1980 RETRO RECORDS OF THE YEAR

 :cheer: :yahoo: :w00t:

YES THE RETRO RECORD OF THE YEARS (UP UNTIL 1997) GAME HERE!!!

Vote for your favourite Top20 (or minimum Top10) from the list of 50 Records from 1980.

Your First choice (Favourite) song will score 20 pts, 2nd = 19 Pts....down to 20th = 1 point. Please state in your list if you are scoring by position or Points.

I am playing this game across both BuzzJack & UKMix. Therefore if you vote please can you only vote in one of the sites threads especially if you have a different name on each site (like me).

For each year 1964 to 1997 inclusive & games (*) for the years 1960-1; 1962-3 & two alphabetically track name split lists for the 1950s. There are 50 tracks that I feel best represent the year* in popular music. This certainly does not always mean the biggest hits of the year, but tracks that over time have come to best represent the year.

Please note for the purpose of this game there are no Xmas songs in any of these lists, as I feel that they are at a disadvantage for 11 months of the year & at a great advantage in December. Also songs will only feature once for the most well-known or definitive version of a song (example “Without You” will only appear in 1972 for Nilsson, but will be absent in 1994 for Mariah Carey).

Also please don’t mention that I have put the song in the wrong year as the year the track was recorded, released (on an album), a hit (peaked) in the UK, a hit (peaked) in the USA can result in three of four different answers, and there will be literally hundreds of songs that fall into that category.

For each game you will have four weeks to get your votes in. I will be posting two of these Games a Week at the weekend.

(VOTING RULES FOR SPECIFIC GAME 1950s: Top25 make the Record of The Decade Final; 1960s & 1990s: Top 4 From Each Game make the Final, 5th to 10th make the Play-offs; 1970s & 1980s: Top 3 each year make the Final, 4th to 8th make the Play-Offs. PLUS: Your choices of missing songs being included in the relevant Play-offs)

Phase 2: The Record Of The Decades Finals will result in the following numbers making the Final 200 (1950s: Top20; 1960s: Top50, 1970s Top45; 1980s Top45; 1990s Top40), where they will be split into 4 Quarter Finals, leading to the Final 50 Songs of the Retro Record Game

Looking at that list, you have to concede - 1980 was one helluva brilliant year for pop music. It's almost embarrassing putting songs in a top 20 order, because every one of the songs I've chosen I love to this day.... anyway - it's a difficult choice, but here goes....

1 (20 points) David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes

2 ABBA - The Winner Takes It All

3 Blondie - Atomic

4 Joy Division - Love will tear us apart

5 Korgis - Everybody's gotta learn sometime

6 Blondie - Call Me

7 John Lennon - Starting Over

8 Kate Bush - Babooshka

9 Peter Gabriel - Games without frontiers

I totally agree, 1980 was one of 5 years where I had an initial shortlist of over 100 songs (the other years were 1965, 1967, 1979 & 1984) & it was incredibly hard to whittle down to just 50. To think there were some years where my initial shortlist was under 50 (coughs: 1974, 1987 & 1988).

Anyway my Top20:

1. David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes (20 Pts)

2. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

3. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

4. Kate Bush - Babooshka

5. Abba - The Winner Takes It All

6. Blondie - Atomic

7. Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers

11. Madness - Embarrassment

12. Diana Ross - Upside Down

13. Michael Jackson - Rock With You

14. Martha & The Muffins - Echo Beach

15. Split Enz - I Got You

16. Madness - Baggy Trousers

17. Paul McCartney - Coming Up

18. Bob Marley & Wailers - Could You Be Loved

19. John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over

20. Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me

What a difficult choice to whittle it down to just 20

20 pts David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes

Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down

The Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom

The Lambrettas - Poison Ivy

Bad Manners - Special Brew & Lip Up Fatty

A lot of these would definitely have made my list instead of some of the cack you've got there! I guess it just goes to show the strength of 1980 when you've got rubbish like Billy Joel  , Barbara Streisand :puke2: and Hot Chocolate :puke: on the list. Oh well... here's my list anyway

1. David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes

2. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

BUMP:

Going forward with the two ROTY Games I'll be posting tomorrow, I'm going to make a couple of rule changes.

Therefore retrospectively:

Firstly I'm going to keep the voting open for just two weeks (instead of four).

Second, for the 1980 ROTY Game you can NOMINATE two songs from this year (1980) that are missing from the shortlist of 50 that I have selected (if you have already voted either PM me with your selections) or EDIT your original post.

After two weeks I will then post the shortlist of song's you've selected (unless they are to appear in another ROTY Game) for you to vote for your favourites with the winning song (or in event of a tie – songs) qualifying for the Record Of The Decade Playoffs.

Motorhead - Ace Of Spades (20 points)

AC\DC - You Shook Me All Night Long

Blondie - Call Me

David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes

Stevie Wonder - Masterblaster (Jammin')

Kate Bush - Babooshka

Michael Jackson - Rock With You

Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Pretenders - Brass In Pocket

Split Enz - I Got You

George Benson - Give Me The Night

Abba - The Winner Takes It All

Queen - Another One Bites The Dust

Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me

Abba - Super Trooper

Blondie - Atomic

Donna Summer - On The Radio

John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over

Blondie - The Tide Is High

TiP Is it right that we keep our original lists and then add two extra tracks as nominations but we don't include them in our list of 20.

Motorhead - Ace Of Spades (20 points)

Cure - A Forest 19 points

Jam - Going Underground 15 points

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 13 points

Specials - Too Much Too Young 10 points
