You can call them the Portuguese Spice Girls. Musician/producer Tozé Brito decided to create a girl group that had the essence of 60's girl groups revamped with 80's fashion and attitude. He picked the two female memebrs of his band Gemini (that sung the 1978 Portuguese ESC entry), curly-haired Fá Padinha and red-haired Teresa Miguel, plus brunette Lena Coelho trained as a Fado singer and blonde Laura Diogo, a Miss Portugal runner-up. They soon became a mass phenomenon with their pop anthems and their risqué looks, rendering a still very gray nation more cheerful.

The quartet was named "Doce" ("sweet") and took part on the 1980 Festival RTP da Canção with a track called..."Doce". They lost but the girls caught the eye of the public. They were back in 1981 with "Ali Babá" and came up second. The song was a huge hit in Portugal.

They got third time lucky in 1982 with "Bem Bom", which finally earned them a ticket to the ESC. The song mixes a disco beat with Portuguese folk rhythms and it's about a night of passion that goes on through 1 a.m., 2 a.m., 3 a.m. and so on... In Harrogate, they were the first to perform in the ESC 1982, dressed as musketeers. Despite Germany being the runaway favourite that year, Portugal was hugely tipped as favourite that year, together with the UK, Belgium or Israel. But in the end, the song came up a rather disappointing 13th place with 32 points. It remains however one of the most loved Portuguese songs by ESC fans.

Doce kept on scoring hits and mantained their popularity until their disbandment in 1987. Their music had a huge revival with the turn of the new millenium, as it was increasingly played on radio and in discos. A remix "Bem Bom" became a hit once again in 2003, included in a new Greatest Hits album. In 2006, Lena, Teresa and Fá did one last TV performance together.

Nowadays, Fá and Teresa are now dedicated housewives. Teresa is responsible for the Doce catalogue and is still invited for interviews.
Laura became a band manager but now lives in the USA where she's taking a Major in Psychology. Legend has it that she lipsynched all the songs, but she always denied it. Lena turned to actinh whilst still performing fado. In 2006, she created a project of Doce Mania where four girls aged 11 to 13 sing the Doce hits, presenting them to a new generation.

Lyrics of the English version:

Bim Bom

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

One o'clock - I see you and my heart is beating
Then at two o'clock I feel this could be magic
Three o'clock - we dance, romance and then you kiss me
Four o'clock - I only know I don't wanna let you go
One more dance, a kiss, yes, it is magic

One around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Two around the clock - bim bom
Three around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Four around the clock - bim bom
Five around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Six around the clock - bim bom
Seven around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Eight around the clock - bim bom
Two for tea and tea for two
And my dreams have all come true
Bim bom

Five around the clock - my heart is beating faster
Looking at the moon and six o'clock went by
Seven in the morning - you're my slave and master
Eight o'clock - I only know I will never let you go
Take a chance, a kiss and fly away

One around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Two around the clock - bim bom
Three around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Four around the clock - bim bom
Five around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Six around the clock - bim bom
Seven around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Eight around the clock - bim bom
Two for tea and tea for two
And my dreams have all come true

One around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Two around the clock - bim bom
Three around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Four around the clock - bim bom
Five around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Six around the clock - bim bom
Seven around the clock, hey! - bim bom
Eight around the clock - bim bom
Two for tea and tea for two
And my dreams have all come true
Bim bom, hey!

Hmmm it's catchy enough...better than alot of Portugese entries. I quite like the English version...it sounds alot more 80s than the performance. I don't think too much of the 2003 remix though! That must have been a bit of a disappointment!

I don't know about Portuguese Spice Girls, but it's a solid 6 out of 10.

Great idea N-S by the way!

Typical Eurovision song. It's fairly catchy though, thought it would've done slightly better tbh. I'll give it 6/10 too. ^_^
