well? what are they? tell us what you like and why...

for this thread a one hit wonder will include acts that have had 1 major hit, and an unknown minor hit or two.

keith................... '98.6' (#24, 1967), great little upbeat track, very 'northern soul'

norma tenega...... 'walking my cat named dog' (#22, 1966), dustys 'friend', a nice summery song

neil christian......... 'thats life' (#14, 1966) upbeat mid 60's class track

sir douglass quintet.. 'shes about a mover' (#15 1965) a 'mod' classic, odd name, odd track but superb!

timebox............. 'beggin' (#38, 1968) a cover of the 4 seasons track, excellant cover though

overlanders....... 'michelle' (#1 1966) love this beatles cover, an all time fave

I love this song........forget Pink Floyd Another Brick In The Wall this has the best use of kids in a song ever

Keith West - Grocer Jack (Excerpt from a Teenage Opera) (UK#2 1967)

...and it was stuck at #2 behind Engelbert Humpindinck's awful Last Waltz = nearly as big a musical travesty as The Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane being stopped by "Release Me".

Does anyone realise that there were only 7 TRUE one hit wonders in the 60s.

A true ohw is an act that had only one #1 hit and nothing else that charted ever.

The true ohw of the 60s were:

1960 - Tell Laura I Love Her - Ricky Valance

1962 - Nut Rocker - B. Bumble & The Stingers

1966 - Michelle - Overlanders

1968 - Fire - Crazy World Of Arthur Brown

1969 - In The Year 2525 - Zager & Evans

1969 - Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus - Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg

1969 - Sugar Sugar - Archies

Other one hit wonders are acts that had only one chart hit and nothing else charting however minor.

That's the official line from Guinness and the OCC

Strictly speaking yes, but in the REAL WORLD one hit wonders are people who had one big hit (whether it was #1 or not), and never really equalled that success. God I despise people who know it all <_<

I would now comment on this thread's topic, but my mum was barely born in the 60s

Keith West wasn't a ohw. His other hit was Sam #38. This was also from the Teenage Opera that never materialised. The music did but the opera didn't.

The original poster has defined the terms of this thread - not Guiness or the OCC! So we're being unofficial - but that's the kind of rebels we are! :naughty: :arrr: :teresa:

Here are some more artists with one major hit to their name - all classics.

Tommy James and the Shondells - Mony mony (#1 in 1968) - 1 minor hit in 1966, but much more successful in the USA.

The Merseys - Sorrow (#4 in 1966) - two ex-members of the Merseybeats cover a McCoys B-side, and Bowie does it again later.

Love Sculpture - Sabre dance (#5 in 68) - manic cover of a classical piece courtesy of Dave Edmunds.

Gotta have these:

When a Man Loves a Woman - Percy Sledge

Eloise - Paul Ryan

Wipe Out - The Surfaris

ELOISE was barry ryan :) and he did have a string of minor hits that were actually quite good.

MOVE ON UP was from 1971 so will qualify when we do the ohw of the 70's :)

m8... im fully aware of what a true ohw is :)

however over the years the charts have changed, in the early 60's only the top 20 was published, this went up over the years to top 40, so it could be argued that if an act had a minor hit outside the contemporary chart at the time, it could be construed as a ohw. for the purposes of this thread a minor follow up hit or two can be overlooked .

the idea was to remember acts with 1 big hit, as oposed to a thread over a major group with a string of hits.

ELOISE was barry ryan :) and he did have a string of minor hits that were actually quite good.

Oh bugger - I knew i was tired when I posted but ... bugger

IIRC, Curtis Mayfield hat a top 10 hit in the 70's with 'Freddie's Dead'.....
IIRC, Curtis Mayfield hat a top 10 hit in the 70's with 'Freddie's Dead'.....

In America he did, but inevitably on a UK forum we're talking about the UK charts where, sadly, Curtis Mayfield didn't get all the hits he deserved (and neither did the Impressions, his previous group, in the 60s - they scored no UK hits).

Gotta have these:

When a Man Loves a Woman - Percy Sledge - other hit Warm & Tender Love #34

Sweet Soul Music - Arthur Conley - other hit Funky Street #46

Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield - Does Not Qualify as it was 1971

Eloise - Paul Ryan - other hits Love Is Love #25 - The Hunt #34 - Magical Spiel #49 - Kitsch #37 - Can't Let You Go #32

Wipe Out - The Surfaris OHW

Let's Twist Again - Chubby Checker had numerous other hits including 2 other Top 20s - The Twist #14 - Dancin' Party #19

My Boy Lollipop - Millie - other hits Sweet William #30 - Bloodshot Eyes #48

Games People Play - Joe South OHW

The Good The Bad and the Ugly - Hugo Montenegro - other hit Hang 'Em High #50

Green Tambourine - The Lemon Pipers - other hit Rice Is Nice #41

(I'm the) Urban Spaceman - Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band - OHW

They're Coming to Take Me Away Haha - Napoleon XIV - OHW

My faves:

My Friend Jack - The Smoke #45 in 1967

Please Stay - Cryin' Shames #26 in 1966

Everything I Am - Plastic Penny #6 in 1968

(I would have said) Yesterday Has Gone by Cupid's Inspiration #4 in 1968 but it doesn't qualify as they has a futher hit - My World - #33

This was an awkward one as this was their only 60's hit. They did however have a minor hit in 1970 with Accidents #46

im impressed.... you know 'my friend jack' and 'please stay'.. i do pop quizes and when they come up (once in a blue moon) very very few people know them (and i know some real knowlegeable people),

and as far as this threads concerned 'yesterday has gone' will be included as 'my world' is all but unknown and a minor hit. great track, love the lyrics :)

I think this counts.

Roger Miller - King of the Road #1 1965

He also had 4 other hits

Engine no.9 - #33

Kansas City Star - #48

England Swings - #13

Little Green Apples - #19

but I don't think they're very well known at all.

Another may be

Easybeats - Friday on My Mind #6 1966

Also had Hello, How Are You #20

Johnny Tilloson hit #1 in 1960 with Poetry in Motion and the highest his 6 other singles reached was #21.
