Singles

Not only does Fergie take the crown for being this weeks No.1 single, but she also takes the crown for having the longest run at No.1 this year with, Big Girls Don’t Cry. Kanye West is hot on the pursuit for chart glory – Stronger moves up a whopping six spots to land in at No.2, pushing Good Charlotte’s Dance Floor Anthem down to No.3. Remaining stationed at No.5 for another week is Can’t Touch It by Ricki-Lee and is closely followed by Avril Lavigne who falls from No.4 to No.6 with When You’re Gone. New at #8 is Paul “The Chief” Harragon’s That’s Gold, his cheeky version of Spandau Ballet’s, Gold. Up a spot to No.9 is Fall Out Boy’s Thnks Fr Th Mmrs and rounding it all out for the week is P!nk with Dear Mr President which falls three spots to No.10.

THAT'S GOLD - Paul "The Chief" Harragon

No.8

Before hitting the screens of long running NRL Footy Show, Paul ‘The Chief’ Harragon was a star player of the rugby league. Making his debut to the Newcastle Knights in 1989, Harragon was one of the fiercest players in the code. A decade later Harragon announced his unfortunate retirement from the sport due to ongoing knee problems. That’s Gold is The Chiefs rendition of Gold by Spandau Ballet and marks Harragon’s debut in the ARIA Singles Chart. The “That’s Gold” segment on the Footy Show has been watched by thousands and is some what turned into a phenomenon – now “That’s Gold”!

BETTER THAN - The John Butler Trio

No.16

ARIA award winning blues and roots band – The John Butler Trio grace the ARIA Singles Chart this week with Better Than. The current line up comprises of John Butler, Shannon Birchall and Michael Barker. The trio made their ARIA Chart debut in 2001 with a self titled EP which peaked at #73 that year. Zebra was the next single release and it peaked at No.22 in February 2004 and was followed up with What You Want (No.29 Aug. ’04). Better Than is the second single taken from the band’s double platinum, former No.1 album, Grand National. John Butler is part owner with The Waifs of Jarrah Records which both groups release their material through.

CITY OF DREAMS - Joel Turner No.60

World champion beat-boxer extraordinaire, Joel Turner returns to the ARIA Singles chart with City Of Dreams. Turner grabbed the attention of his fans when he auditioned for the 2003 season of Australian Idol. Although Turner did not make the cut, he was crowned “Most Popular of the Unforgettables” and performed at the grand finale held at the Opera House. Turner did impress Idol judge, Mark Holden with his beat-boxing skills and guitar playing, that Holden signed him to his Dream Dealers record label. Turner has released five Top 40 hits in his career, These Kids (No.1 Nov. ‘04), Funk U Up (No.13 May ‘05), Knock U Out (No.14 Feb. ‘05), Respect (No.29 Nov. ‘05) and All Night Long (No.38 Mar. ’07). Will City Of Dreams make hit #6 for Turner? Stayed tuned next week…

PARTY LIKE A ROCKSTAR - Shop Boyz

No.94

Hailing from Atlanta, this rap trio consists of Demetrius "Meanie" Hardin, Richard "Fat" Stevens and Rasheed "Sheed" Hightower. Earlier this year the Shop Boyz peaked at No.2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. But this overnight success story, was years in the making. Cousins Hardin and Stevens grew up with best friend, Hightower and worked odd jobs to make ends meet. Their hard work paid off when a local producer offered to make beats for them free of charge. One thing lead to another and before they knew it the Shop Boyz were hearing their tracks on the radio and in clubs. The rest is history! Party Like A Rockstar is the debut to the ARIA Singles Chart for the Shop Boyz.

Albums

Zooming up to the top of the album charts this week is Paul Potts with One Chance, up from No.6. Bumped down a spot to No.2 is Damien Leith with, Where We Land. The Traveling Wilburys have done some travelling themselves, moving from No.8 to No.3 with their Traveling Wilburys Collection. Michael Buble’s Call Me Irresponsible moves up from No.5 to No.4. Meanwhile, Fergie is slowly relinquishing her reign, as The Dutchess slides down to No.5. The King (Elvis) has also taken a dive to No.6. Brand new entrants, Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals have arrived straight to No.7 with their album, Lifeline. The last two in the Top 10 are Aussie favourites, The John Butler Trio with Grand National at No.9 and still holding strong at No.10 is Powderfinger with Dream Days at The Hotel Existence.

LIFELINE - Ben Harper And The Innocent Criminals No.7

The last few years have been very busy as well as successful for Ben Harper. After a history of live performances and collaborations, he stepped into the studio with The Blind Boys Of Alabama to record There Will Be A Light (No.6 Sep. ‘04). As a solo artist, Ben Harper has also had a number of recent hits including his album, Both Sides Of The Gun (No.1 Mar. ‘06). Lifeline, which was recorded in Paris after 9 months of touring and an 8 week tour in Europe. The entire album was recorded and mixed in 7 days, using a 16 track analogue tape machine – completely without the use of computers or pro-tools.

PRINCE UMBERTO AND THE SISTER OF ILL - Bumblebeez No.61

The Bumblebeez consists of Chris Colonna and friends, including sister Pia, aka Queen Vila and guitarist and bassist, Surya. Their music is all recorded onto Colonna’s laptop. This is where he creates the music of The Bumblebeez. Colonna has used his sister rapping, Surya playing extra instruments and even his Mum screaming to create their diverse sound of a mix of hip hop and rock. They were the Triple J Unearthed Winner from ACT in 2002, as well as the winner of the ABC Digital Fly TV’s music search. Their debut album White Printz (Feb. ‘03) and follow up, Red Prinze (Dec. ‘03) both failed to make an impact on the ARIA Albums Chart. Prince Umberto And The Sister Of Ill marks the debut to the ARIA Albums Chart for The Bumblebeez.

RIOT! - Paramore No.69

Hailing from Franklin, Tennessee. The original core band consisted of Hayley Williams (lead vocals) and brothers Josh (lead guitar) and Zac Farro (drummer) with the bass and guitar player having a few changes over the years. The name Paramore was taken from a friend of the band, whose maiden name was Paramour, which they found out means, secret lover. Changing the lettering slightly, they decided on Paramore. The first track from Riot!, Misery Business (No.65 Aug. ‘07) is according to Hayley "more honest than anything I've ever written.” The readers of the UK’s Kerrang! Magazine voted the group, Best New Band, and Hayley was voted #2 Sexiest Female in 2006.

WHAT'S HAPPENING - Katalyst No.72

This is the third album release from Katalyst. Their debut album, Manipulating Agent (No.98 July ‘02) was nominated for an ARIA award for Best Dance Release and Katalyst also won two awards at The Australian Dance Music Awards – Best Producer and Best Album in 2002. Their second album Agent Manipulated, contained the tracks from the first album re-mixed by some of Australia’s and the UK’s top producers. The title and theme of this new album asks the listener to question What’s Happening, be it personally, socially, politically, environmentally or economically. Katalyst has teamed up with a few special guests, both Australian and international artists for this album, including Katie Noonan, Stephanie McKay and Steve Spacek.

STRUCK DOWN - Mia Dyson No.74

This is Dyson’s third album, the first being Cold Water – nominated in 2003 for an ARIA Award and the second, Parking Lots – which won the 2005 ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album. Dyson grew up in a country Victorian town just outside the spring water town of Daylesford. By her own admission, her childhood was isolated and she grew up listening to her parent’s record collection, which consisted of Ry Cooder, Bonnie Rait, and Bob Dylan. The summer of 2007 saw her play to her biggest audiences to date, when she was asked to support Eric Clapton in his tour across Australia. She was also invited to join Deborah Conway’s singer-songwriter roadshow, Broad. Dyson has commented about Struck Down, "There's definitely a theme of journeys, driving, being alone”. Struck Down is Dyson’s debut to the ARIA Albums Chart.

THE LEGENG OF JOHNNY CASH VOL. II - Johnny Cash No.86

This entry is no stranger at all to the charts. The Legend Of Johnny Cash Volume II chronologically spans nearly half a century of Cash’s hits. The album is a follow up to Ring Of Fire: The Legend Of Johnny Cash Vol I (No.10 Feb. ’06). It includes some classic hits such as Ballad of a Teenage Queen, There You Go, Don’t Take Your Guns To Town and Daddy Sang Bass.

THE GUITAR MAN - Hank Marvin

No.92

Marvin’s career kicked off after meeting Cliff Richard in a tailor shop in Soho. This chance meeting led to Marvin being Richard’s lead guitarist in the band The Shadows for Cliff’s imminent tour of England. Together they both had a number of hits including Sacha, The Joy of Living and Throw Down a Line. Now, nearly 50 years later Marvin has entered the ARIA Albums chart for the first time with his latest release, The Guitar Man. The album features renditions of hits both past and present including Fields of Gold, You’ve Got A Friend, Don’t Know Why, Nine Million Bicycles in Berlin and You’re Beautiful. Marvin now resides in Perth, WA.
