Britney Spears charged with hit-and-run in L.A.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Britney Spears was charged on Friday with hit and run and driving without a valid license, a spokesman with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said.

 

The 25-year-old singer was charged with one count of hit and run causing property damage and one count of driving without a valid California driver's license, both misdemeanors.

 

The charges, which each carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, stem from an incident in a private parking lot in the San Fernando Valley on August 6.

 

Spears is accused of hitting a parked car and driving away.

 

The victim filed an accident report on August 9 at the North Hollywood Community Police Station.

 

The city attorney's office did not know whether Spears' car had been damaged, nor did he know the extent of damage to the other car, spokesman Frank Mateljan said. He also did not know who else, if anyone, was in the car with Spears.

 

Representatives for the singer were not immediately available for comment.

 

Spears was sent a letter on Friday, notifying her of the charges. A hearing, which Spears does not have to attend because the charges are misdemeanors, is set for October 10, Mateljan said.

 

Earlier this month, the singer, who shot to stardom in the late 1990s as a pop princess, delivered what was considered a disappointing performance of her new single "Gimme More" at the MTV Video Music Awards.

 

Spears' professional life has been overshadowed by her personal crises, which have become constant fodder for supermarket tabloids.

This happens that often in shopping car parks that it's really ridiculous that it's even been reported to the police.

There were paps around who recorded the whole thing and who contacted the owner to begin with.

 

I don't know of anyone who has gone to jail for a parking accident.

And as for the expired license, I'm sure with all the custody and career pressures she's had of late that a judge wouldn't

be understanding as to why she forgot to renew it.

 

No one was hurt and there wasn't that much damage done. It will probably only be a fine and the cost of the damage to the other car

that her insurance will probably pay.

 

Britney out of all the trainwrecks is the best driver, this minor offence aside.

As nutty as she is she doesn't drive under the influence.

yes and yes, to be honest it comes as no surprise anymore what she does, in fact the only thing that would, is if she retired gracefully and tried to be a good mother to her children.

Britney should take responsibility for her actions, and she got out of her car and checked both cars for damage, but there wasn't any noticeable damage. The other car had a chip of paint cracked below the bumper and the owner filed a report. There is nothing wrong with that, but a bit petty if you ask me. Britney has not complained about being charged or has tried to pay anyone off, she has set a court date and will be charged, so know the whole story before you judge someone as dumb.

I know, its hardly a 'hit and run' I'd use that term as someone running someone over and then driving on. :blink:

 

How far does she have to get out off control before you Britney fans will stop defending her actions. There are loads of celebrities that have children, get divorced, have their pictures in the paper, but they don't all self destruct and attention seek.

Are you serious? The girl could go out and eat a cookie and over a hundred cameras would be taking pictures. And how would this help her album at all? It would only weaken the sales! :rolleyes:

 

Tyler's right - the press can make ANYTHING 'news' with Britney - if, as he suggests, eats a cookie, the headline the next day is about how 'her life is so horrific she feels the need to binge eat junk food to make herself feel better after her rocky personal life and turbulent divorce'. The girl gets no PEACE!

I can see both sides of the coin here - yes, she is definitely a victim of the press, and the way they continually hound her and invent stories around her is pretty fukkin' horrendous and it's little wonder that she goes off the rails a bit, it would probably drive anyone a bit mad.... But on the other, I see some incredibly foolish actions on her part, not least the way she goes around raising her kid, and when a child's welfare and safety is in the firing line here, I'm afraid that this is where I lose sympathy rapidly....

 

That and the fact that she's driving without a license and clearly without due care and attention, well, there's really no excuse for that either, the girl can certainly afford a Chauffeur, there's obviously a reason why her license to drive was revoked......

But, I still fail to see all that silly media back then about shaving her head. LOADS of woman shave their heads, most woman with cancer have no hair (shaved heads), and the press calling Britney out of controll, freak, tormented, what message is that sending cancer patients.

Did Britney have cancer...?? No, so it's a bit of a silly comparison really mate.... And, I dunno how you can deny that her actions are at best desperate attention seeking and at worst, a symptom of someone with a pretty severe mental disorder... She has kids man, she really needs to get a grip and get some psychological help.. Pronto....

She has made some foolishe mistakes. But there will be 3-4 day periods every week where we will not see Britney at all and that's because she stays hulled up in her house so the the kids don't have to be around the paparazzi. When she does NOT have the kids that's when we see her out partying and $h!t, so I think she is doing fine when it comes to parenting. She has made mistakes with Sean but that's because that was her first child, and she was learning. When has there been an issue with Jayden? There hasn't.
