Held in Parken Stadium, more than people 34 000 attended on May 12th 2001, making it the biggest live audience for an ESC to date. During the commercial break, the interval act had performances of well-known Danish acts like Aqua and Safri Duo. 23 countries took part in the ESC 2001. Only Portugal, Spain and Israel didn't use the English language in any part of their song. Even the French entry was sung in English towards its end. Greece, France and Sweden were the favourites but the winner turned out to be a huge surprise as Estonia swept the competition, leading over second place Denmark. The Greek entry was haveily tipped beforehand as the one who could give the mediterranean country its first victory since it first took part in 1974. Greece had been absent from the ESC in 1999 and 2000 and so far its best result was a 5th place in 1977. For its 2001 entry, they chose to be represented by Antique formed by two childhood friends born and raised in Sweden but with Greek parents. http://users.pandora.be/diggiloo/pic/2001/gr1.jpg http://users.pandora.be/diggiloo/pic/2001/gr2.jpg Helena Paparizou (born on January 31st, 1982 in Boras, Sweden) and Nikos Panagiotidis (Born in 1977). The two formed the group Antique in 1999 and had some success with their songs that mixed nordic dance music and Greek folk. In 2001, they made a huge impact in the ESC 2001 with "I would die for you" which represented Greece. They were accompanied by four swedish back up singers including Shirley Clamp (now on a carrier of her own) and Jenny Pettersson (also sang back up in the Swedish songs from 2003 to 2005). http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/3969/escantique1jr3.jpg The song's summery feel and catchy beat, as well as Paparizou's magnetic charisma stroke a chord and they ended up in third, behind suprise winners Estonia and the host Denmark. All countries voted for Greece, with 12 points coming from Spain and Sweden and 10 points from Israel. The UK gave 7 points. It was far and away the best ESC result for Greece at the time. "I would (Die for you)" became an international hit and the duo went on to record three more albuyms before splitting up in 2004. Then, you know what happened. Helena Paparizou was invited to represent Greece in the ESC 2005, winning this time around and has been riding high on her solo career ever since. October 17, 200717 yr Ooh - my second favourite song of the year. And that's only 'cos France had a bloody great song that year. Neither song that finished above those two deserved to have done so.
October 18, 200717 yr Author Probably my fave song from the current decade/century. Love the summery feel to it and how it grabs you right from the first guitar cord. 10 points
