ill start in 1970, as imho it was a class year for ohw's.

 

obvious ones

 

norman greenbaum - spirit in the sky ...... several covers failed to beat this classic god-love-rock.

matthews southern comfort - woodstock..... classic #1 one hit wonder and hippy anthem, good track

lee marvin - wanderin' star ..................... pretty awful track really, off the film 'paint your wagon'

shocking blue - venus........................... the original and by far the best version of this excellant track.

freda payne - band of gold................... ok there were 2 other minor hits, but this was the biggy.

 

not so obvious ones

 

steam - na na hey hey kiss him goodbye ... another one wrecked by bananarama <_< great track

pipkins - gimmie dat ding ........................ tony burrows in one of his many silly incarnations.

edison lighthouse - love grows (where my rosemary goes).......... t b again <_< didnt like it.

christie - yellow river ........... ok they had a minor hit too, very poppy used in a tv ad for yellow pages

don fardon - indian reservation.... a good track imho, but he was from luton or somewhere...lol

poppy family - which way you going billy?....... abit soppy, but it was a nice track.

 

MUSHIES FAVS..... a few one hit wonders that are my favourites

 

mr bloe - groovin with mr bloe...... love this track, even now, peaked at #2 behind norman g

rare bird - sympathy..................... love this track too! what a great bluesy voice, shoulda been big.

ides of march - vehicle.................. love the great piece of jazz rock, why it stalled at #31 god knows!

Theres loads but cant think of any more right now..

No never been a big Rod Stewart fan myself, I used to like Maggie May when I first heard it but bored of it now! He covered some classic songs though like first cut is the deepest (PP Arnold) and This Ole Heart Of Mine (Isely Bros) but the originals were way better!

agreed..... he murdered chris farlows (mike d'abos) 'handbags and gladrags'.

The Rezillos - Top Of The Pops (other minor hits - but this was their only biggie)

The Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes (one other minor hit)

Mink De Ville - Spanish Stroll (classic)

The Saints - This Perfect Day (Australian punk classic - made other great records but none charted)

The Patti Smith Group - Because The Night (written for her by Bruce Springsteen)

Plastic Bertrand - Ca Plane Pour Moi (Belgian punk - one other minor hit)

Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't fear) the reaper (first released in 76 but not a hit until 79)

A Taste Of Honey - Boogie oogie oogie (disco classic)

Cerrone - Supernature (another disco classic - two other minor hits)

Jilted John - Jilted John (punk novelty)
