Sound begins on Saturday October 20 on BBC2 and will continue in a Saturday afternoon slot. Thirteen shows have been commissioned, with another 13 to follow “if all goes well”. The show will be hosted by Radio One DJ Annie Mac and new signing Nick Grimshaw and will focus on new UK music. Journalists were shown a 10-minute edit of the pilot programme, which includes live music from Pigeon Detectives and Calvin Harris, together with interviews with Kate Nash and N-Dubz and a feature on the Underage festival. Sound is part of the Corporation’s new offering for 12 to 16-year-olds, BBC Switch, which also includes a five-hour Radio One slot on Sunday nights with shows from Annie Mac and Kelley Osbourne. BBC Switch will also partner with the first Radio One Under 18s event, to be held at Wembley Arena in November. The event will be hosted by Radio One DJs and feature UK and international artists Andy Parfitt, controller Radio One, 1Xtra and BBC Switch says, “This is a big step in delivering the vision that was set out in Creative Futures. The BBC connects with young children in a very significant way, but when they reach their secondary school years this relationship is not as strong. “Our aim is to make distinctive and powerful content 12 to 16-year-olds can embrace and through our work with BBC Vision, Radio One and online I feel we are achieving that. We’ve worked hard to really get to know this audience and the insights we have collected are at the heart of everything we will do. This announcement completes a wide range of changes and initiatives across which all deliver this October - together they give us a great opportunity to build the BBC's relationship with younger audiences.”
