Neil Tennant, one half of British pop act 'Pet Shop Boys' has taken a dig at modern pop industry and reckons the likes of Arctic Monkeys and other guitar acts are the real stars of pop music.

Speaking to contact music, he said:

"We are going through a phase where the term 'pop' is used to mean rubbish. "But bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers and Franz Ferdinand make pop music.

â€They like to think they are rock but they are pop and all have a sense of fun about what they do and have a great look.â€

"It annoys me that pop gets clogged up with Pop Idol and reality TV rubbish.

"Shayne Ward has a waxwork in Madame Tussauds - can you believe it?"

How TRUE?

Mr Tennant is 100% right......

Even though I dont really like em, Arctic Monkeys are Pop music, all these manufactured, talent show puppets are Pop muzak.....

There's plenty of alternatives out there for bands - the best one being for bands to just flog themselves on the internet and just cut out the middleman altogether - worked for Arctic Monkeys and Gnarls Barkely....

good point, & i hope so too, personally i have no time for major labels, espcially the way they dont give artists time to develop

however the Arctic Monkeys have done wonders for EMI Music Publishing's share last quarter

Indie is an ethos which grew out of Punk, an approach to making music which does not involve the big corporations. The issue has become fudged because in the 90s you had lots of bands on Indie labels who signed over to major labels, but they were still mistakingly referred to as "Indie" bands. Once a band crosses over as it were, they cannot be referred to as an "Indie" band anymore. If you look at the Indie charts back in the 80s and 90s you'd have a real mish-mash of bands who really sounded nothing like each other all being included, but they were there because they were on Independent record labels...

i wish i had the article from one of the broadsheets (yes know they are all mostly quality compacts these days  you know what i mean  ) that was saying the lasting lagacy of punk is in fact the have a go mentality of the pop idol generation.
