Bono, Sting and fellow Australian Barry Humphries led the tributes to Kylie Minogue last night, as she became the first woman to be honoured at the Music Industry Trusts' dinner. In a somewhat family affair, the Parlophone artist was watched on by her parents, who had flown in to London specifically for the occasion, as her sister Dannii handed her the award at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. It was the first time in the 16 years of the event, which was this year sponsored jointly by PPL and PRS for the first time, that a woman had received the award. Minogue is also the youngest recipient of the award, which has been previously been given to the likes of Sir George Martin, Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Michael Parkinson and last year Harvey Goldsmith. “To be recognised in this way and to be the first woman to receive this honour makes me immensely proud,” said Minogue who revealed in her acceptance speech that the event had raised more during the evening for its two chosen charities the Brit School and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy than in any previous year. Around £500,000 had been raised on the night. Minogue’s acceptance of the award followed the screening of a video tribute montage with contributions from the likes of Bono, Sting, Chris Martin, Guy Chambers, Australian comedian and actor Barry Humphries, EMI Recorded Music UK and Ireland chairman and CEO Tony Wadsworth and former EMI Group CEO Eric Nicoli, who said, “You are my person of the year every single year. You’re beautiful, talented, bright and you’re gracious, and you’re a brilliant example to us all.” The ceremony closed with Minogue performing a slowed down version of her first UK hit I Should Be So Lucky, accompanied by only Jamie Cullum on the piano, followed by a performance of new single 2 Hearts, featuring her full band and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears.
