'BLINK' GETS THE NOD: There's no way you can miss the impact of Kenny Chesney's "Don't Blink" (BNA) on country chart history. The Knoxville native's new single enters Hot Country Songs at No. 16, equaling the highest debut of all time since the chart expanded to 50 positions the week of Jan. 11, 1964.

The single that held the record for the highest new entry of all time is "My Heart Skips a Beat" by Buck Owens. That Capitol single debuted at No. 16 the week of March 28, 1964, and went on to spend seven weeks at No. 1. It turned out to be Owens' second biggest hit of his 89 chart entries, tied with the 1966 chart-topper, "Waitin' in Your Welfare Line."

Owens' biggest hit was "Love's Gonna Live Here," No. 1 for 16 weeks in 1963.

The next few weeks will tell if "Don't Blink" will be one of Chesney's biggest hits. Right now it's a tie between "The Good Stuff" in 2002 and "There Goes My Life" in 2003. Both had seven-week reigns.

Since "Don't Blink" is tied for being the highest debuting country single, it's obviously Chesney's highest new entry. The previous record holder was "Who'd You Be Today," which opened at No. 26 the week of Oct. 1, 2005.

"Don't Blink" is only the second song to debut inside the top 20 of the country chart in 2007. The other was Carrie Underwood's "So Small" (Arista), which bowed at No. 20 the week of Aug. 18.

Only two other songs have made entrances in the top 20 this century. Garth Brooks' "Good Ride Cowboy" debuted at No. 18 the week of Oct. 22, 2005 and Keith Urban's "Once in a Lifetime" opened at No. 17 the week of Sept. 2, 2006.

'GIRLS' JUST WANNA BE ONE: Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" (Beluga Heights/Epic) tumbles 1-5 on the Hot 100, the steepest fall from pole position since D4L's "Laffy Taffy" plunged 1-6 the week of Jan. 21, 2006. But as one song about "Girls" leaves the penthouse, another checks in.

The new occupant is Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" (will.i.am/A&M), giving the female member of the Black Eyed Peas her third No. 1 single from her solo album debut, "The Dutchess." That makes Fergie the first solo female artist to pull three No. 1 hits from one album since Christina Aguilera did it in 1999-2000 with "Genie in a Bottle," "What a Girl Wants" and "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)."

"Big Girls Don't Cry" is the 13th song to advance to No. 1 in 2007. Fergie is the third artist to collect two chart-toppers this calendar year, as her single 'Glamorous" reigned for two weeks in March. The first two artists to collect two No. 1s in 2007 were Nelly Furtado ("Say It Right" and "Give It to Me") and Justin Timberlake ("What Goes Around...Comes Around" and "Give It to Me").

"Big Girls Don't Cry" also forms the 13th set of No. 1 hits that share titles but are different songs. In November 1962, the Four Seasons scored their second chart-topper with the Bob Crewe/Bob Gaudio-penned "Big Girls Don't Cry." The 44 years, nine months and three weeks between the ascension of the Four Seasons song and Fergie's hit is the longest gap between like-titled No. 1 songs.

Here is a list of the 13 sets of same-titled No. 1 songs in the rock era, including one triple set of different songs ("My Love"):

"All 4 Love," Color Me Badd (1992)

"All for Love," Bryan Adams/Sting/Rod Stewart (1994)

"Best of My Love," Eagles (1975)

"Best of My Love," Emotions (1977)

"Big Girls Don't Cry," Four Seasons (1962)

"Big Girls Don't Cry," Fergie (2007)

"Family Affair," Sly & the Family Stone (1971)

"Family Affair," Mary J. Blige (2001)

"Good Vibrations," the Beach Boys (1966)

"Good Vibrations," Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch f/Loleatta Holloway (1991)

"Honey," Bobby Goldsboro (1968)

"Honey," Mariah Carey (1997)

"I'm Sorry," Brenda Lee (1960)

"I'm Sorry," John Denver (1975)

"Jump," Van Halen (1984)

"Jump," Kris Kross (1992)

"My Love," Petula Clark (1966)

"My Love," Paul McCartney & Wings (1973)

"My Love," Justin Timberlake f/T.I. (2006)

"One More Try," George Michael (1988)

"One More Try," Timmy T (1991)

"The Power of Love," Huey Lewis & the News (1985)

"The Power of Love," Celine Dion (1994)

"Venus," Frankie Avalon (1959)

"Venus," Shocking Blue (1970) / Bananarama (1986)

"Wild, Wild West," Escape Club (1988)

"Wild Wild West," Will Smith faturing Dru Hill & Kool Moe Dee (1999)

STILL MORE 'GIRLS': While Fergie is enjoying her third No. 1 on the Hot 100, she also scores her first chart-topper on the Adult Top 40 tally. "Big Girls Don't Cry" is the first No. 1 on this survey for a female artist in exactly one year. There hasn't been a woman in charge of this chart since the week of Sept. 2, 2006, when KT Tunstall was in her 10th and final week at No. 1 with "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." Since then, the Adult Top 40 chart has been ruled by Gnarls Barkley, Nickelback, the Fray, Snow Patrol, Daughtry and Plain White T's.

"Big Girls Don't Cry" is Fergie's second solo chart entry on the Adult Top 40 list. "Glamorous" peaked at No. 24 in June.

SEEING 'FIRE AND RAIN' AGAIN: James Taylor made his Adult Contemporary chart debut 37 years ago this month with "Fire and Rain," which peaked at No. 7. The song had already charted AC four months earlier, when R.B. Greaves' cover had a two-week run in May.

Now, "Fire and Rain" is back for a third run, courtesy of Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds. The writer/producer/label founder debuts at No. 26 with his remake of Taylor's first hit.

It's been 10 years since Babyface had an AC hit. "Every Time I Close My Eyes" debuted in February 1997 and peaked at No. 17 in May. Between April 1990 and August 1997 he had five chart entries and his longest gap between hits was the four years between "Whip Appeal" in 1990 and "And Our Feelings" in 1994.
