Posted October 12, 200717 yr Here we go with a look at Oct 62...the averaged Chart, compiled from positions from NME, DISC, RECORD RETAILER, and MELODY MAKER. I had a email last week, asking why this averaged chart thing? Well, to all that don`t know, during 56 - 69, there was not an official chart (unlike today). Infact RECORD RETAILER was the least read, and least popular...I noticed Brian`s chart from 67, just now. He uses RR, well Brian mate, In this week in 67, I can reveal that actually on Radio 1, ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK actually stayed at number one for another week!!! The BEE GEES had to wait another week, mate :D. At this time in 67, MELODY MAKER was polling the most shops, for sales infact 150+. So, they were probably closer. Anyway the chart w/k ending thurs 12th Oct 1962... SPANISH HARLEM was a cover of BEN E. KING`s original american hit. Both, CHRIS MONTEZ and LITTLE EVA return to the charts in 1972, with there hits from this chart. The MIKE SARNE/BILLIE DAVIES hit "WILL I WHAT" was later covered by JUDGE DREAD...the story of a night out with a lady who was slightly hard of hearing. Mike singing "Will you tell me what name is?" BILLIE reply "WILL I WHAT?"...In JUDGE DREAD`s version he asks such things as "will you let me take your drawers off" etc, but this is a family forum!!! Bubbling Under... 31 PICK A BALE OF COTTON - LONNIE DONEGAN got to 13 31=IF A MAN ANSWERS - BOBBY DARIN got to 23 31=SEND ME THE PILLOW THAT YOU DREAM ON - JOHNNY TILLOTSON got to 21 34 YOUR TENDER LOOK - JOE BROWN got to 28 35 BECAUSE OF LOVE - BILLY FURY got to 19 35=CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP - DEL SHANNON got to 31 37 ADIOS AMIGO - JIM REEVES got to 27 38 A FOREVER KIND OF LOVE - BOBBY VEE got to 16 LONNIE DONEGAN coming to the end of chart career by now...JOHNNY TILLOTSON just could not follow up his 1961 charttopper (POETRY IN MOTION), and DEL SHANNON missing the top 30 for the first time. Remember the BEATLES first record pressings on the red Parlophone label, are worth quite a bit of dosh! MARTY WILDE`s career in pop was coming to an end..Marty got married in 62, and reckons thats why his hits dried up, Jealous girls, what!!! Top of the TV in Oct 62... 01 CORONATION ST WEDS 8.4MILLION 02 CORONATION ST MON 8.1 03 ARMCHAIR THEATRE 6.3 04 NO HIDING PLACE 6.1 05 MAIGRET 6.0 05 DOUBLE YOU MONEY 05 EMERGENCY WARD 10 THUR 05 VAL PARNELLS SUNDAY NIGHT 09 TAKE YOUR PICK 5.6 10 EMERGENCY WARD 10 FRI 5.5 11 ZERO ONE 12 DRAMA 62 5.2 13 Z CARS 5.1 14 TELEVISION PLAYHOUSE 15 WINNING WIDOWS 16 HARPERS WEST ONE 17 TAKE A LETTER 18 SPORTSVIEW 5.0 18 BRUCE FORSYTH SHOW 20 MAN OF THE WORLD 4.8 CORONATION STREET ruling the tv, just like 2007!! Early days for that though, with ENA SHARPLES, MINNIE CALDWELL, FLORRIE LINDLEY (Corner shop owner), JACK AND ANNIE WALKER (Rovers Return), ELSIE TANNER, ALBERT TATLOCK, EMILY BISHOP, KEN BARLOW etc...only Ken and Emily still around!! What was different in the Street then, was the fact that 90% of the cast were over 30!! Z CARS, MAIGRET were the police based serie, along with NO HIDING PLACE with RAYMOND FRANCIS and a young KEITH BARON. TAKE A LETTER was the latest quiz/game show (10 vintage chart points if you can tell me the name of the host)...HARPERS WEST ONE, was the continuing story of west London department store. Fictional drama with PLAYHOUSE, ARMCHAIR THEATRE, DRAMA 62 etc The BBC only had the number 5, 11, 13 and 18 top shows. VAL PARNELL brought entertainment on Sundays, with performers diverse as GRACIE FIELDS, and MORECAMBE AND WISE. Murder was the main investigation in order with CRAIG STEVENS in MAN OF THE WORLD (a photographer/journalist turned private eye). Top kids tv, came via BLUE PETER, and ITV`s current GERRY ANDERSON puppet series SUPERCAR.... Thats just about it for now..but DO NOT forget tomorrow afternoon for MRIB`s brand new top 30 Singles chart, plus top 10 albums, from about 2.30 ish...BFN folks!!!
October 13, 200717 yr i remember (first hand) most of those hits, i was 5. those pre-beatles charts seemed very primitive. too young for the tv, but i do remember 'supercar' the forerunner to stingray, fireball xl5 and thunderbirds.
