Posted November 3, 200717 yr The mtvU Woodie Awards will be handed out Nov. 8 in New York City and are presented to artists who are sometimes overlooked by the mainstream media-college music at its best. Indie hip-hop band Gym Class Heroes is up for Woodie of the Year. Their competition includes Amy Winehouse, the Shins, Lily Allen and Common. Gym Class Heroes has been on the radar for sometime, but experienced an overwhelming surge of fame over the past two years. Earlier this year, they won an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. "We've been a band for ten years," lead singer Travis McCoy said in a college media press conference in which the Round Up was included Tuesday. "So winning best new artist was kind of weird." Some people attribute Gym Class Heroes' recent fame to Myspace and knowing the right people-they are close friends with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, who produced their second album. "Our whole thing is touring," McCoy said. "We've been touring for like four years. It takes mileage and busting your ass, not a hit single and the Internet." Although Gym Class Heroes' second album, "As Cruel as School Children," was released recently, a third album is already in the works. Gym Class Heroes is touring with Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's and Cute is What We Aim For on the Young Wild Things tour, but that hasn't stopped the creative process. "I met Cool and Dre at the VMAs, and they wanted in on the next album," McCoy said. "We're in pre-production; we've got platforms for songs and we'll hopefully start recording soon. We've got plans to work with Alex Turner from the Artic Monkeys and RJD2." Indie rock band Say Anything is up for the Best Video Woodie for their obscene, dance anthem, "Wow, I Can Get Sexual, Too." Their competition includes RJD2, Justice, TV on the Radio and Motion City Soundtrack. "MTV played the video for "Wow" all the time, it really helped us take off," lead singer Max Bemis said. "If you go to a Say Anything show, people know all the words to that song more than any other one." Say Anything released their latest CD "In Defense of the Genre" on Oct. 23. The album is a departure from Say Anything's previous work, as 23 of the 27 tracks are collaborations with different artists. "We wanted to put friends and people we respect in this CD," Bemis said. Bemis plans to start a side project with members of Saves the Day. Say Anything will be touring heavily through 2008. Interesting article. I'm not too sure that there's any truth in this but you never know ey? Alex has worked with Dizzee so... ^_^
