Country: Israel
Year: 2005
Title: Hasheket shenish'ar
Title in English: The silence that remains
Artist: Shiri Maymon
Music: Pini Aaronbayev
Lyrics: Pini Aaronbayev, Eyal Shahar & Ben Green
Points: 154
Placing: 4th (7th in the semifinal)

Shiri Maymon was born on May 17th, 1981 in Haifa. She's been singing since she was 10 and whilst struggling for a record deal she took up modelling, dancing, bartending and serviced in the Israeli Air Force. She also appeared in a 2001 video by the band Teapacks who represented Israel in this year's ESC.

Her first glimpse of Fame came in 2003 when she was second in the TV Show "Kochav Nolad", the Israeli equivalent of Pop Idol. She was offered a record deal and a role in a TV series called "Exit".

Then in 2005, she took part in the Israeli National final of 2005 with the song "Hasheket shenish'ar" that earned her an overwhelming victory (116 points out 120). Despite not being a huge favourite, Shiri dazzled everyone with her dashing good looks and vocal talent, giving her song (who was sung in both Hebreww and English) a spot in the final. Two days later, she did it again, this time even bettering her semifinal position from 7th to 4th. It was Israel's best result since the 1998 victory. Monaco gave it 12 points and the UK seven.

After her ESC performance, Shiri's career skyrocketed. Her album went gold, she had a string of hits and landed some acting roles. She's currently working in two albums: one in English and one in Hebrew.

I didn't like it so much at the time, because it's always been overshadowed by "Angel" by Chiara in my eyes, but it's a very nice song. It actually has quite an American feel to it too. Full deserving of her Top 5 placing.
This is an amazing song. Best song of the year by far looking back. 9/10 for me!
Oh my, this was amaze  That year's top 4 was PERFECT  And I disagree Dayveeeed, My Number One and Angel both put it to shame :heehee:
Cool Vibes should have finished in the top 5 at least, that trounced all over every other song im the 2005 contest

Agreed. A Greece, Malta, Romania, Israel, Switzerland Top 5 would have been perfect.

It's interesting that this thread has more post than the two previous ones. I'd like to encourage people to actually post when N-S puts up an older song as well. The Contest did exist before 2000 you know!!

I suppose its because Shiri was such a popular song whereas hardly anyone knows the earlier non-winning entries let alone has any other knowledge of the contest before this period...

I try and comment on most of them but I have more knowledge of the contests post 1995 so I am more likely to post in those threads

Fair enough I guess. I just thought these threads were a good way to introduce people to older songs who hadn't heard them, more so than people who have already heard them.

I myself didn't watch any Contests before 1997, but I just like building up the collection of songs I know I suppose.

I have all of the songs from every contest on a DVD I got a couple of years back so I'm familiar with them all :D
