Posted October 10, 200717 yr The first era of Nightwish ended with an open letter in which the band fired it´s formidable front women Tarja Turunen. Was this to be the end of Nightwish? No one knew. People took sides, and a true media circus began. Slowly the ruckus ended in silence, and the band retreated to their own confines bringing to life what was to be the future. And now? This sixth Nightwish album 'Dark Passion Play' stands at a dividing line, separating what has been and what will become. And it stands strong; resonating the confidence of its composer. Confidence of a new time, never looking back but boldly doing whatever the heart desires. The heavenly voice of Anette Olzon carries through bright and powerful – and also more varied that of her predecessor. She truly is what Nightwish's music deserves. Despite the fact that this musical passionwork is heavy with darker atmospheres, within it still lie optimistic undertones. It tells us that even in the bleakest of times there is hope. The voyage ends safely on familiar waters. The sound of Nightwish reborn is ever-strong & unfaltering. "Easily the heaviest and most interesting album they've ever done, there's so much more going on than the warbling goth metal that they're so easily written off for. Nightwish have easily cranked the whole business up a notch." - KERRANG Hmmm okay I think that WE will be the judge of their new album thank you KERRANG! What they fukk do they know about music anyway? Okay I'm open for a listen, but lets face it this review could be a bit OTT. I wonder how much they paid them??
October 11, 200717 yr It's an okay album, but it just seems that Nightwish have just become another one of "those types of bands", whereas before they stood apart because they had a genuine Diva as their frontwoman... Anette frankly just sounds like Sharon Den Adel or Amy Lee, with no real personality of her own.. You could certainly never accuse Tarja of not having her own personality.... And the Kerrang review is just talking sh!te... Nightwish were never Goth Metal anyway, they were Symphonic Metal....

I thought they would be, getting rid of Tarja would be one of the worse things they could have done, I've always said that. Kerrang fukking annoy me, they don't have a clue what they are talking about. They're always quick to give it 5 thumbs up when it actual fact it's complete rubbish.

Actually, the weird thing is that it's actually the male vocals that are coming through stronger on this album.... If Nightwish had really wanted to draw a line under the Tarja era, I dunno why they just didn't do something completely different and have Marco do all the singing, the guy's got a good voice and he sounds different to other male vocalists in similar bands... It would've meant that Nightwish would probably still maintain their unique status, because there are frankly times when I'm listening to this album when I just think I'm listening to Within Temptation or Evanescence tbh....
October 13, 200717 yr I actually LOVE this album. I wouldn't say Tarja was better and I wouldn't say Anette was better, because they have such different styles. Tarja OBVIOUSLY has the stronger voice, but I think her voice suits the older stuff and Anettes suits the newer. I love Bye Bye Beautiful, the instrumental in 7 Days and I think The Poet and The Pendulum is a masterpiece, one of my favourite songs ever by them. Although Tarjas gone, I think their music is still pretty damn good and stands out against other Symphonic Metal bands. Anette is however, singing the older songs on tour and I'm afraid she completely butchers Wish I Had An Angel, Wishmaster and Sacrament of Wilderness. I do like her version of Ever Dream and Sleeping Sun, though. Oh, and Tarjas solo stuff is pretty weak in my opinion, but I've only heard 3 songs. Edited October 13, 200717 yr by EvMark

Sleeping Sun is one of my favourite songs by NW I highly doubt I'd like it TBH. It is completely different it's going to sound weak cos she's gone to a softer side.

I dont think this album is as good as Within Temptation's most recent one tbh, and there are some songs where Anette sounds so weak and Marco's vocals just overpower her... I really dont see the point in just replacing Tarja with someone who just aint as good and just sounds like a Sharon/Liv Kristine/Amy Lee (delete as appropriate) wannabe; Nightwish should have gone down a different path, if they really wanted to draw a line under the Tarja era completely then they should have Marco do all the vocals instead. For me, the male vocals work better on this album than the female vocals.... Musically, it's fine, but stuff like "Eva" is clearly trying to ape stuff like Within Temptation or Leaves Eyes....

I loved his voice when him and Tarja used to sing together on songs, I agree it should have been all him..
