Posted September 27, 200717 yr I watched 'Control' last night... It's a great insight into the wonderful Joy Division.... I'd recommend it to anyone.. Their music still sounds as fresh today as it did when released.
September 28, 200717 yr I watched 'Control' last night... It's a great insight into the wonderful Joy Division.... I'd recommend it to anyone.. Their music still sounds as fresh today as it did when released. I'd say that Joy Division's music sounds a lot more advanced and ahead of its time than about 99.9% of what passes for "indie" these days tbh, which is a pretty sad indictment of today's Indie scene really... I too look very much forward to seeing this film..
September 28, 200717 yr Author I totally agree with you.. The majority of 'indie' these days is rubbish pop.. but hey-ho!
September 28, 200717 yr the clips I've seen look absolutely fantastic. The (unknown) actor who plays Curtis is eerily like him, isn't he?
October 16, 200717 yr 24 Hour Party People is one of my favourite movies. The whole 'scene' back then sure was something. Don't you think Joy Division is a little overrated because of the death of Ian Curtis? I mean, here they are today getting MORE press about his suicide.
October 16, 200717 yr overrated??good god!yeh, people listened carefully to joy division after the death of Ian,but,overrated...?not at all... "indie scene" is descending now,yes..

Joy Division/New Order/Factory Records created Indie as we know it, that simple, they paved the way for the likes of The Smiths, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Radiohead, Blur, even the likes of Nirvana and Pixies... No JD, no Indie scene, full stop... Over-rated..?? Not a a bit of it...

Not a a bit of it... well..... im not so sure that 'indie' wouldnt have happend anyway, in fact im sure it would. the sound was already coming out of 'new wave' and punk, which in turn came from the 60's, id suggest by that logic... no beatles, no joy division. all the punk/new wave/indie acts were doing was developing on the ground laid down by the beatles, stones, kinks, yardbirds, cream, small faces, who, animals etc etc etc.
October 17, 200717 yr Ok how about this? Would anyone have even given New Order a first listen if Ian Curtis hadn't killed himself?

October 19, 200717 yr yes because........... The popular opinion out there is that they really suck. Especially compared to J D. They took their sound in a pretty different direction too. Like for instance the song "No Regrets".
October 22, 200717 yr yes because........... The popular opinion out there is that they really suck. Especially compared to J D. They took their sound in a pretty different direction too. Like for instance the song "No Regrets". Err, what "popular opinion" would that be then...? Would that be the "popular opinion" that sent classics like "Blue Monday" supernova....???
October 23, 200717 yr Finally the Joy Division movie is coming out in Canada! Check this. Can't wait. Control

Like for instance the song "No Regrets". Christ, if New Order had writte that pish Robbie Williams song (instead of Neil's Hannon and Tennent who should know better) then I'd agree, but they didn't. They wrote the rather great 'Regret' which sounded like a New Order song. The truth is that Joy Division owe their sound largely to Martin Hannett and you can hear this on early New Order records too. When the band moved on from him they were given the freedom to come up with new stuff cf. Blue Monday. Plus I'd say the punk bands were not building on the 'foundations' created by the Beatles, Yardbirds, Cream, Small Faces etc. I'd have said they were listening to The Sonics, The Stooges etc. Check what the Sex Pistols used to play at early gigs...it was stuff like 'No Fun'...not 'Day Tripper' or 'Lazy Sunday'.

Yeah, Hannett was almost like the fifth member of JD wasn't he...? That incredibly haunting drum sound that he captured is deffo down to him... If you listen to the stuff JD did as Warsaw and then the studio albums, the difference is unreal..... I'd agree with you assessment on the Punks as well, it was deffo more stuff like The Kinks or The Who as well as The Stooges more than The Beatles, etc..... "My Generation" can easily be seen as a Prototype Punk song.....
