws protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity:

California

Colorado

Connecticut

District of Columbia

Hawaii

Illinois

Iowa

Maine

Maryland

Massachusetts

Minnesota

Nevada

New Hampshire

New Jersey

New Mexico

New York

Oregon

Rhode Island

Vermont

Washington

Wisconsin

So they claim 21 states. Anyway I live in Illinois and I work for a company with a strict anti-discrimination policy. I would never put myself at risk for such treatment.

I got fired from my job at K-Mart last year RIGHT AFTER I came out of the closet. They said my work ethic was slacking, even though I had just gotten a raise a month ago for being one of their best employee's in the electronics department :manson:

Dude, that's disgusting. KMart is owned by Sears Corp., known to be one of the most gay-friendly retailers in America. In fact, the company has an anti-discrimination hiring policy. Look at this:

You should take the issue up with management. If someone fired you because you're gay, they violated company policy and they themselves should be fired. Seriously.

America probably would be a great place if the majority of its elected officials actually stood by the principles of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights...

Indeed. They OBVIOUSLY don't get the part where the Bill Of Rights state the bit on EQUALITY, and FREEDOM OF RELIGION. Because most of the time when someone doesn't agree with gay marriage it's because of their religious stand point.

Dumb asses.

But they never said it was because of my sexual orientation, so they probably would just write off that my work ethic was slacking...though that obviosuly isn't the case, for the reason I stated, but still, I highly doubt they will just be like ok you're right!

Well I understand but remember, you can't be fired for no reason. If you haven't already, demand specific evidence of lack of work ethic. Ask for instances and specifics. And it wouldn't hurt to at least send the manager a letter about how you're informed of Sears Corp's anti-discriminatory policy and you and your attorney are investigating the matter further. Copy the letter to Sears Corporate. I'm not asking you to sue but at least let them know that you're willing to challenge them.

That's disgusting, they really need to take a leaf out of the UKs book on discrimination and the workplace.

Well, I will indeed send a letter to the manager and the corporation. But, I don't think I will go up there and complain about it to the guy that fired me :P

Yep. We pretty much suck. x.x Well, there are some good parts to America, but seriously. The homophobia here is insane. -_-

Today some freshmen found out that I was gay, (I'm a senior) and they acted as if I had AIDS. I was like chill the fuck out, you're not going to catch it.

The funny thing is that a decent portion of them were probably in the closet

Quite often the closeted gays are second-in-line after religious fanatics when it comes to gay bashing. I think it makes them feel more straight when they beat gays and therefore can live again longer in the closet.

Thank goodness no one at my school knows besides my close friends. I go to a private school, so if people found out...gah. Can't imagine what would happen.

Yeah, there are some jocks at my school who I have a pretty good feeling are in the closet. Heh. -_- It's sad.

I am my highschools token gay guy, most of the straight guys are just jealous of me because I hang out and shop with the girls they wish they could have...
I don't know the number of states now but several years ago (around millennium) there were just ten states in the USA that had a law making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in employment, housing, credit and public accommodations. Those states were:

Hawaii

California

Maine

Connecticut

New Jersey

Minnesota

Massachusetts

Rhode Island

Vermont

Wisconsin

So maybe seven states have passed these kinda laws since I saw the list leaving 33 still without.

I was gonna say... I don't think I've heard any of this go on in my state. The manager at Taco Bell next to where I work is gay and there's a lesbian who works at A&W with me. I really didn't know this even went on. People getting fired for their sexual orientation.
