Another one of these excellent little Brit-Films that gets unfairly ignored... "Sugarhouse", like the incredible "Bullet Boy" before it, presents a picture of London (South East London particularly) that you'll NEVER see portrayed in glossy trash like "Eastenders" or any of these lousy, chocolate box Working Title "rom-coms". This is harsh, edgy stuff, the sort of film that "Breaking and Entering" might have been, had it been directed by someone with a bit less of a cosy, middle-class outlook on the Capital. Oh, and no sodding Jude Law either, so that's a big plus as well....

The incredibly under-rated Stephen Mackintosh plays Horatio, a wheeler dealer who travels to Dagenham to buy an illegal gun off a bloke he met in Kings Cross called D (played by ex-So Solid Crew rapper Asher D, proving again that he's a far better actor than he ever was as a rapper...). But it turns out that D has nicked the gun off of a seriously psychotic drug dealer called Hoodwink (played by Andy "Gollum" Sirkis who is truly frightening and thoroughly convincing...). You can imagine that all is so NOT gonna turn out well.....

This is really tense, edgy stuff, directed with real flair, with some top notch acting from the three leads, a bit of comedy is provided by three rather useless wannabe "rude boys" called Sef, Gary and Ray, who all come across like Ali G's little cousins. It's clear that the director wants to juxtapose the ragged, more deprived side of London with the "all-new" shiny London. There's a great shot at the end of the film of the estate where the action is centred around and Canary Wharf in the background which encapsulates the intent of the director - a picture paints a thousand words as they say... All in all, this is well worth checking out if you get a chance.... 8/10.
