The Police thrilled around 55,000 fans at Twickenham Stadium last night with their first UK concert in more than two decades.

The reformed trio of Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland, whose last UK tour closed with four dates at Wembley Arena at the end of 1983, played every one of their 14 UK Top 40 hits in a set lasting more than two hours.

Message In A Bottle and Walking In The Moon, the band’s first two UK number one hits, sandwiched Synchronicity II at the start of the show, while the concert also took in the likes of Don’t Stand So Close To Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Can’t Stand Losing You and Roxanne.

They also delved into their album back catalogue with non-single cuts such as Voices Inside My Head and When The World Is Running Down being performed. King Of Pain, a hit from the band’s final album Synchronicity, opened the encore, which also took in early hit So Lonely and, appropriately, their most famous and successful song, Every Breath You Take, while they closed with Next To You from the Outlandos d’Amour album.

The band play a second night this evening at Twickenham before the tour moves to continental Europe and then Ireland with dates taking in cities including Hamburg, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Barcelona and Paris.

The tour returns to the UK on October 16 at Manchester Evening News Arena and then on October 19 at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium with the final date at Wembley Arena the following night.
