Why has Soft Cell - Tainted Love become so popular now with sampling and cover versions. Rhianna sampled it and now the Pussycat Dolls have cover the tune!!

:o

Rhianna's version is so over played!!

I cute like Maralyn Mansons version! I hate those dolls. Only one of them sings. Whats the point of the other 10 members? Plus there version is more bubblegum pop.

And the really ironic thing is that the Soft Cell version is a cover anyway.

Tainted Love is one of those great songs though. It sounds good almost whatever you do to it. The Gloria Jones original is great, as is the Soft Cell cover. I also like the Marilyn Manson version. I've heard a couple of decent punk versions of it as well. And yes, as songs relying heavily on samples go, Rhianna's S.O.S is pretty good.

The Pussycat Dolls recorded their version well before Rihanna did. ;)
the funny thing is...Marc Almond (Soft Cell) HATES the tune.... and yep, the original Northern Soul version is great, too.

Why does he hate it?

He's probably sick of it by now, he's probably had to play it so many times. He also could be a little annoyed that Soft Cell's biggest/defining hit is a cover version and not one he wrote himself. Or perhaps he considers it one of their cheesier/poppier moments. Or maybe he has other reasons. But it's not that unusual for an act to end up hating their biggest hit.

Oddly, Gloria Jones said she thought Soft Cell's version was much better than hers.

ghostwriter's on the money - Almond begrudgingly played it at the Soft Cell reunion a few years back, then quit it halfway through to rounds of applause... the thing is, even Soft Cell fans hate the song. Probably because it's one of their worst singles and they've had far better moments, if not bigger hits.
A bit like Whitney being sick of I Will Always Love You. ;)

Or Pete Burns sick of you spin me right round...

The Soft Cell tune is biggest tune of that year beating Ultravox - vienna to the biggest selling singles of that year it came out.

More people cover the Soft Cell version that the Gloria Jones version

Yeah Pete Burns did say how much he HATED You Spin Me Round. -_-
Mr Burns, bless him... I wonder how he's coping being locked up in Wandsworth?!?!? :o :o

i read that they put a cover on the b-side and so even though it was the biggest hit in american of the early 80s (or something like that) they got about $1.50 in royalties.

i read that hes got a new album coming out in october and its all gonna be covers.

any listened to that crappy tears for fears record that was out last year. what c**p! even worse than the crazy frog that was on the same label

then again wiki tells us that this might because the genius of the group might have not been to two old blokes that are in the band

Ian Stanley/Tears for fears info

The success came with their third single "Mad World" which hit the top 3 in the UK in December 1982. Their first album, The Hurting, was released in March 1983. For this album (and the next), keyboard player and composer Ian Stanley and drummer Manny Elias were considered full members of the band

Ian Stanley (born 28 Feb 1957) was a member of the British band Tears For Fears. He played the keyboards on the group's first three albums and co-wrote (with Roland Orzabal) most of their songs. He also was the main producer of their material together with Chris Hughes at his Wool Hall studio in Bath. He has appeared in some of the best Tears For Fears promotional clips, including "Mothers Talk", "Shout", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and "Head Over Heels." He toured with the band on two consequetive trips around the world. Hughes and Stanley were initially drafted in again for the Seeds of Love sessions which resulted in the B-side "Always in the Past" and "My Life In The Suicide Ranks", and in their contribution as musicians on the single "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". Orzabal and Smith decided to go their own way after that.

In recent years, Stanley has continued to produce. This included the ill-fated 2nd Propaganda album and Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes album. He also contributed to the Sisters of Mercy re-recording of Temple of Love, a Teutonic smash supporting the collection Some Girls Wander by Mistake. He also produced the Human League's Octopus album. Stanley also does A&R for Warners/EastWest but leaves in 1998.

He has also produced Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, A-ha, The Pretenders, Republica, Naimee Coleman, Stephanie Kirkham, Natalie Imbruglia, Lucia and Hal.

His most recent work was producing The Beautiful South's album "Superbi" (2006).

The Tears for Fears comeback was disappointing to say the least.... like Eurythmics, it seems difficult to recapture that spark when you've been apart for so long. Saying that, though, TFF had a faultless run of hit singles.

Stanley was an important member of the backing band, but they were only ever 2 official TFF members - Smith and Orzabal until the split in 1990/91 when Orzabal carried on the band as a one-piece.

Going back to Soft Cell - their reunion and comeback album Cruely without Beauty was superb - electro heaven... definitely worth checking out, they've lost none of their skills for writing brilliant songs. I saw one of their reunion gigs a few years ago, and again - top class.

Great news that Almond has recovered from the bike smash that nearly killed him.... he's hugely underrated as a singer and songwriter in the UK. And if you get the chance, his autobiography Tainted Life is a hilarious, enthralling and eye-opening read. Then there's In Search of the Pleasure Palace, a book about his travels to the darker parts of the world, which is one of my favourite books - expertly written and un-putdownable.
