Kristal began as a jazz singer, but became the manager of New York jazz venue Vanguard in the late '60s, before opening CBGBs in 1973. The club put on early gigs by The Ramones, Talking Heads and The Strokes. It remained a leading small venue until rent rises forced it to close in 2006.
