Macca pleased Beatles didn't reunite

PA Entertainment

Sir Paul McCartney has revealed that he's glad The Beatles never reunited.

The singer - who is currently going through divorce proceedings with former wife Heather Mills - told the Radio Times: "The potential disappointment of coming on and not being as good as The Beatles had been... that was a risk we shouldn't take."

Asked what it would be like if the band reformed, he added: "That's the 'what if' syndrome and I don't go there ... but since you're leading me down that flowery path, we could imagine that John would be this fantastic elder statesman, very much in command of his lifestyle, I'd be alongside him singing magnificently, George would be playing like an angel on his guitar, we'd be gelling, sound like nothing anyone's ever heard before with all the power of modern amplification.

"And, behind us, would be the world's greatest drummer. And it'd be fandabidozi!"

What do you think a hypothetical reunion would have been like?

I'm not sure it would have worked tbh, maybe a one off show, but not long term. I think the old wounds would resurface sooner or later.

The Beatles are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, however, their musical style was the greatest of it's decade - the 1960s. Had they reunited, they would've still been popular, but a large majority of their album sales would come from old fans, with a minority of new ones. Take for instance The Eagles, one of the greatest rock bands of the 1970s. Recently they released a new album, their first in over 20 years. It's selling, but a large percentage of the fans listened to them in the 70s. Same for the Rolling Stones. If you didn't listen to them then, you probably won't listen to them now. It's better to just either break-up or stop making music completely than to become a has-been. Sad, but true.
