Posted September 22, 200717 yr 1980 RETRO RECORDS OF THE YEAR :cheer: :yahoo: :w00t:  YES THE RETRO RECORD OF THE YEARS (UP UNTIL 1997) GAME HERE!!! Vote for your favourite Top20 (or minimum Top10) from the list of 50 Records from 1980. Your First choice (Favourite) song will score 20 pts, 2nd = 19 Pts....down to 20th = 1 point. Please state in your list if you are scoring by position or Points. I am playing this game across both BuzzJack & UKMix. Therefore if you vote please can you only vote in one of the sites threads especially if you have a different name on each site (like me). For each year 1964 to 1997 inclusive & games (*) for the years 1960-1; 1962-3 & two alphabetically track name split lists for the 1950s. There are 50 tracks that I feel best represent the year* in popular music. This certainly does not always mean the biggest hits of the year, but tracks that over time have come to best represent the year. Please note for the purpose of this game there are no Xmas songs in any of these lists, as I feel that they are at a disadvantage for 11 months of the year & at a great advantage in December. Also songs will only feature once for the most well-known or definitive version of a song (example “Without You” will only appear in 1972 for Nilsson, but will be absent in 1994 for Mariah Carey). Also please don’t mention that I have put the song in the wrong year as the year the track was recorded, released (on an album), a hit (peaked) in the UK, a hit (peaked) in the USA can result in three of four different answers, and there will be literally hundreds of songs that fall into that category. For each game you will have four weeks to get your votes in. I will be posting two of these Games a Week at the weekend. (VOTING RULES FOR SPECIFIC GAME 1950s: Top25 make the Record of The Decade Final; 1960s & 1990s: Top 4 From Each Game make the Final, 5th to 10th make the Play-offs; 1970s & 1980s: Top 3 each year make the Final, 4th to 8th make the Play-Offs. PLUS: Your choices of missing songs being included in the relevant Play-offs) Phase 2: The Record Of The Decades Finals will result in the following numbers making the Final 200 (1950s: Top20; 1960s: Top50, 1970s Top45; 1980s Top45; 1990s Top40), where they will be split into 4 Quarter Finals, leading to the Final 50 Songs of the Retro Record Game A: Vote for your favourite 20 (minimum 10 out of the following:) Abba - Super Trooper Abba - The Winner Takes It All AC\DC - You Shook Me All Night Long Barbra Streisand - Woman In Love Bette Midler - The Rose Billy Joel - It's Still Rock And Roll To Me Blondie - The Tide Is High Blondie - Call Me Blondie - Atomic Bob Marley & Wailers - Could You Be Loved Cure - A Forest David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno Diana Ross - Upside Down Donna Summer - On The Radio Genesis - Turn It On Again George Benson - Give Me The Night Hot Chocolate - No Doubt About It Jam - Going Underground Joe Jackson - It's Different For Girls John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart Kate Bush - Babooshka KC & the Sunshine Band - Please Don't Go Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love Kool and The Gang - Celebration Korgis - Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime Lipps Inc - Funky Town Madness - Embarrassment Madness - Baggy Trousers Martha & The Muffins - Echo Beach Michael Jackson - Rock With You Motorhead - Ace Of Spades Nolans - I'm In The Mood For Dancing Odyssey - Use It Up And Wear It Out Olivia Newton-John/ELO - Xanadu OMD - Enola Gay Paul McCartney - Coming Up Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me Pretenders - Brass In Pocket Queen - Another One Bites The Dust Randy Crawford - One Day I'll Fly Away Sheena Easton - 9 To 5 (Morning Train) Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short Specials - Too Much Too Young Split Enz - I Got You Stevie Wonder - Masterblaster (Jammin') UB40 - Food For Thought B: Nominate Two songs from 1980 MISSING from this 50 track shortlist. September 22, 200717 yr Looking at that list, you have to concede - 1980 was one helluva brilliant year for pop music. It's almost embarrassing putting songs in a top 20 order, because every one of the songs I've chosen I love to this day.... anyway - it's a difficult choice, but here goes.... 1 (20 points) David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes 2 ABBA - The Winner Takes It All 3 Blondie - Atomic 4 Joy Division - Love will tear us apart 5 Korgis - Everybody's gotta learn sometime 6 Blondie - Call Me 7 John Lennon - Starting Over 8 Kate Bush - Babooshka 9 Peter Gabriel - Games without frontiers 10 Martha and the Muffins - Echo Beach 11 Joe Jackson - Different for girls 12 Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb 13 Pretenders - Brass in Pocket 14 Specials - Too Much Too Young 15 UB40 - Food for thought 16 Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short 17 Motorhead - Ace of Spades 18 Donna Summer - On the Radio 19 Lipps Inc - Funky town 20 Madness - Embarrassment

September 22, 200717 yr Author Looking at that list, you have to concede - 1980 was one helluva brilliant year for pop music. It's almost embarrassing putting songs in a top 20 order, because every one of the songs I've chosen I love to this day.... anyway - it's a difficult choice, but here goes.... I totally agree, 1980 was one of 5 years where I had an initial shortlist of over 100 songs (the other years were 1965, 1967, 1979 & 1984) & it was incredibly hard to whittle down to just 50. To think there were some years where my initial shortlist was under 50 (coughs: 1974, 1987 & 1988). Anyway my Top20: 1. David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes (20 Pts) 2. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 3. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb 4. Kate Bush - Babooshka 5. Abba - The Winner Takes It All 6. Blondie - Atomic 7. Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers 8. September 28, 200717 yr Author BUMP: Going forward with the two ROTY Games I'll be posting tomorrow, I'm going to make a couple of rule changes. Therefore retrospectively: Firstly I'm going to keep the voting open for just two weeks (instead of four). Second, for the 1980 ROTY Game you can NOMINATE two songs from this year (1980) that are missing from the shortlist of 50 that I have selected (if you have already voted either PM me with your selections) or EDIT your original post. After two weeks I will then post the shortlist of song's you've selected (unless they are to appear in another ROTY Game) for you to vote for your favourites with the winning song (or in event of a tie – songs) qualifying for the Record Of The Decade Playoffs.
