Coronation Street's Rovers Return pub is to undergo a makeover for the first time in years - but is not to close down.

The world-famous boozer will have a minor facelift when landlady Liz Tomlin's (Bev Callard) new husband Vernon (Ian Reddington) drafts in friends to brighten up the 105-year-old watering hole.

A spokesperson for the soap has expressly denied reports in one of today's tabloids which suggests that the pub is to close due to financial problems or turn into a gastro-pub.

They said: "To suggest that the pub will close or change radically is total nonsense. Vernon has a few ideas for new flooring and upholstery that Liz nips in the bud before they even get off the ground.

"A couple of his mates then come in and give the place a lick of paint. It will look a bit brighter and fresher but that is all - and the pub won’t even close for redecorating.

"The bar will stay in the same place, the booths will remain, as will the coloured glass. The biggest change will be a smoking area in the back yard to save punters having to stand out on the Street.

"As for the pub having financial problems that is also rubbish. The Rovers is at the heart of the Street and is a thriving business and will remain that way.

They added: "It is frustrating for us when false stories like this appear and it does cause concern for our viewers but we would like to reassure them that there is no truth in this story at all."

The last notable occasion the Rovers was renovated and refurbished was in the aftermath of the 1986 fire storyline. The establishment was nearly demolished as a result.

I'm not sure If I like this or not. As long as they don't get rid of the rovers..

The Rovers wont be going anywhere it says on the website that its not bein axed

Corrie's Sunday episode will move to Friday at 8.30pm from the 13th. :o

ITV1 is to bolster its Tuesday and Friday night schedules by moving episodes of Coronation Street and Emmerdale from their current Sunday slots.

The change is a major plank of ITV1's new look 2008 schedule, which kicks off from Saturday January 12, and which also sees the return of News at Ten with Sir Trevor McDonald two days later.

ITV said it wanted to concentrate on new 60-minute programmes in the 9pm weekday slot, with factual on Tuesdays and drama the other three nights.

Friday nights are to be given more of a weekend feel, with entertainment and comedy in peak time.

The soap rescheduling will see the current Sunday night episode of Coronation Street move to Fridays at 8.30pm.

This replicates the Monday night scheduling pattern for Coronation Street, which sees one episode air at 7.30pm and the other an hour later, straddling EastEnders on BBC1.

The Sunday night episode of Emmerdale will be shunted to a Tuesday, where it will air after the current 7pm edition, creating a 60 minute show.

An ITV spokeswoman said that when ITV1 screens live Champions League football on Tuesdays - around 12 times a year - a decision would be made on whether to screen just a 30-minute episode of the soap or move the second half-hour to another slot.

The move will mean Emmerdale permanently goes up against BBC1's soap EastEnders, which airs at 7.30pm, throwing up potential problems for the corporation on Tuesday nights.

In the past when ITV1 has screened an hour long episode of Emmerdale, EastEnders has suffered in the ratings.

Oooh I just read that :o Do you think its a better idea  Alot of people are useually in on sunday nights.
That's a bad idea. :/ Why move it to a Friday Night (When people go out etc) when people dont (usualy) go out on a Sunday?
Hmm I'm not sure... I quite like the idea tbh. It means Corrie will only be on three different nights a week, opposed to the four that it was. And a break from Friday to Monday will wet our appetites all the more. :kink:

 that is quite true :o

They have too many episodes of these soaps. It's what makes them dull because they're dragged out so much. The days when they were on 2/3 times a week was better imo.

Coronation Street's Liam Connor hits rock bottom when he's left fighting for his life after falling 200ft down a ravine.

After deciding to escape the hustle and bustle of Weatherfield for the weekend, Liam (Rob James-Collier), wife-to-be Maria (Samia Smith) and their canine companion Ozzy embark on a mini break to the Lake District.

However, while out hiking, Ozzy frees himself from his lead and scampers away. Liam eventually spots Ozzy on a ledge in the middle of a gorge, but tragedy strikes when Liam loses his footing and slips onto the rocky surface below. A panicked Maria is left no option but to leave her fiancé and head off in search of help.

Of the storyline, Rob James-Collier said: "For the first time in a while everything seems to be falling into place for Liam – he's got the dog, the baby on the way and the wedding coming up so Liam and Maria decide to go away for a nice romantic interlude in the Lakes.

"But everything goes wrong when Ozzy runs away. When Liam sees him he carefully steps down a slope and holds onto the branch. But the branch breaks and he slides down. Maria can’t hold him for ever and poor Liam falls in dramatic fashion."

He added: "Filming in the Lakes was fantastic. We had a great time although it was very, very cold! The mountain rescue team were brilliant and everything was filmed as realistically as possible."

The Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and an RAF rescue helicopter were used during shooting of the scenes over a gruelling nine-day schedule on location at Honister Slate Mine in the Lake District, where the 70 cast and crew were subjected to sub-zero temperatures.

I shall be watching.

I thought it was pretty disappointing overall.

The Liam/Maria stuff was decent, but could have been a lot better.

Blanche was funny tonight.

I love Blanche! Did you see the 'Funny Side of the Street' after? Most admitted that Blanche is by far the funniest character they've ever had. She's a brilliant actress and her timing is flawless! Dot Cotton (June Brown) - note - this is how an old lady in a soap can be genuinely funny - without resorting to Albert Steptoe impressions!
