When there are discussions on this subject I think it is very important to differentiate between Comedian & Comedy Actor.

Peter Sellers was the best Comedy actor ever, but I don't regard him as a comedian.

For the record, I would not argue against Peter's fellow Goon buddy Spike Milligan as the greatest ever comedian.

actually you are right... i was being lazy... :)

He wrote the majority of them but others were involved as well, especially Eric Sykes, whose contribution to British Comedy is slightly under-rated.

Thanks, I was about to mention Eric again there. Without Eric Sykes' help, Spike and many other writers would not have even got started.

eh?... how does that work? milligan was writing long before the goons and the goons kicked off their careers, as far as i know sykes came along much later after the goons had started.

from wiki

"His career in entertainment began during his time in a Special Liaison Unit, when he worked with Flight Lieutenant Bill Fraser. He first collaborated with Spike Milligan on a radio special called Archie in Goonland, which was a crossover between The Goon Show and the "radio ventriloquism" show Educating Archie starring Peter Brough and his dummy Archie Andrews, which Sykes had been writing. Archie in Goonland was not a success; recordings and scripts are not known to have survived. Milligan and Sykes though, collaborated on numerous Goon Show scripts, as Milligan was unable to meet the workload, and they shared an office, as colleagues at Associated London Scripts, for years afterward. In 1956-57, Sykes wrote and starred in The Tony Hancock Show"

so sykes ran alongside the goons but the goons would still have happened with or without sykes input.

Sykes started Associated London Scripts I believe and it was that setup which allowed the writing to flourish. The web says it was co-started by Milligan and Sykes, but I don't remember that being the case in what I read elsewhere.

Read Eric's autobiography as there's much more about it in there. Unfortunately Spike never got the chance to publish his own memoirs.

........ also milligan went on to be very creative, his works since were superb. sykes however never really matched his expectations, 'the plank' was superb but his sitcom 'sykes' was pretty run of the mill.

Can't argue there, much as I enjoy Sykes... there's no way it can stand up to the Q series.

Best not mention Curry and Chips though, for either of their sakes.

pmsl... how racist was that?...

I cannot say as the ‘Alternative Comedy Revolution’ has ‘damned’ the show from being ever repeated.
