Yes, it's definitely the same in the USA. I can tell immediately whether someone is a Yankee or a Southerner, and even what state they are from. California, North and South Carolina, New York, and Wisconsin accents are the easiest to identify.

 

And around my town here in Arkansas, you can even tell if someone is a 'hillbilly' or a city person (someone who grew up in town). :D It's quite fun. I think I have a very Southern accent, I sound kinda like Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind :rofl: .
