Sugababes do the double as Change joins About You Now atop the UK Chart

Sugababes have done the chart double this week by staying at No.1 for a third week with About You Now, which equals the three weeks that Push The Button had in 2005m and debuting atop the album chart with new album Change, the first to fully feature Mutya Buena’s replacement Amelle. The band are also part of this week’s No.1 compilation. Their cover of Betcha By Golly Wow is on the No.1 album Radio 1 Established 1967. No.2 this week is also a non-mover for Dutch producer Fedde LeGrand and Danish singer Ida Corr. Let Me Think About It has been in the top 5 for 3 weeks now.

Mark Ronson scores his second biggest hit with the still not physically released Valerie. No.3 is an incredible result for the third track from a big selling album and the song is only likely to climb next week with the physical out. Perhaps it is the presence of Amy Winehouse that has prompted the top 3 appearance of the Zutons cover Valerie. Amy is surely 2007’s most talked about artist and only a fraction of the 1.3 million people who have her Back To Black album are likely to own Mark Ronson’s album Version, hence the large download presence of this track. Shayne Ward shows that his latest hit is no flash in the pan, sliding just a place to No.4 on its 3rd week in the top 5. Rounding off the top 5 it’s a second No.5 hit for The Hoosiers, the UK indie band who had a big summer hit with Worried About Ray. Airplay hit Goodbye Mr A has debuted at No.5 whereas its predecessor took a few weeks to reach the same peak.

Plain White T’s slide back a place with Hey There Delilah though the former No.2 single is holding up well considering that this is its 11th week in the top 10. 50 Cent’s Ayo Technology slides 3 places to No.7 this week while Sean Kingston’s former No.1 Beautiful Girls is sloping 2 places to No.8. Canadian singer Feist continues to reap the benefits of the iPod advert as 1234 scores a 2nd week in the top 10 though it is down a place to No.9. Feist’s current album The Reminder however climbs to a new peak of No.28 this week. Rounding off the top 10 is Scouting For Girls whose track She’s So Lovely has never gone past No.7 but has spent 6 weeks in the top 10 so far, making it the longest running non top 5 hit in the top 10 since XTM’s No.8 hit Fly On The Wings Of Love totalled 8 weeks in the top 10 in 2003. Macy Gray did even better in 1999 with the No.6 peaking hit I Try which spent 9 weeks in the top 10.

8 new songs join the top 40 this week. Elvis scores a new entry at No.12 with the 1959 No.4 hit A Big Hunk O’ Love. His biggest hit for quite a few weeks perhaps signals a slight decline in singles sales this week. British dance duo Freemasons have had chart success with Love On My Mind (#11, 2005) and a few other minor hits but they have become well known over the past year or so as being prolific remixers, most notably for some of Beyonce’s hits. Their remix of Beyonce’s duet with Shakira, Beautiful Liar undoubtedly helped to lift the track to No.1 as most radio stations played the Freemasons remix. They mark their own chart return with a cover of an Alanis Morissette track Uninvited which debuts at No.21 though the radio edit is not even available yet. Big Brother joint runners up, twins Sam and Amanda have joined forces to become Samanda and have covered Aqua’s Barbie Girl to debut at No.26 this week. This is the biggest success for a Big Brother contestant since first winner Craig’s 2000 single At This Time Of Year peaked at No.13. British rock act Biffy Clyrio debut at No.29 in the top 40 with Machines.

Former Moloko frontwoman scores her first solo top 40 hit with Let Me Know, though she was credited on the 2001 No.16 hit Never Enough with Boris D’Lugosch and the 2002 No.37 hit Wonderland with Psychedelic Waltons. Moloko’s highest peaking chart hit was 2000’s The Time Is Now which reached No.2 though 1999’s No.4 hit Sing It Back is perhaps more widely remembered. Timbaland scores his 3rd top 40 hit of the year with One Republic collaboration Apologize shooting from No.75 to No.32 this week. He will be hoping to follow the success of his 2 No.1 singles Give It To Me and The Way I Are, which climbs back a place to No.15 this week. British indie band Wombats debut at No.35 with Let’s Dance To Joy Division while the final new entry goes to Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger’s Baby Love which debuts at No.39 on download sales. Pussycat Dolls have had 5 top 10 hits so far all coming from PCD, their million selling debut album.

Climbers in the top 40 this week come from Phil Collins (20-14) as the drumming Gorilla on the Cadbury’s advert continues to reignite interest in the track, Timbaland (16-15), Mika’s Happy Ending (29-16) which is physically released on Monday, Fergie (19-18), Aly & AJ (33-22) though the American teen duo were expected to do better with the infectious Potential Break-Up Song. Akon climbs from No.31 to No.23 with Sorry Blame It On Me while Kanye West’s next single Good Life climbs 3 places to No.37 while the former No.1 Stronger leaves the top 10 this week down a place to No.11.

Sugababes have debuted at No.1 in the album chart with Change but there is plenty of other action this week. Eric Clapton’s complete collection debuts at No.2 while Jack Penate debuts at No.7 with his first collection Matinee. UB40 frontman Ali Campbell scores a No.9 entry with his new album Running Free. Elsewhere last week’s No.1 album from Bruce Springsteen slides to No.4 while Katie Melua eases just a place to No.3. Michael Buble debuts at No.12 while Aled Jones has a new entry at No.15. Stevie Wonder, Leann Rimes and Alter Bridge also score top 40 album entries. One entry of note is Californian singer Colbie Caillat’s Coco at No.44. The singer has been doing well in the US with her single Bubbly currently climbing the Billboard top 10, and is also big in Germany and Australia and New Zealand. The song has so far peaked at No.70 here a few weeks back but don’t rule her out having a big hit at some point in the near future.

There are physical single releases this week from Amy MacDonald, Elvis Presley, Jack Rokka vs. Betty Boo, Mark Ronson, Mika, Orson and Shapeshifters, the biggest of which should be Mark Ronson who is likely to climb to either No.1 or No.2 though the prospect of a 4th week at the top for Sugababes is looking more likely. That is of course if Gimme More, the return of US pop princess Britney Spears, doesn’t sell enough downloads to debut at No.1 next week.
