Well on join this fabulous site, I thought wow, what can I do to contribute? With good old Mikey`s latest chart action pages, I suddenly thought, Vintage Charts, and retro from this very week in a year gone by! With 23 years of archive info, behind me, I decided vintage is great! So, I look forward to all your comments, after this the first Retro Vintage.

With all the latest hits from yesteryear! The first one back to October 5th 1959, no official chart then..but we do have the averaged chart, based on positions from NME, DISC, RECORD MIRROR, and MELODY MAKER...

The top 20 w/k ending 3rd Oct 1959

01 01 ONLY SIXTEEN - CRAIG DOUGLAS

02 03 HERE COMES SUMMER - JERRY KELLER

03 02 LIVING DOLL - CLIFF RICHARD

04 07 TIL I KISSED YA - EVERLY BROTHERS

05 05 MONA LISA - CONWAY TWITTY

06 04 LONELY BOY - PAUL ANKA

07 11 SOMEONE - JOHNNY MATHIS

08 06 CHINA TEA - RUSS CONWAY

09 12 THE THREE BELLS - THE BROWNS

09 25 MACK THE KNIFE - BOBBY DARIN

11 13 JUST A LITTLE TOO MUCH/SWEETER THAN YOU - RICKY NELSON

12 09 40 MILES OF BAD ROAD - DUANE EDDY

13 08 HEART OF A MAN - FRANKIE VAUGHAN

14 19 PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED - BUDDY HOLLY

15 10 LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR - CONNIE FRANCIS

16 21 SEA OF LOVE - MARTY WILDE

17 15 HIGH HOPES - FRANK SINATRA

18 16 BROKEN HEARTED MELODY - SARAH VAUGHAN

19 17 SAL`S GOT A SUGAR LIP - LONNIE DONEGAN

20 14 BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS - LONNIE DONEGAN

The 5th week at the top for CRAIG DOUGLAS in 1959, and LONNIE DONEGAN side by side himself. BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS had been all the way to number 2, and was also a hit for GLEN MASON and JOHNNY HORTON, who both took the song to number 20, in Britain. LONNIE DONEGAN`s follow up SAL`S GOT A SUGAR LIP, only got to number 15 though. Was it all over for him? Well no it wasn`t because in 1960, MY OLD MAN`S A DUSTMAN took him to the top for a 3rd time. Despite the big climb for BOBBY DARIN to joint number 9, he did not get to the very top, on the averaged chart, he had to make do with number 2, for 6 weeks!

On the Bubble in Oct 1959, outside the top 20 were...

21 PLENTY GOOD LOVIN` - CONNIE FRANCIS got to 16

23 HOLD BACK TOMORROW - MIKI AND GRIFF no higher

24 THE HONEYMOON SONG - MANUEL/MUSIC OF THE MOUNTAINS no higher

25 I`M GONNA GET MARRIED - LLOYD PRICE no higher

27 JUST KEEP IT UP - DEE CLARK no higher

28 MIDNIGHT FLYER - NAT KING COLE - got to 25

29 WALKIN` TALL - FRANKIE VAUGHAN no higher

It took DEE CLARK 16 years before his next hit, when RIDE A WILD HORSE went into the top 30, in Oct 75. FRANKIE VAUGHAN (who sadily passed away in March 99), scraped the chart with WALKIN` TALL, that later ADAM FAITH scraped the chart with in 1963.

Oct 1959, and the new releases...

MORGEN - IVO ROBIC

0LD SHEP - CLINTON FORD

TREBLE CHANCE - JOE mr piano HENDERSON

RIDDLE OF LOVE - CRAIG DOUGLAS

MR BLUE - DAVID MACBETH

SUNNY SIDE OF HEAVEN - TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD

THIS EARTH OF MINE - DON CORNELL

GRANADA - FRANK CORDELL/HIS ORCHESTRA

Well, of those new releases, it was just minor hits, and flops. MORGEN, was a bigger hit for DICKIE VALENTINE. OLD SHEP was more associated with one ELVIS PRESLEY, who scored a release in 1960, with it on the STRICTLY ELVIS E.P. TENNESEE ERNIE FORD, was slipping into obscurity, after his 1956, hits. The same for DON CORNELL, who had a number one in 1954, with HOLD MY HAND. FRANK CORDELL, missed with GRANADA (an old piece even then, although covered by the mighty FRANK SINATRA in the 1961 top 20).

Here are the top tv shows, for Oct 1959...

01 DOUBLE YOUR MONEY 5.5 million

01 DOTTO

03 TAKE YOUR PICK 5.3

04 CONCENTRATION 5.1

05 PROBATION OFFICER 4.9

05 LIBERAL PARTY BROADCAST

07 WAGON TRAIN 4.8

07 EMERGENCY WARD TEN FRI

07 EMERGENCY WARD TEN WEDS

07 SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE PALLADIUM

Quiz shows were the winners in 59. DOUBLE YOUR MONEY with HUGHIE GREEN. DOTTO was a game based on JOIN THE DOTS, the kids thing, introduced by JIMMY HANLEY at this point, SHAW TAYLOR later hosted this one (he of POLICE FIVE fame). TAKE YOUR PICK (later revived by DES O, CONNER) was introduced by MICHAEL MILES. CONCENTRATION was based on the card game (pairs), later to be revived by NICK JACKSON and BOB CAROLGEES (minus SPIT THE DOG). PROBATION OFFICER was a drama series starring JOHN PAUL, and HONOR BLACKMAN. WAGON TRAIN the vintage western series. EMERGENCY WARD 10, was ITVs first twice weekly, soap set in Oxbridge Hospital. SUNDAY AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM was introduced at this point by BRUCE FORSYTH (who had taken over from TOMMY TRINDER in 1958).

All those shows were from ITV, the BBC struggled in the tv ratings badly, with JUKE BOX JURY with David Jacobs (the compere of radio`s PICK OF THE POPS, at this point at on Saturdays). It was JUKE BOX JURY that SUSAN STRANKS (later of MAGPIE and PAPERPLAY) first found fame on, as a panelist, judging the week`s new releases.

Hope you all enjoyed this look back to 1959, Next week, we head to Oct 1962, for more of the same! Cheers Everyone.

01 01 ONLY SIXTEEN - CRAIG DOUGLAS - but not as good as Sam Cooke's original

02 03 HERE COMES SUMMER - JERRY KELLER - a great song

03 02 LIVING DOLL - CLIFF RICHARD - I prefer his 1986 Comic Relief version with the Young Ones

16 21 SEA OF LOVE - MARTY WILDE - The 1984 Honeydrippers version is the definitive version IMHO

17 15 HIGH HOPES - FRANK SINATRA - I love Sinatra, but this is too silly for my liking

20 14 BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS - LONNIE DONEGAN - I never understood how a Brit sung an anti-British song

Glad you 2, like the concept. Thought it would be a good idea. In all, I intend to go back as far as 1956, in future as well!! Keep the under 30s on their toes, what! Bsically decided to do this because I have been totally appalled by the BBCs Pick of the Pops with Mr Winton, and indeed the garbage of last week, with Harry and Paul, Humour, was it surposed to be funny? It would have been slightly better if they had used the first proper Radio One, top 30, but they didn`t even do that! On an averaged chart, you get the "proper" chart from the original Pick of the Pops shows...salute the late ALAN FREEMAN properly, I say...

Welcome to the site Trev, great idea.

We don't see many 50s charts online, so this is useful, and

i like the commentary you give.

You will find more retro charts posted by me and others in

the archives.

yeah i never dared go back to the 50's partly because i was too young to remember them ... think im the oldest member on buzzjack (?) and most retro regulars are mere kids! :P lol... only joking, but the 80's seem to be the most popular with MY fav retro era, the 60's doesnt often stimulate much interest. mind you, with new members joining this forums getting some decent traffic now :)

Well, a big thanks to Rob and Mark. On LONNIE DONEGAN, and the BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS...this was actually a take on us English, because in the first couple, of lines Lonnie, says "this here is the story of the battle of new orleans, faught between them there Yankees, and those English people". Now, does everyone know, that the late Mr Donegan, was Scottish? So, a inhouse joke, came from the man himself! Rather, in the style of one WILLIE CARSON, ex jockey (now racing pundit), always joking, winding us all up! Yep, Willie is Scottish too, folks!

I do think that the 50s should be covered more today. Thats where the roots of todays music came from, after all. The purpose of Winton`s radio 2 show should indeed be 50s, 60s, 70s....and I fully believe radio one, should have a retro chart show to play 1980 - 2006, in the style of JIMMY SAVILE`s old progs. Quite frankly Pick of the Pops, Winton, and Philip Swern, should have ended years ago, you don`t need rundowns and all that under-researched c**p. Someone, should tell Dale, that in the 60s and 70s, new releases came out on Fridays, not Mondays!!!

Not to impressed though, when people start having a go at singers like Englebert Humperdinck, Val Doonican, Mr O` Conner, Ken Dodd etc...tell you when they do the circuit, of theatre, they entertain a packed house!!! Remember Ken and the Hump, both sold millions of records...Anyone listen to Mike Sweeney, on the b***s that is Gold? He constantly goes on slagging all those people off, don`t no why coz he never plays them anyway!! Mr biased, ego-tistic Sweeney, could well appear on radio 2, with egos like Evans, Ross, Wright etc. It would be ego, all round!!! Talent, before Names, ay Mike and co!!!!

Glad you 2, like the concept. Thought it would be a good idea. In all, I intend to go back as far as 1956, in future as well!!

should go back further to the 1940s and 1930s when it was just about sheet music rather than records.

Welcome thanks for the intro as well, interesting feature, and a good idea for the forum, the young members will learn more from the charts of yesteryear.

It be nice to see an odd old chart in the Sunday Chart Show thread from the same week, once in a while.

Hi Trev! ^_^

I don't look at too many vintage charts (Being 13  ) But thanks for posting these, A lot of memebers will appreciate it ^_^

yeah i knew donnegan was scottish and did get the joke! :)

im not sure theres much mileage in the 50's tbh, the styles were well dated, unlike the 60's where the template for modern pop/rock was born... (groups with guitars, drums...), but i have no trouble with the 50's being more represented, though id welcome the 60's more.

i never liked 60's balladeers much, they were for our 'mums' and were too square for us young dudes! lol, however i must admit, they could SING, unlike todays pretty boyband clones like westlife for eg where it takes 4-5 of them to try (and fail) to have the impact of a REAL singer like hump, doonican, dodd... in fact ken dodd had a terrific singing voice! i just didnt like his material :)

id suggest posting what you think youd like to, things will find their own level, itll either get responses or it wont. :)

For abc1, and anyone else 1952, before the Record Chart began

Lets start with the 1st record chart 14th Nov 52

01 HERE IN MY HEART - AL MARTINO

02 YOU BELONG TO ME - JO STAFFORD

Al MARTINO entered the chart on 6th Sept 52 at 20, then 18 13 08 03 02 02 01 01 01

So he would have hit the top on 24th Oct 52, so he really had 12 weeks at number one!!!

Before HERE IN MY HEART, the HOMING WALTZ topped sheet music sales, that hit the top on 22nd Aug 52, for 9wks

Other charttoppers for 52 were thus...

I put 2 artists for some titles coz its not totally possible what artist, was selling the most, coz with sheet music its just song titles :)

For abc1, and anyone else 1952, before the Record Chart began
