Duke Bardwell worked both on stage and in the studio with The King in the mid-70s, and in all he played bass on 181 concerts. Yet he's always avoided media exposure about his association with Elvis, until now.

50 Years ago, March 20th "Elvis Was Back'!:

On Sunday March 20th 1960 Elvis and his entourage left Graceland for RCA's Nashville Studio B for sessions that would become one of his key Studio recordings of all-time. Producing seven multi-million-selling singles in just two night's work! Elvis’ original guitarist Scotty Moore was there, along with The Jordanaires and, in an inspired move, Elvis had decided to use two drummers for a more forceful sound with D.J Fontana back alongside ace session-drummer Buddy Harman. The session was arranged as top secret.

As Engineer Bill Porter noted, "The session was booked at 7 o'clock on a Sunday night. Elvis showed up at about a quarter to nine. That was normal for him. He always recorded all night long. At the very beginning of the first cut I sensed an eeriness in the control room, like somebody's behind you watching and you just want to look. Finally I did, and right behind me was Colonel Parker, Elvis, Steve Sholes (RCA's A&R) and the VP from RCA all looking at me like if I made a mistake they were going to grab me.

Nobody said anything the whole time because, as I was later told, Elvis hadn't sung in a studio in two years and they weren't sure what was going to happen! The rest is history."

That night Elvis cut ‘Make Me Know It’, ‘Soldier Boy’, ‘Stuck On You’, ‘Fame & Fortune’, ‘A Mess Of Blues’ & ‘It Feels So Right’.

Ernst Jorgensen talks about the On Stage: Legacy Edition

For Jorgensen, working on all of these albums is beyond a labor of love, it is an effort to preserve the magic of Presley's original recordings for new generations. And the eternal evolution of music technology makes his work all the more potent. Jorgenson's latest work is 'On Stage: Legacy Edition', a two-disc set compiling two live albums ('In Person' and 'On Stage') from 1969 and 1970. It was released March 23.

'Elvis Meets The Beatles':

An EIN spotlight on this famous night in 1965 when the Fab Four finally met the King. In 1965 The Beatles manager Brian Epstein initiated contact with Colonel Parker, and the decision was made that on the night of August 27, the Beatles would come to Elvis’ home for an informal get-together. Intensive security arrangements were worked out, and it was agreed that no press would be involved and no pictures would be taken or recordings made of whatever happened.

"So many things could have gone wrong," says Jerry Schilling, "If Colonel and Brian hadn’t gotten along, it wouldn’t have gotten past the phone-call stage. But there were no ego battles, and from the start it was approached as a pair of music greats coming together out of admiration for each other."

Piers Beagley and LA writer Chuck Crisafulli tell the story of this amazing night.

40 years ago today

Forty years ago today - June 8th 1970, when this picture was taken, Elvis wrapped up a marathon of recordings at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville. On Thursday June 4th 1970 he went into the studio for five days of recording. He arrived at the studio each evening around 6:00 P.M. and workseduntil the early hours the next morning. With Scotty Moore & D.J. Fontana no longer working for Elvis, he invited a complete new band. On lead guitar his favorite guitar player, James Burton. Also in the studio; Charlie McCoy (Organ, Harmonica), David Briggs (Piano) and Chip Young (Guitar). Working with Elvis for the first time were Jerry Carrigan (Drums) and Norbert Putnam (Bass). The first night the guys work ed for ten hours straight and came up with eight completed songs (Twenty Days and Twenty Nights / I’ve lost you …). ‘I’ve Lost You’ was Elvis's next single. Other songs included Bridge over Troubled Water / How the Web Was Woven, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me / Just Pretend, The Next Step is Love / Funny How Time Slips Away, Sylvia, Patch It Up...

In five days time Elvis recorded an amazing total of 35 Masters! The next morning, June 10th, Elvis returns to Graceland.

Inside Follow That Dream: Fans Remember: On The Set With Elvis

In 1961 Elvis made the movie 'Follow That Dream' in Yankeetown, Florida. In the weeks before filming began, the moviemakers had converted the tip of a marshy little island into a slice of paradise for Elvis Presley ... Two 17-year-old high school students, Johnny Jones and his twin brother Tommy, were hired to build the beach. 'Every day, they would pick us up in a white limousine to shovel dirt. Connie Francis and Elvis Presley

Connie Francis: The first time I saw Elvis in person was shortly after his mother died. He was in the audience front row center at the Sahara in Las Vegas. Knowing that, I was just dying to meet him after the show.

I sang 'Mama' and he started to cry and left the showroom. That was it that night. The next day he sent me two dozen yellow roses with a note apologizing for leaving the show, but his mother had just died and that was the reason. He could not listen to 'Mama'.

Oh, one other thing about Elvis. He was always such a gentleman. I have to say that. With me and with everyone else I've known.
