This was very difficult although where the hell were these records:

Adam and the Ants - Ant Music & Dog Eat Dog

The Jam - Start

The Clash - Bankrobber

Hazel O'Connor - Eighth Day

Visage - Fade to Grey

Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down

The Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom

The Undertones - My Perfect Cousin

The Lambrettas - Poison Ivy

Bad Manners - Special Brew & Lip Up Fatty

The Vapors - Turning Japanese

A lot of these would definitely have made my list instead of some of the cack you've got there! I guess it just goes to show the strength of 1980 when you've got rubbish like Billy Joel  , Barbara Streisand :puke2: and Hot Chocolate :puke: on the list. Oh well... here's my list anyway

As I've said before when I've played these games...... It is not about my personal taste in music, it is about selecting a diverse list of tracks that best represent the year in question across the different genres of music available that year.

Personally I definitely prefer the likes of Adam Ant, The Jam - Start, The Clash - Bankrobber, Hazel O'Connor & The Undertones to many of the songs that made this list.

As for Visage - Fade to Grey & Adam and the Ants - Ant Music they appear in the 1981 ROTY Game, but I suspect you'll be less than thrilled that the likes of Air Supply, Dire Straits, Foreigner, Hall & Oates, Reo Speedwagon, Rick Springfield & Dolly Parton are also in that game at the expense of some cooler, credible tracks that probably both you & I would prefer.

How on earth did you guess

Still at least they're there in 81. Please say Stand and Deliver will be there as well. Guess I'll have to wait to find out.

I always preferred Hazel O'Connor's 'Will You?'... maybe for the 1981 list? Was it 1981 or 1980?

1981 & it is in the ROTY Game.

Just out of interest, how have you decided upon which year to put each song.

How come Blondie gets three songs on the list whereas Simple Minds, The Beat, Paul McCartney, The Vapors, Stacy Lattislaw, Roxy Music, Ultravox, The Cramps, The Gap Band, U2, The Rolling Stones, The Skids, XTC, Devo, Dr Hook, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Clash, The Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, The Whispers, Elvis Costello, Iron Maiden etc, etc, etc… don't get any?

And how come a total non-hit by an MOR artist (The rose by Bette Midler) is on your list instead of any of the above? I bet if you stopped 1000 people on the street and asked them what music best represented 1980 not one of them would come up with that! Is it a personal favourite?

I like the retro board for it's individualism and diversity, something not represented by this list.

This "game" would be so much improved by letting people list their individual top 20s for each year - rather like the "Albums of the decade" threads we've been doing for the last few weeks. So far not one LP has been ascribed to the wrong decade, so you can probably trust us not to do anything silly like put a record that was released in November 1980 in the 1981 list (Fade to grey by Visage).

This list feels artificially "packed" with records that aren't particularly relevant to the year in question - which means the results will be unrepresentative of the tastes of the people on this board - something that will be even more true in the later stages. Ultimately, despite your protestations, this list represents your opinions, not ours.

Count me out.

Well put 45cat. This summed up my feelings a lot better than I did in my previous post.

man i like your style, youre cool!!! yeah man!!! provoke discussion rather than doing yet another frickin pointless list.

well if i was doing these records in the pub quiz none i dont think non of our team would put down as any as being from 1980s. like the 1983 record by genesis which we alway date as 1978. maybe the 1980s didnt start in music until 1982  maybe the jews and eithiopians are right maybe its not 1980 rather 1973

the best albums of the year would be better if you just had 80s places and then you had to debate the merits by taking things out and in, and only having one artist per album.

also if he's gonna do one for every year up to 1997 its just gonna get clogged up with lists

hmm.. interesting thread indeed, but the glareing omissions wont make it very reprisentitive.

starting in 1980? that barely qualifies as 'retro'

maybe a better way would have been to let members niminate say, ten, of their top tracks from the year and use that as a fair reprisentation of taste here. but ok, you are running it with the other site and the time consuming logistics of my idea would make it prohibitive?..

ive been thinking of something like this for ages but a) there wasnt the traffic in here and B) it was too time consuming for me to organise!

ill do mine later but doubt that ill vote 20 acts as ill not vote for the sake of it but for acts who i regard as deserving a vote!

Well seeing as you obviously can't read my original post - This Game goes back to the 1950s.

I'm posting two games per week:

Week 1 : 1970 & 1980

Week 2 : 1960-1 & 1990

Week 3 : 1971 & 1981

Week 4 : 1962-3 & 1991

Week 5 : 1972 & 1982

Week 6 : 1964 & 1992

Week 7 : 1973 & 1983

Week 8 : 1965 & 1993

WeeK 9 : 1974 & 1984

Week 10 : 1966 & 1994

Week 11 : 1975 & 1985

Week 12 : 1967 & 1995

Week 13 : 1976 & 1986

Week 14 : 1968 & 1996

Week 15 : 1977 & 1987

Week 16 : 1969 & 1997

Week 17 : 1978 & 1988

Week 18 : 1950s (1-Z split Part 1 & 2)

Week 19 : 1979 & 1989

However seeing the negativity towards the Game on this site, then I'm quite happy to scrap posting this Game on here.

Because too many of you seem to more than happy to knock things instead of create something good yourselves.

Still how ironic this game is failing here, especially as the Record Of The (Last) Decade Games that I played on this same site was a huge success, but I guess those of you criticising this game are the same posters who then wonder why this site is in decline.

Seeing as Blondie's Call Me & The Tide Is High topped BOTH UK & US singles charts, whilst (probably their best song from 1980) Atomic also topped the UK singles chart in 1980 then they had to have three songs in this year's list.

Both Adam & The Ants in 1981 & T-Rex in 1971 will have 3 songs each as well by the way if you want to slag this off.

And how come a total non-hit by an MOR artist (The rose by Bette Midler) is on your list instead of any of the above? I bet if you stopped 1000 people on the street and asked them what music best represented 1980 not one of them would come up with that! Is it a personal favourite?

Is that the same total non hit that made USA#3 selling over 1 million singles in the USA in 1980, got nominated for a Grammy as Record of The Year that year, taken from the very popular movie "The Rose" starring Bette Midler as a Janis Joplin type character; that was the biggest AC hit in the USA of 1980; that was country #1 for Conway Twitty; that was a #1 hit in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan & Hong Kong for Miyako Harumi; a Norwegian #1 hit for Kari Bremnes; featured very memorably in the cult 2004 movie Napolean Dynamite & was recently massacred by Westlife in 2006 to great chart success?

1. Maybe you should have read my opening post regarding the year.

2. Visage - Fade To Grey did not chart until 20 December 1980 & did not reach it's chart peak of UK#8 until February 1981 during it's 15 week run on the UK charts.

3. It topped the charts in several European countries in 1981 after it's success in the UK charts.

4. It's on NOW 1981 not NOW 1980.

5. FFS the thread is meant to be a bit of thought provoking bit of fun. It is not as if it is the BRITs or the Mercury Music Awards

Its only a game, a bit of fun stop treating it like the end of the world just cause you dont like the list of songs for pete sake!
Hilarious  at the title of this thread, as Fiesta kindly put it, its only a bit of fun, if you don't like the content of the thread topic, just ignore it, let others enjoy the fun, without all the moans.

I have to say I think thisispop has done a great job compiling the list - there will always be some songs missing from our favourite acts.... but not all can possibly be included. I think it's a fair, varied, well-rounded list that I, for one, found hugely difficult to whittle down to just 20 favourites.

And as for this site being in decline - I agree - but I think it's in decline because there's too many young teens on here now who, quite frankly, are not interested in anything not stocked by their local Woolworths and are more than happy to wax lyrical about Shayne Ward and Leona Lewis whilst drubbing The Beatles and Elvis Presley. It seem the days of teens leading the way, starting revolutions and blazing trails have long gone - take a look at this week's top 20 singles - it's a pitiful selection, possibly the worst top 20 I can EVER recall. And far from accusations of being a past-it old codger - I LOVE music - just not the safe, diluted, banal rubbish rammed down our throats on Radio One, MTV and the endless brain-numbingly dull talent shows (thank you Mr Cowell and Miss Walsh).

Great music these days is consigned to late night shows on Radio Two, if we're lucky..... regardless of how incredible an artists' music is - radio seems to bafflingly decide what to play by the age of the act - not the quality of their output. How ridiculous is that?

true, i didnt read the full thread as this morning time was very tight and i had a load of catching up to do, so sorry, on that i stand corrected.

instead of admin moaning about the moaners , maybe they should take on board what the regular posters here have all said! i for one understands that TIP's idea is a good one and involves alot of time and effort which IS appreciated.

as this is a popularity contest why not invite nominations from the retro posters? so what if barabara fcuking streisand doesnt get nominated? that just proves that she wont figure in the result anyway!

id also add that seeing as most of the admin on this site are well over 30 IF they thought retro is declining (which i wouldnt agree with) then maybe they ought to POST MORE in here instead of playing silly games with the kids in the lounge. <_<

Couldn't have put it better myself

There are some that just pick holes in any thread, regardless of effort put in, if they dont have anything positive to say,or add half decent topics themselves, maybe they should stay out of Retro, <_<
