The Beatles’ second movie Help! is to be released on DVD for the first time, as the wait continues for the Fab Four’s download debut.

The 1965 movie, which was previously available on VHS, will be issued by Apple Corps via EMI on DVD on October 29 in a two-disc set. The first disc features the original film digitally restored with a new 5.1 soundtrack, while the second disc has an hour of extra features, including a 30-minute documentary about the making of the film with director Richard Lester.

The extras also include a missing scene, featuring future EastEnders star Wendy Richard, an in-depth look at how the movie was restored for DVD release, reminisces of Help! by the cast and crew, and theatrical trailers.

The movie, which originally came out a year after the band’s cinematic debut A Hard Day’s Night, includes seven Beatles tracks, among them the title track, Ticket To Ride, You’re Going To Lose That Girl and You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away.

The Beatles films A Hard Day’s Night, Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine are already available on DVD, although their controversial parting shot Let It Be has yet to be issued in the format.

The film was never released on VHS and has not been screened on TV since 1981, reflecting concerns among the band themselves about the movie as it captures tensions and differences among the four members who were on the verge of splitting up at the time it was being made.

Jonathan Cohen, Seattle

The Beatles' second film, 1965's "Help!," will be released in a double-DVD edition Oct. 30 via Apple Corps Ltd and EMI Music. The movie was released in DVD in 1997 and again in 2000, but has been off the market ever since due to rights issues.

In "Help!," drummer Ringo Starr comes into possession of a cursed ring, which he cannot remove, prompting adventures in London, the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas.

The first disc of "Help!" boasts a digitally restored version of the film plus a new 5.1 audio soundtrack, with songs like "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," "Ticket To Ride," "The Night Before," "Another Girl" and "You're Going To Lose That Girl."

Disc two offers a 30-minute documentary about the making of the movie, a missing scene, a featurette on the restoration process, interviews with cast and crew, three theatrical trailers and vintage radio advertisements.

"Help!" will also be available in a boxed set with a reproduction of director Richard Lester's original script and a 60-page book with rare photos and production notes.

Yellow Submarine isn't available at the moment AFAIK. Or has it been recently rereleased on DVD again.
