May 1, 200619 yr Posted by Wills Doc on Devoted.. Young has won! It's official - Will Young is the UK's all time pop idol! The nation's greatest music stars have been fighting it out for weeks to be crowned as the UK's favourite artist of all time - and now you have a winner! Click here to see the full top 40 rundown, as broadcast across Commercial Radio on May 1st. Will Young has proved he's established himself as a formidable talent in the minds of the British public, and has emerged victorious in the UK Music Week Chart. The former Pop Idol winner has quickly shed the stigma of his TV talent show birth, silencing critics with his continued credibility. Now he's topped the polls in another popularity contest, and confirmed yet again that he'll be around for a long time to come. The Chart proves that the great UK pop record is still a hit with the public, with the nation's top popsters Robbie Williams and Sugababes both hitting the top ten. But it also reflects the recent rock resurgence in the UK music scene, with Kaiser Cheifs and Arctic Monkeys obviously having a profound effect on the record buying public. Despite only a few months in the limelight the Arctic Monkeys stormed in at number 12, while fellow Yorkshire statesmen Kaiser Chiefs are in hot pursuit at 16. It was also a great day for bands who dominated the mid 90s - from pop to rock. The phenomenal success of the Spice Girls, Take That and Oasis was reflected in their chart positions of 4, 7 and 9 respectively. Though Oasis' Britpop rivals Blur fared less well, failing to make it into the top 40. However, frontman Damon Albarn's innovative project Gorillaz has seen him find real success, and the band came in at number 8. The votes, which have been coming in since April 3rd, have played an important part in UK Music Week, which has been celebrating the best in homegrown talent. Will Young UK's most popular artist (Monday May 01, 2006 03:38 PM) Singer Will Young has beaten a host of British acts to be voted the most popular UK artist of all time in a poll of radio listeners. The 27-year-old, who was catapulted to fame in 2002 after winning the inaugural Pop Idol contest, fought off competition from the likes of Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney to top the Music Week May Day chart. The annual chart celebrates the best of UK music counting down the 40 most popular artists of all time, as voted for by listeners of commercial radio. Young, whose first single Evergreen shot straight to number one, becoming the fastest-selling debut in UK chart history, was closely followed by Robbie Williams. Former Beatle Sir Paul claimed third position followed by the Spice Girls at number four and Coldplay at five. Young said he was "honoured" to have topped the poll adding: "What makes it so special is that it's voted for by the public. "I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who took part and made the effort to vote. I'm over the moon." fantastic isn't it?
