August 14 - This Day sees the 40th anniversary of the Marine Offences Act which came into force at midnight. It was initiated by the late Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

This made the Pirate Radio stations around Britain illegal and an offence to broadcast and also an offence to supply the radio stations. All except one station (Radio Caroline which became Radio Caroline International) closed down but at one minute past midnight on 15 August they carried on broadcasting. The first record being played was "We Shall Overcome" by Joan Baez.

You can get all the information on this site about the story of pirate radio in Britain.
