this is pretty heavy (but crude) for late '65, if it was released in say late 70 along with 'black night' and 'paranoid' and they dressed in denim and leather they could easily have been accepted in the emerging rock scene! instead, dave dee, dozy, beaky, mick and tich went on to have a string of themed, querky, pop hits. but 'hold tight' was 'rock' long before osbourne and co ever got going.

It starts off pretty well with that distorted, fuzz-driven riff and nice bit of drumming, but it quickly turns into the typical Pop of the day mate, certainly not as heavy as "Paranoid" or "Born To Be Wild".... I'd say that The Kinks and The Who did a couple of songs that could be considered "heavier" than this that predate this track....

Oh, by the way, you're just gonna HATE this mate, but Tarantino utilises "Hold Tight" on his new film "Deathproof".....

i dont think i agree with you there scott... but it matters not.

yes i know about 'deathproof' as i found some vids on youtube when searching!

I'm with Grimly on this one. It's a great track but I think The Kinks got there first witht the first heavy track. And this does turn quite poppy pretty quickly.

it finishes very heavy....

confession time... i havnt listend to the whole track, lol, so i dont know if the proper ending is on this clip :)

I think this is predated by Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere by The Who. Just listen to the guitar solo and that makes it a pop rock song.

And then You Really Got Me is much heavier and that was 64!

The Kinks - You Really Got Me (1964)

Well any track featuring a 17 year old Jimmy Page rocks.... as he stated yet again within the last two weeks in a radio interview in Canada that he did indeed play the guitar riff on this track (& also on All Day & All Of The Night in the same session) but did NOT play the guitar solo which was by Dave Davies.

Jimmy Page session playing in the 1960s also included: Marianne Faithfull's "As Tears Go By", The Nashville Teens' "Tobacco Road", The Rolling Stones' "Heart of Stone", Van Morrison & Them's "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Here Comes the Night", Dave Berry's "The Crying Game" and "My Baby Left Me", and Brenda Lee's "Is It True". He also played guitar on Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from My Friends".

lol... i have most of the too... 'snake in the grass' though was pretty lame!

my fav though is 'mr president' from '70 after dave dee had left.

I like 'Snake in the grass' for the simple reason that it was the first song I ever saw played 'live'. It was a school trip to be in the audience of the Basil Brush show! It may not have been live, of course! They were probably miming but, when you're ten, who cares?

Disregarding any ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ records there may have been I would have actually said this record as well.

Ray is very influential and a genius too. Did you all get the ‘Sunday Times’ yesterday for his new album, I did and I think it is a very good CD.
