October 19, 200717 yr Author http://i18.tinypic.com/54bbu5s.jpg That week in the summer of 2004, Razorlight’s debut album ‘Up All Night’ entered the UK album chart at No. 1 and seven days later ‘Up All Night’ was No. 3 in the official UK chart. That same week, Razorlight took on three British institutions in a row, starting with a remarkable performance on Top Of The Pops, going on to play in front of Buckingham Palace and a TV audience of millions at the Olympic Torch Parade in London and then before they even had time to bow to the Queen, being rushed across country to the most quintessential of festivals: Glastonbury. Though bottom of the bill in the Sunday morning slot, Razorlight were on a roll that they still haven’t come down from. Whilst playing a small, televised, acoustic set for Radio1’s Jo Whiley backstage at Glastonbury, veteran British TV host Michael Parkinson was watching - the story goes that he was so impressed that he resolved there and then that Razorlight must perform on his television show and so, three months later, they did. Razorlight’s rendition of their No. 9 UK single ‘Golden Touch’ complete with gospel backing singers wowed not only Parkinson but fellow guest Tom Cruise and has gone on to be screened around the world - it is the perfect illustration of Razorlight as a world class band. A year on from that momentous week Razorlight found themselves having another career changing seven days of midsummer madness. Glastonbury 2005 and Razorlight had by now graduated from first-on the previous year to headlining act - going up against one of the biggest selling bands in the world, Coldplay, on the Other Stage. The intervening twelve months witnessed Razorlight accepting awards and nominations from Q Magazine, the NME, The South Bank Show and Nordorf Robbins to name a few. They returned to singer Johnny Borrell’s backyard, literally, with two sold -out shows at London’s Alexandra Palace and played a UK tour to 40,000 people. Razorlight’s last single ‘Somewhere Else’ reached No. 2 in the UK charts (held from the number 1 slot only by a charity record). One week after Glastonbury 2005 with the sound of the crowd, wildly, singing along to ‘Somewhere Else’ still ringing in their ears Razorlight went to Hyde Park, London, on July 2nd 2005 to play for the world at Live8. That performance of just 3 songs was universally acknowledged as one of the highlights of the day, by their peers, the media, fans and a world wide TV audience of 6 Billion people. Now it’s 2006 - practically two years to the day since the release of the debut album ‘Up All Night’ and a million record sales later, Razorlight are gearing up for their sophomore album’s UK release. Produced by legendary Beatles, Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd and Roxy Music producer Chris Thomas, it will come out on 17th July 2006 and all who have heard the songs so far, are agreed that this is the record that will turn Razorlight into a globally massive band. If previous years are anything to go by, it looks like Razorlight are going to continue wowing audiences and critics, breaking personal records and generally having a fantastic summer. October 19, 200717 yr Author http://i12.tinypic.com/6bm6r9z.jpg Johnny Borrell Johnny Borrell (born Jonatan Edward Borrell, 4 April 1980, in Muswell Hill, London, England) is an English singer and guitarist, and the frontman of the band Razorlight Life & Career He grew up in and around the city of London, in Muswell Hill, and attended Highgate School, an expensive public school, with John Hassall, former bassist of The Libertines and frontman of Yeti. He currently resides in the Hampstead Heath area. He went on to form Razorlight with Carl Dalemo, Christian Smith Pancorvo (Later exchanged for Andy Burrows) and Björn Ågren. After a string of top twenty hits including "Golden Touch", their debut album Up All Night charted at number 3 in the UK, and stop-gap single "Somewhere Else" just missed out on the number 1 spot. Their self-titled follow-up album was released July 17, 2006, and debuted at number 1 in the UK album chart, giving the band their first release to top the chart. Johnny and Razorlight scored their first UK number 1 single with "America" on the 8th of October '06 Reputation & Controversy Borrell is notorious for his arrogant attitude towards the press and is famous for his proclamations of his own abilities.[1] However, like many other artists who come across negatively in NME interviews, Borrell and supporters have accused the magazine of misrepresentation and emphasising quotes out of context. To make ends meet he used to be a "rent-boy" with many clients more than willing to take on his services.[2] Interviewers have recently alluded to tension between Borrell and the two Swedish members of the band, one of whom claims Borrell spends little time with them. There was once also a monetary reward offered for video evidence of Borrell being happy slapped Borrell & The Libertines Borrell is one of "Dalston Set", a clique of indie notables connected to the early days of the London scene of the early 2000s, along with Dominic Masters of The Others, Pete Doherty, Carl Barât, John Hassall, and the Queens of Noize. It has been reported that he was briefly a stand-in bassist for The Libertines before they were signed, but in recent interviews he has claimed that this is not true. In Pete Welsh's Kids in the Riot, it is alleged that Borrell was sacked as The Libertines' bassist for unreliable behaviour and not turning up to gigs, but in general there is little animosity between the two bands, and Borrell remains friends with Carl Barât. The Libertines' song "The Boy Looked At Johnny" is reputedly about Borrell, and Razorlight album track "Don't Go Back To Dalston" is reputedly directed at Pete Doherty, telling him to curtail his drug habit. Another Razorlight song talking about curtailing a drug habit is "Up All Night" which is largely misinterpreted as being a love song. However, Borrell's former friend Pete Doherty headbutted him backstage at the Leeds Festival in 2005 Borrell & The Kooks In the May 17, 2006 issue of the NME, Borrell became embroiled in a spat with fellow NME favourites The Kooks, as a result of his remarks that their music is '$h!t' and the lead singer 'boring'. In an interview with the popular music magazine NME Borrell is quoted as saying "He models his style on me. And that record is the most horrible thing I've ever heard. It sounds like the band are literally rolling over, sticking their arse in the air and begging Radio 1 to f*** them. I heard their single on the radio the other day and it sounds like f***ing Avril Lavigne! If he can live with himself after that production, and if he feels like he has to slag people off to keep up, then I'm sure his nights are long and those moments of doubt are really painful. So f*** The Kooks. f*** 'em!" [3]" implying that The Kooks had "sold out" to the commercial music industry by signing to Virgin Records and adjusting their sound to become more marketable. Ironically, Radio 1 had held a "Razorlight week" recently before that to coincide with and promote the band's second album Borrell & Keane In late 2006, Tim Rice-Oxley, pianist and songwriter with Keane, declared their song "The Frog Prince" to be a criticism of Borrell Borell on Borrell: I am johnny, I sing and write songs for razorlight. I also play guitar and run around a lot on stage. I like humphrey bogart films when I have a hangover, leonard cohen, klaus kinski, sushi and sashimi, moto guzzi, dizzying sensations, muhammad ali, milan kundera, NYC, London and Paris, prince, al gore's inconvenient truth, the justin valli trio, tom wolfe, radiance, getaways, ginko press, nick broomfield, working out, maps, malcolm macdowell, r-e-m-, flowers at the airport, delacroix's orphan girl, kings of leon, espn classic ringside marathon, old english surnames, beethoven's "eroica", laszlo kovacs, elvis presley, the yellow ducati sport classic 1000, the first 10 second's of "long hot summer night", challenging yourself, michael de la maza, early 60s keith richard, and of course.... you. when I am happy I listen to 'keep the car running' by the arcade fire. when I am tired I remind myself that 'la vie peut etre triste mais elle est toujours belle.' October 19, 200717 yr Author http://i13.tinypic.com/4kjyis8.jpg Björn Ågren Björn Sten Ågren (born 1979) is the guitarist for the Anglo-Swedish band Razorlight. He is originally from Sweden where he met Carl Dalemo, the bassist of the band. Ågren encouraged Dalemo to audition for the band in 2002, when Ågren was already a member. He joined Razorlight after replying to an ad in the NME saying "Guitarist wanted. No pentatonics" He wrote the song "To The Sea" on Razorlight's debut album, "Up All Night", and co-wrote "I Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got" on their second album Razorlight with Johnny Borrell Source: wikipedia.org
October 19, 200717 yr Author http://i13.tinypic.com/63ug0gm.jpg Carl Dalemo Carl Dalemo is the bassist of the Anglo/Swedish band Razorlight. In his native Lidköping, Sweden, he sang and played guitar for over five years with different bands mainly his much beloved Spiral stairs. Shortly after arriving in England, he was called by friend, the guitarist Björn Ågren, who suggested that he try out for the band he was playing in. Carl had never played bass until he arrived at a Razorlight rehearsal, but his fairly simple playing immediately provided a backup for the band, allowing Ågren, drummer Christian Smith Pancorvo (later exchanged for Andy Burrows) and singer/songwriter Johnny Borrell a usual rhythmic and melodic freedom. He was once famously arrested during a May Day demonstration for urinating on Whitehall Carl on Carl: I play bass in this band. I emigrated from the clean and crispy cold north (Sweden) to dirty old London Town with all its decadence and pubs about four years ago. There I found Razorlight and I had to take a break from my normal life as keeper of peace and quiet and embrace the gutters of Camden and Soho and Seven Sisters and whatnot. Everybody has to do it at least once and if you can handle it you're sorted - ish. If nothing else its great fun! Johnny was a great teacher and Björn was my lifeline back to the old country. It sort of feels like I lost my identity a bit on the way though cause I can't really see myself moving back to Sweden not yet at least I do agree with Johnny that New York City is a damn great place maybe the best in the world but live in America? He was discovered in open auditions to replace Christian Smith Pancorvo, the original drummer for the band, who left in early 2004. Since he joined Razorlight, the group have released two albums, Up All Night which reached #3 in the UK Albums Chart (although Burrows does not perform on the record); and Razorlight which debuted at #1 in the UK chart. His first ever performance with Razorlight was at London's Bull and Gate on the 25 May 2004. Burrows has been a key figure in shaping Razorlight's sound and songs, having written the hits "America" and co-written "Before I Fall to Pieces" with Johnny Borrell Burrows also sings vocals on B-Side "Whats It All About", got Razorlight involved in an Episode of The Mighty Boosh as he is a friend of the creator, and supports Southampton FC! Andy on Andy: I am andy. I love drums, apologising and pubs. I love books, but only ones with pictures. usually ones about drums or amazing country pubs. It was their first new material following that album and became their biggest hit to date in the United Kingdom when released as a single, reaching #2 in the UK Singles Chart. The track is primarily acoustic-driven, with a shimmering effect and gradual build-up, with an insistent chorus; "and I just can't help myself, I really really wish I could be somewhere else than here". Due to the time of the song's release, and the band's appearances at many festivals and events (including a headlining slot at the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals as well as Live 8 in 2005), it became something of a summer anthem.
