Jack Duckworth actor Bill Tarmey is to quit Coronation Street next year, according to a report.

Tarmey is said to be prepared to sign one more year-long contract which will take him past 30 years on the ITV1 soap.

"He wants to get to three decades in Corrie, which is a huge achievement," a friend told the News Of The World.

"Bill’s not getting any younger and wants to enjoy retirement. He’s got a place in Tenerife and is looking forward to being out there.

“He is not in the best of health and does find the workload on Corrie very tiring.”

The actor underwent heart bypass surgery in 2002. Liz Dawn, who played Jack's wife Vera, left the show because of ill health last year.

STREET writers will take a swipe at Britain’s sky-high booze prices by sending The Rovers Return’s regulars abroad for cheap booze.

It all kicks off when builder Bill Webster (Peter Armitage, 54) discovers Newton & Ridley is putting up the price of a pint to nearly £2.50.

Viewers will see him rant: “It’s criminal… have you seen the state of my change? It’s not that long ago you could get a good night out and a curry for a fiver.”

Bill will be seen heading off on his booze cruise with plumber pal Roger Stiles (Andrew Dunn, 50) and their respective partners Audrey Roberts and Janice Battersby (Sue Nicholls, 64, and Vicky Entwistle, 39). A Corrie insider said: “Ale prices are a topic close to most people’s hearts in Britain.

“We are the laughing stock of Europe when it comes to the price of booze, fags and petrol.

“They just can’t understand why everything over here is so dear.

“There’s nothing new in booze runs, but what is going to happen in the Street could easily happen in real life.

“Small backstreet pubs like the Rovers are closing every day because people just can’t afford the ever-increasing price of a drink.

“The effect on a boozer like the Rovers would impact on the whole community. If a few regulars start drifting away, others will follow.”

Corrie fans will see Bill and his chums head off across the water to stock up on cheap booze at the end of next month.

Janice and Audrey  drinking pals?

Ex-Coronation Street actress Wendi Peters has agreed to make a return to the ITV soap for a one-off DVD.

The 40-year-old, who quit her role as Cilla Battersby-Brown last year, has agreed to appear in the South Africa-set special.

Her on-screen children, Chesney (Sam Aston) and Fiz (Jennie McAlpine), will also fly out for filming.

A source at the soap told The Sun: "The Battersby-Browns look a little lost without their mean matriarch Cilla.

"Fiz and Chesney are much-loved characters but without Cilla being the evil witch to their Hansel and Gretel, they've fallen a bit flat. The storylines are being kept top secret but Cilla has moved away from Las Vegas and is now working at a casino in Sun City."

Rumours suggest that Cilla has already dug her talons into another new man. The source continued: "This new man makes Les Battersby look like the catch of the century. Fiz and Ches are in for a proper shock."

They added: "Cilla's wardrobe will be to die for. Literally. After seeing her new look, Ches might want to be an orphan again."

Filming in South Africa is due to begin next month.

Only two Coronation Street specials have previously been released. The Rover Returns! in 1999 heralded the comeback of Bet Gilroy and Reg Holdsworth, while in 2000, Viva Las Vegas! followed Jack and Vera Duckworth (Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn) on their holiday to Sin City.

Corrie is quite dull at the mo.

I quite like it at the minute :D Teresa is hilarious haha

Dev actually has a new storyline :o

Here are some pictures of Jimmi filming on location with various new characters linked to Dev - Prem Mandal (Madhav Sharma), Nina Mandal (Harvey Verdi) and Dev's date Lisa (Ruth Alexander Rubin).

Hopefully this is a sign that we'll be seeing more of them in the coming months. Otherwise, Jimmi will be following in the footsteps of the Mortons and the catching the next coach out of Weatherfield.

Also

And finally, Kenneth Cope returned to filming after a 42-year break as wheeler dealer Jed 'Sunny Jim' Stone.

Jed's now an elderly tenant who's standing in the way of one of Tony Gordon's (Gray O'Brien) new developments.

Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts needs 'L' plates judging by these on-location pictures.

Apparently, a road trip takes a detour via a hedge when Audrey (Sue Nicholls), Bill (Peter Armitage), Janice (Vicky Entwhistle) and Roger (Andrew Dunn) are headed back to the Cobbles.

What would The Stig say?

Coronation Street's Liam Connor is to be killed off at the end of the year in a 'whodunnit' murder mystery.

The former knicker factory boss, played by 31-year-old Rob James-Collier, announced his decision to quit the ITV soap in February amid fears over typecasting.

It has today emerged that his character will be 'brutally murdered' when one of three well-known Weatherfield residents exact their revenge.

A soap source told The Mirror: "Rob actually wanted his character to be killed off - a bit like Phil Middlemiss did when he also wanted the demise of his character, bookie Des Barnes.

"But at the same time it provides us with the fantastic opportunity to give the viewers some sensational TV. The producers are rubbing their hands at the prospect of the whole murder scenario."

They added: "People are sad to see Rob go as he is such a lovely bloke. But he was adamant that he wanted to leave."

Rob joined Coronation Street in 2006 and appeared in storylines which have seen his character plunge into a gorge from a cliff top, marry Maria Sutherland (Samia Smith) and sleep with his sister-in-law Carla Connor (Alison King).

Earlier this year, he won the 'Sexiest Male' gong for a second year running at the British Soap Awards and revealed soon afterwards that he is "glad" to be leaving the Manchester-based drama so he can ditch his sex symbol image.

and once again they are digging into ancient history with Irma Ogden who married David Barlow and then they both died mysteriously in the very late 60's.

TWISTED Teresa Bryant is Corrie’s latest black widow — plotting to POISON ex-hubby Jerry Morton.

Teresa, played by Karen Henthorn, plans to give the heart attack victim an overdose of his Warfarin medicine — which is used to poison rats.

Pills ... Jerry Morton

Jerry (Michael Starkey) has had no end of trouble since Teresa arrived weeks ago — but sources said fans were yet to see her at her most calculating.

An insider told TV Biz: “This will be the most dramatic storyline since Tracy Barlow went down for murdering bullyboy Charlie Stubbs.

“Teresa is a really nasty piece of work. She comes up with the plan to poison Jerry and nothing will stand in her way.

“After the heart attack, Jerry is prescribed the blood-thinning drug Warfarin and Teresa starts to scheme. She tells the doctor Jerry has mislaid his medication and desperately needs replacements.

“Then, knowing an overdose could kill him, she secretly starts crushing up the extra tablets and adding them to his food.”

Bosses were already planning to write out the Morton family, who arrived in March last year.

The source added: “We want to make them go out with a bang.”

Teresa arrived in Weatherfield to look after her four children after takeaway tycoon dad Jerry fell ill.

Viewers will be tantalised as his life is left hanging by a thread. Fans have already had a taste of Teresa’s scheming side.

Earlier this month she convinced cabbie Lloyd Mullaney — actor Craig Charles — he had drunkenly fathered her son Finlay. She demanded wads of cash as backdated child support.

Ailing Jerry discovered her scheme — but allowed her to stay on the Street after she claimed her boyfriend was beating her at home.

WEATHERFIELD gets a real facelift when hospital worker Marcus Dent becomes a Botox specialist.

Gay Marcus realises he can rake in the cash after his partner Sean Tully has the treatment to help him keep his looks.

At first Marcus, right, tries to talk him out of having the jabs, claiming the anti-ageing serum is a form of botulism.

But Sean barks back:

“Cliff Richard looks good on it.

“Have you seen my forehead? It’s got more grooves in it than the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.”

Sean (Antony Cotton, 32) gets his way and even manages to persuade Marcus (Charlie Condou, 35) to go with him.

And after being impressed with the set-up and amazed at the sky-high prices, Marcus announces he will become a Botox practitioner.

He tells Sean: “All you need to do is take a short course – and Bob’s your uncle.”

A Corrie insider revealed: “The writers are bound to milk the fact there will soon be Botox

available on the Street.

“And viewers will be wondering which resident is first to go under the needle.”

IT’S all change at the bookies in Weatherfield.

Harry and Dan Mason are being given the boot to make way for the return of bigamist Peter Barlow.

Chris Gascoyne, 39, who played the randy turf accountant, is “made up” to be heading back to the Corrie cobbles.

But Jack Ellis, 52, who plays Harry, and Matthew Crompton, 36, who plays his son Dan, were stunned to be told they were being axed after less than a year.

Matthew admitted: “It was horrible. It’s like splitting up with someone when you don’t want to. You feel sick – just like being dumped.”

A senior Corrie exec said last night: “The two outgoing actors might be a little miffed.

“I suppose the extra irony is that they are being replaced by another bookmaker.

“It’s not pleasant news – but the viewers loved Peter for being brash and cocky.

“He will be around for quite a while.”

Barlow married Rovers barmaid Shelley Unwin (Sally Lindsay, 36) while still wed to florist Lucy Richards (Katy Carmi-chael, also 36).

Chris returned briefly last year for the Tracy Barlow murder trial storyline.

He will be back on screen in October.
