yesterday would have been Kirsty MacColl's 48th birthday, and the day was celebrated once again with a celebration in Soho Square.

She was killed in a boating accident in Mexico in 2000 as most will know, whilst swimming in a supposed 'safe zone' with her two young sons.

Now seems as good a time as ever to highlight the ongoing campaign to bring her murderer to justice. The Mexican authorities have, so far, been dragging their feet as the guy suspected of her murder is one of the country's wealthiest men. As the organiser of the campaign, Kirsty's Mum Jean, says "If this had happened to a normal person - he would have got away with it and the whole thing would be brushed under the carpet".

The fight goes on, so PLEASE visit here and add your voice to this campaign..... the more people asking questions, the more likely it is this man will be brought to justice.

I supported this at the time of her superb 3CD career anthology "Camden to Cuba".

Along with Kate Bush & Alison Moyet she was one of the Holy Trinity of UK singers that I loved back in the 1980s.

For the uneducated.... her independent attitude & lyrical humour make Amy Winehouse & Lily Allen seem like Aly & Aj in comparison....

Kirsty MacColl - Theres A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop...(1981)

Kirsty MacColl - Terry (1984)

Kirsty MacColl - A New England (1985)

Kirsty MacColl - Days (1989)

Kirsty MacColl - England 2 Columbia 0 (2000)

Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes (2000)

(I can wait for Geri Halliwell's version that she has recorded and was planning to release as a single from a Greatest Hits album, until her old band reformed....)

That will do for now...

:D love it.

Seems our musical tastes are similar, tip - those 3 were my faves, too, along with Siouxsie.

I'm stunned that this case still hasn't been resolved - and even more saddened that our Government seem so apathetic about losing one of our greatest talents... imagine if it had been someone who was more high profile - I can't see them letting it slip then.

There's a section on the website directing you to contact your MP and demand action - I think this may be the best course of action as there seems to be a lack of any email addresses on the site for the Mexican parliament, which, I'm sure, deters people from joining the campaign.

She is sadly missed, and as you say Russ there is definately a cover up by the Mexican authorities. I am sure I read somewhere a while back that it was some rich person in a speedboat that was responsible, but all witnesses have either been bought of, or silenced.

A great artist.

She was one of Britain’s best vocalists and songwriters. It was a pity that ‘Tropical Brainstorm’ took about five years to complete and then once it was released, she did not get the chance to develop that ‘Tropical’ Cuban sound.

“In these shoes?” was a brilliant record that should have reached the ‘Top Ten’, whilst the album had many other great tracks just waiting to be discovered by the greater public.

Her death was very sad, and was even more shocking to me as her record had just been played on a pub jukebox loop in Cheadle, when my friend said ‘You know she died today…?’

“In these shoes? I don’t think so”
