August 23, 200717 yr Chartifacts from aria.com.au Singles They say you can’t keep a good girl down! That rings true in Fergie’s case, her single Big Girls Don’t Cry, clocks up its sixth consecutive week. Left in her wake are positions #2 to #4 and #9 remaining stationed for another week, but we see P!nk jump two positions to #5 with Dear Mr. President. Close behind is Alex Gaundino’s Destination Calabria, down a spot to #6. Next up is Avril Lavigne who climbs a spot to #7 with When You’re Gone and at #8 is Rihanna’s Umbrella. Lastly, Akon re-enters the Top 10 at #10 with Don’t Matter. SAID ONE TO THE OTHER - Lisa Mitchell No.27 Hailing from the southern New South Wales town of Albury, Lisa Mitchell auditioned for the 2006 series of Australian Idol and was placed sixth. The enchanting 17 year old stole the hearts of her Australian audience during her time on Idol with her sultry voice. Before Mitchell’s time on Idol, she began guitar lessons at the age of 12 and fronted a cover band named Chrome. Mitchell draws inspiration from Claire Bowditch and Missy Higgins. This is Mitchell’s debut to the ARIA Singles Chart. EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! - The Hot Lies No.35 Hard rockers, The Hot Lies hail from Adelaide and consist of Pete Wood, Benjamin Pix, Jared Brown, Leaton Rose and Luke Szabo. The Hot Lies make a triumphant return after their debut to the ARIA Singles Chart after their Heart Attacks And Callous Acts EP lit up the chart and peaked at #36 in September ’05. The Hot Lies have toured with the big guns of rock including Good Charlotte, After The Fall, Sum 41 and Yellowcard. Emergency! Emergency! is the first track to be lifted from the bands forthcoming album Ringing In The Sane. I DON'T REMEMBER - Powderfinger No.43 Arguably one of Australia’s biggest rock bands – Powderfinger, release the second offering taken from their former #1, double platinum selling album, Dreams Days At The Hotel Existence. I Don’t Remember follows Lost And Running, which peaked at #5 in May earlier this year. Previous hits for Powderfinger include – My Happiness (#4 Aug. ’00), On My Mind (#9 June ’03) and Sunsets (#11 Jan. ’04). Powderfinger are about to embark on a nationwide tour with Silverchair, dubbing it “Across The Great Divide Tour” to help promote reconciliation with Indigenous Australians. Fun fact: Powderfinger are the proud recipients of a total of fourteen ARIA Awards! Albums It’s a royal ol’ week on our chart this week! In addition to Fergie the Dutchess (OK, she can’t spell) at No.1 for the fourth straight week, The King (Elvis Presley) storms from No.22 to No.4 to give him his first top 10 album for almost four years, his last being 2nd To None which also hit No.4 in October 2003. The album has performed even better in the UK where it is this week’s new No.1 entry. While the big Elvis revival is due in large part to the 30th anniversary of his death, two other performers in this week’s top 10 celebrated more pleasant milestones this week – on the 15th, Bernard Fanning of Powderfinger turned 38 while on the 18th Mika Penniman (aka Mika) turned 24. Three other titles climb into this week’s top 10. New at No.6 is Skin, the first solo album by Katie Noonan who had previously reached the top 10 twice with her band George (see below for details). The other two are albums that return to the top 10 after long absences – Back for its ninth week in the top 10 at No.9 is Grand National by the John Butler Trio which entered the chart at No.1 back in April and was last in the top 10 in May while at No.10 is Good Charlotte’s album Good Morning Revival which hasn’t been this high since its first two weeks on the chart back in March. Here are this week’s new charting albums - SKIN - Katie Noonan No.6 Thirty year old Katie has had a diverse and successful career. Over the past five years she has found her way onto the charts as an integral part of three different recording acts. Her first major chart success was with her brother Tyrone and their band George who had two top 5 albums – the double platinum, ARIA Award winning (Breakthrough Artist – Album) Polyserena (No.1 March 2002) followed by Unity (No.5 March 2004). This was swiftly followed by a classical album which was recorded with her Mum. The Katie & Maggie Noonan album Two Of A Kind reached No.61 on the albums chart (and No.2 on the Classical list) in May 2004. Her most recent chart appearance came two years ago in May 2005 when a side project called Elixir reached No.24 with the first of their two albums. On this, her first solo release she is produced by Andrew Klippel who is no stranger to success himself, having fronted the early 1990s Dance act Euphoria which had two chart topping Singles in 1992. BRAND NEW DAY - Ricki-Lee No.37 With her latest Single Can’t Touch It holding confidently to the No.2 position for a second consecutive week, the Gold Coast based former Australian Idol contestant lands her second ARIA top 40 album. Her first, Ricki-Lee reached No.30 in October 2005. Between her two solo albums, she spent a year as a member of the Young Divas quartet, a stint which produced the No.4 hit album Young Divas (November 2006). FANTASTIC PLAYROOM - New Young Pony Club No.79 Short listed (with 11 others) for this year’s Mercury Prize (which is announced on the 4th of September), this is the debut album for the London based pop / dance quintet of Tahita Bulmer, Sarah Jones, Andy Spence, Lou Hayter and Igor Volk. Although this is the first Australian chart entry of any kind for the band which formed in 2004, two singles from the album have charted in the UK top 50 this year - The Bomb (No.47 in March) and Ice Cream (No.40 in July). The album reached No.54 in the UK a few weeks ago. EARLY ELVIS - Elvis Presley No.81 This double CD set takes the listener way back to where it all began, not only for Elvis but for Rock & Roll itself. Twenty of the 25 songs on this release were Elvis hits (either here or overseas) and then there are his versions of hits from the time by the likes of Bill Haley, Little Richard and Carl Perkins. All of the songs date from the period from 1956 through 1958 and include Presley’s earliest chart entries Tutti Frutti, Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, I Was The One and I Want You, I Need You, I Love You. CEXCELLS - Blaqk Audio No.86 Produced by Dave Bascombe (who has also been responsible for work by Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, Erasure and Echo & The Bunnymen), this album is a side project for two members of the Emo band AFI. Founding AFI member Davey Havok and Jade Puget (who joined the band in 1998) conceived the notion of an electronic alternative to their work in AFI around five or six years ago, but it was not until last year that this album started to take shape. In their other life as AFI members, Davey and Jade have charted twice on the Australian albums charts, first with Sing The Sorrow (No.65 in April 2003) and most recently with Decemberunderground (No.3 in June 2006). ELVIS AT THE MOVIES - Elvis Presley No.98 Starting with Love Me Tender in 1956 and ending with Change Of Heart in 1969 Elvis made 31 films, all of which were used as vehicles for his music. This 40 track double CD package features at least one Elvis song from each of those movies including many of his biggest hits including Return To Sender, Jailhouse Rock, Can’t Help Falling In Love, G.I. Blues, Love Me Tender and Viva Las Vegas. With two debuts and a chart re-entry joining his two debuts from last week, Elvis once again has five albums in the top 100. The last time that he achieved the feat was for three weeks in August and September 1997 immediately following the twentieth anniversary of his death.
