I don't think this list is based purely on Guitarists skill and it is biased/ overates more well known players.

For instance below is a video of Sum 41's/ Brown Brigades guitarsit Dave Baksh who is 51st, surely Kurt Cobain couldn't play anywhere near as good as this yet he gets to number 14 on the list...

Kerry King from slayer is to low aswell, especially when you see the '3 power chord talent' that is Tom Delonge at number 43.

You're absolutely right mate! This list is no reflection of the guitarists' playing ability!

The 2003 Rolling Stone top 20 guitarists looked like this...

- that's "of all time", btw. Was the original posted list on this basis, or was it "of the year", "of the decade" or summat?

Obviously some great guitarists are on there altho personally I would have thought Ritchie Blackmore and Sambora were worthy of higher positions. As previous posters said, sheer technique on its own doesn't equate to being the best as Music is an art form and emotion and dedication plays a big part. I would argue that Van Halen is technically better than say Dave Gilmour however I prefer Gilmour's playing (obviously they are both f'kin amazing musicians).

Also we should remember that these guitarists are mostly playing stuff that they wrote themselves and therefore an element of 'I'll compose only what I can actually play' comes into it.

I'm surprised Steve Rothery of Marillion wasn't in there as I think he is an exceptional guitarist and this may raise a few eyebrows but I once saw Chris Rea play live and he truly blew me away with his masterful use of the guitar, especially the slide guitar. I would rate both these two above maybe 70% of that list!

I'm not really sure what you're getting at with that statement tbh... I cant think of a single guitar player who didn't first cut their teeth attempting to play material written by other guitarists... Richie Blackmore, Tommy Iommi and Jimmy Page were playing old blues standards, both Zep and Sab were covering the likes of Willie Dixon and other blues musicians and using them as a launch-pad to craft their own great music.... One cannot deny the passion and commitment of these genuinely great guitarists... And dont underestimate the technical skills of Dave Gilmore either, he is a monumentally gifted guitarist, his guitar work on songs like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" hit heights of ability and passion that the vast majority of the "LA Hair Metal" crowd could only dream of, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai included....

Totally agree!

David Gilmour is the best guitar player IMO; he's not only a very talented vocalist (Pink Floyd/solo career) but also a fantastic guitarist

PS I like especially the guitar solo from "Comfortably Numb"

This seems to be based more on legends instead of the talent of guitar playing.

Though i am glad to see Slash at number 4, he deserves that!

A Top 100 without ROBIN GUTHRIE is not complete...

Robin Guthrie is the guitar player of Cocteau Twins (they were extremely influential).

Well on my list would be:Randy Bachman,Paul McCartney,Lennie Bruce. But at the top only because the average person never really thought about him, has to be George Harrison who made some of the most memerable solo's and chord changes of all time.

Angus Young at 20 yet no mention of Malcolm Young he is the mainstay of AC/DC Angus is just the publicity, the album cover, and record companys gimmick to help sell records and tickets a good guitarist granted but Malcolm beats him hands down

and Rory Gallagher at 42 is a joke

Kurt Cobain was amazing... :(

For some weird reason, I never think of him as a guitarist. Tbh, I actually forgot he played guitar until I saw the list. And something I've only just noticed, how did Brian May get so high?! :o He's composed some great riffs, but...

Kurt Cobain was'nt that amazing at guitar, it is his songwriting that is special.
1st - JOHNNY MARR

im sorry but that is complete bollocks, as much as i love Johnny Marr and The Smiths, and how good he is at guitar, he is nothing on guitarists such as Tom Morello orKirk Hammet. Marr could make a best guitarist list, but number one would be just plain silly.

1st - JOHNNY MARR

 Better than Jimi Hendrix, Page and Clapton?.. :P

That's a strange one... He should probably be atleast top 30.

Honestly that is just ridiculous, how can you have a list of the top ONE HUNDRED best guitarists ever and not include Jack White at all???? The dude is amazing, see his solos in Blue Veins, and also John Mayer should be on that list in the top 20-30 also atleast, everyone thinks hes just some pop sensation but hes a legend in the making at guitar if you know anything about him

He has good technical ability. When it actually comes to being creative, (which I think makes a GOOD guitarist), then he's pretty crap.
