Here we go with a look at Oct 62...the averaged Chart, compiled from positions from NME, DISC, RECORD RETAILER, and MELODY MAKER. I had a email last week, asking why this averaged chart thing? Well, to all that don`t know, during 56 - 69, there was not an official chart (unlike today). Infact RECORD RETAILER was the least read, and least popular...I noticed Brian`s chart from 67, just now. He uses RR, well Brian mate, In this week in 67, I can reveal that actually on Radio 1, ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK actually stayed at number one for another week!!! The BEE GEES had to wait another week, mate :D. At this time in 67, MELODY MAKER was polling the most shops, for sales infact 150+. So, they were probably closer.

Anyway the chart w/k ending thurs 12th Oct 1962...

Instrumentals ruling the chart in 62, with 5 in the top 30, at 1, 19, 20, 22 and 25...Two film titles, SOME PEOPLE and THE MAN WITH GOLDEN ARM too. SPANISH HARLEM was a cover of BEN E. KING`s original american hit. Both, CHRIS MONTEZ and LITTLE EVA return to the charts in 1972, with there hits from this chart. The MIKE SARNE/BILLIE DAVIES hit "WILL I WHAT" was later covered by JUDGE DREAD...the story of a night out with a lady who was slightly hard of hearing. Mike singing "Will you tell me what name is?" BILLIE reply "WILL I WHAT?"...In JUDGE DREAD`s version he asks such things as "will you let me take your drawers off" etc, but this is a family forum!!!

The BEATLES first hit "LOVE ME DO" only got to 24, on the averaged chart...making 17 in RR, 21 in MM, 24 in DISC and 27 in NME. Remember the BEATLES first record pressings on the red Parlophone label, are worth quite a bit of dosh! MARTY WILDE`s career in pop was coming to an end..Marty got married in 62, and reckons thats why his hits dried up, Jealous girls, what!!!

CORONATION STREET ruling the tv, just like 2007!! Early days for that though, with ENA SHARPLES, MINNIE CALDWELL, FLORRIE LINDLEY (Corner shop owner), JACK AND ANNIE WALKER (Rovers Return), ELSIE TANNER, ALBERT TATLOCK, EMILY BISHOP, KEN BARLOW etc...only Ken and Emily still around!! What was different in the Street then, was the fact that 90% of the cast were over 30!! Z CARS, MAIGRET were the police based serie, along with NO HIDING PLACE with RAYMOND FRANCIS and a young KEITH BARON. TAKE A LETTER was the latest quiz/game show (10 vintage chart points if you can tell me the name of the host)...HARPERS WEST ONE, was the continuing story of west London department store. Fictional drama with PLAYHOUSE, ARMCHAIR THEATRE, DRAMA 62 etc The BBC only had the number 5, 11, 13 and 18 top shows. VAL PARNELL brought entertainment on Sundays, with performers diverse as GRACIE FIELDS, and MORECAMBE AND WISE. Murder was the main investigation in order with CRAIG STEVENS in MAN OF THE WORLD (a photographer/journalist turned private eye).

Top kids tv, came via BLUE PETER, and ITV`s current GERRY ANDERSON puppet series SUPERCAR....

Thats just about it for now..but DO NOT forget tomorrow afternoon for MRIB`s brand new top 30 Singles chart, plus top 10 albums, from about 2.30 ish...BFN folks!!!

i remember (first hand) most of those hits, i was 5. those pre-beatles charts seemed very primitive. too young for the tv, but i do remember 'supercar' the forerunner to stingray, fireball xl5 and thunderbirds.
