May 4, 200619 yr Chartbeat May 04, 2006, Fred Bronson from Billboard.com SAVE OUR SINGLES: If Rihanna was disappointed that her first Billboard Hot 100 single, "Pon de Replay," had to settle for peaking in the runner-up slot, the Barbados-born singer can be happy at last. Her third chart single, "SOS" (SRP/Def Jam), takes the second-biggest leap to No. 1 in history, rocketing 34-1 thanks to a flurry of digital sales. The record for the biggest jump to No. 1 in Hot 100 history is held by Kelly Clarkson. In October 2002, her first single, "A Moment Like This," bounded 52-1. The record had been held for 37 years by the Beatles. In April 1964, "Can't Buy Me Love" soared 27-1. Rihanna is also in second place when it comes to the biggest leap within the top 40 of the Hot 100. The record was set last month when T.I. shot up 35 places, from 39-4 with "What You Know." Rihanna is tied with the 33-point advance made by Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" in November 1960. The seven biggest moves within the top 40 in Hot 100 history are: 39-4 "What You Know," T.I. (April 15, 2006; +35) 35-2 "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" Elvis Presley (Nov. 21, 1960; +33) 34-1 "SOS," Rihanna (May 13, 2006; +33) 35-3 "Black or White," Michael Jackson (Nov. 30, 1991; +32) 37-5 "Missing You," Case (April 14, 2001; +32) 36-5 "Penny Lane," The Beatles (March 11, 1967; +31) 36-5 "Because You Loved Me," Celine Dion (March 16, 1996; +31) With "SOS" in pole position, Rihanna's song goes into a six-way tie as the shortest No. 1 title in Hot 100 history. She is the first female singer to join the list of the shortest No. 1 titles. In chronological order, they are: "Why," Frankie Avalon (Dec. 28, 1959) "ABC," Jackson 5 (April 25, 1970) "War," Edwin Starr (Aug. 29, 1970) "Ben," Michael Jackson (Oct. 14, 1972) "Bad," Michael Jackson (Oct. 24, 1987) "SOS," Rihanna (May 13, 2006) "SOS" is the eighth single to advance to No. 1 in 2006, but the first by a solo female artist. The only other woman to reach the summit this year is Beyoncé, who featured Slim Thug on her chart-topper, "Check On It." "SOS" has now outperformed the song it samples, "Tainted Love." Originally recorded by Gloria Jones, the tune was a No. 8 hit for Soft Cell in 1982. Songwriter Ed Cobb, a charter member of the singing group the Four Preps, died in 1999; this is his first song to top the Hot 100. TURNING 'LEFT': Rihanna isn't the only artist to storm into the Billboardh Hot 100 top 10 from below the 30 mark this week. In any other week, the 33-6 move of Nick Lachey's "What's Left of Me" (Jive) would have been the biggest jump inside the top 40 portion of the tally. This is the first solo effort by the former member of 98 Degrees to chart on the Hot 100. In April 2000, "Where You Are" by Jessica Simpson featuring Nick Lachey stopped at No. 62. Last week I said Lachey was featured on the song with then-wife Simpson, but Chart Beat reader Larry Trumbull of Trumbull, Conn., reminded me that Nick and Jessica didn't tie the knot until October 2002. TWO FOR THE 'ROADRUNNING': Teaming up to record an album turned out to be a great idea for Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. He scores the highest-ranked position of his career away from Dire Straits, and she has the second-highest ranked album of her career. "All the Roadrunning" (Nonesuch/Warner Bros.) enters The Billboard 200 at No. 17. That beats Knopfler's previous highest ranking of No. 38 in October 2002 with "The Ragpicker's Dream." This is the 27th album to chart for Harris; only "Trio" (recorded with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton) went higher, peaking at No. 6 in 1987.
