I feel that this may be a "guided missiles, misguided men" situation.

Looking on the policeforce as a whole, a body of authority, then yes.

maybe there would be an improvement in our increasingly violent society.

But the guns would be carried not by the policeforce, but by individuals,

and the order to shoot would come from an individual.

I think this is where the system might fail. Most of the officers are upright people

motivated by decency and an impartial sense of justice. But I feel that a minority

of the people attracted to the police force are attracted by the sense of power

their position gives them, and God help us if they had the use of guns!

It always feels funny walking through London and seeing armed police walking around. I'd hate that to be the norm here.

so would I.

I remember driving in Belfast behind an army jeep with soldiers armed with guns, it felt very intimidating indeed.

And when I was in Israel I didn't like seeing teenagers in the army wandering around the bus station in Jerusalem, guns slung casually over their shoulders.

It sounds like gunfire outside now...... thank goodness it's only fireworks!

Im sick of the fireworks although they are better than gunfire.

Patch is feared to death of them. (the dog)

BT, all I can say is chocolate liquors. Two vices in one. And Thank you. It may be a few days until I can get out and post them.

My daughter's dog is a nervous wreck at this time of the year. And the fireworks

seem to go on for weeks.

Luckily, although mine is terrified by thunder, it's only very close fireworks that bothers him. The dog before was a nervous wreck with them - and yes, they did seem to go on for ever.

I hope Baytree is o.k..........she has been very quiet lately

Great minds think alike. I couldn't resist slipping a little box of those into my shopping this week.

Well, I have to do something to combat those dirty, driech Glasgow winter days, don't I ? It was so dull and dark the other day, I'd my lights on in the morning.

My last 2 arrived yesterday, thank you.

Sorry I worried you all by disappearing.

It was all such a rush. My sister-in-law wasn't sure up until the very last minute whether she was able to go. She wanted to but she lacked the confidence.

No longer though. We're going back for the last week on Wednesday 7th November. I'll be back home late on the 12th.

My brother had a miracle escape in a car crash just before he was due to come down to join us. The car he was travelling in on the motorway was struck by a drunk driver and rolled four or five times. The car was a write off but he and the driver managed to crawl out through the back window. The police said they'd never known people to escape virtually uninjured from such a mangled vehicle. My brother only had a few cuts and bruises on his arm and his friend had the same plus some whiplash. My brother is even more determined that his St Christopher will never leave his neck. He said that when the car was rolling over in the pitch black, he really thought his end had come.

Omg, what an awful experience....thank goodness they were both not badly injured or worse. I'm

always nervous on the motorways. What happened to the drunk driver ? I hope your brother

has not lost his confidence.

A truck driver going in the opposite direction, who didn't see the accident, saw the guy's car crashing into a barrier further on and he stopped his truck to go and help him. When the driver got out, the truck driver realised he was very drunk and he had the good sense to take the keys before contacting the police.

The only reason I have a mobile phone is in case I breakdown or have an accident when I'm driving alone.

My view is that drunk drivers know they aren't capable of driving their vehicles and as soon as they start it, innocent people are at risk. I think anyone who's caught driving over the limit should automatically be banned from driving and have to re-sit their test.
