I`m not sure if it`s the real European Top 20 chart and about the songs climbing from a top 50, I have no idea perhaps it was an extended chart back then or something...no idea. All those high jumps disappeared sometime in 1991 or 1992 (along with all non-english titles ), so I suppose that either they decided to shorten it, or that the method that it was being compiled changed altogether.
November 25, 200816 yr These charts from late 1989 and early 1990 are quite interesting... I'm just not sure whether it was the same chart then - perhaps there were two different European charts (three if you include the Eurochart)... Still, these charts don't seem very unlikely to be from the real European Top 20 (I'm sure it's a bigger chart now as well but only the Top 20 is shown)... On the other hand, I inspected more closely the chart from October or November 1990, which Jamse posted on the previous page, and I'm almost sure it wasn't a real edition of European Top 20. Quite a few songs in the chart didn't appear in any European singles chart apart from the UK and even there they weren't really successful - and while such things happen now as well, there are just too many in that 1990 edition. Furthermore, some enormous hits from that time are nowhere to be seen in the chart - most shockingly, "I've Been Thinking About You" by Londonbeat. However, the biggest evidence is the presence in the chart of "All I Want Is You" by U2 and "Patience" by Guns 'N' Roses, which were hits in 1989, not 1990 (and especially the last months of 1990)! That's why I think that this was an edition of some other chart, not European Top 20. Anyway, maybe it's about time to ask MTV Europe themselves again to give us the full archive (we haven't had any success with that until now but we can keep on trying)...

Although this point has been adressed by more than one person, I´m more moved by Londonbeat`s absence on the countdown in that I didn`t even realise that it was popular at exactly this time in 1990. I was really surprised to find in my notebook Vogue, Patience and All I Want Is You in the 1990 chart. I used to write down the content of my VHS tapes that I had recorded from MTV Europe... I also found some weird ones... my frien, who is Finnish, had some random videos on his old VHS tapes and Michael Jackson's Another Part Of Me was at number one in 1988 :o:o:o

December 14, 200915 yr It's hard to say if this chart material is the same with Eurochart from Billboard,I know that Europarade was used as a base for Eurochart.We don't have to jump back to 1976,because MTV Europe exists from 01.08.1987.It will be great if there a Top 20 chart for every week since then.We need the charts from 1987,1988,1989 (up to 16.09.)and the gap between August 1990 and August 1991.
December 14, 200915 yr Here is what i will try to do:i will take Europarade Top 40 as a base and will place the songs by the number of countries they are hits in.This is maybe more fair then the points system.Watch this space for the result.
April 29, 201015 yr My brother in law had an old VHS cassette that a mate gave him. He'd recorded videos off MTV Europe. This was years ago so I must've only been a teenager when he played it to me. There was an edition of MTV European Top 20 (sadly not the entire show) and the video I remember being played was 'My Brave Face' by Paul McCartney. There was also the MTV European Top 20 of 1989 and I remember being shocked at what the no. 1 video was. :lol: Well, Madonna 'Like A Prayer' came second on the chart but somewhat surprisingly the no. 1 in the countdown was 'She Drives Me Crazy' by Fine Young Canibals. :lol: (maybe it was a really popular track across Europe?).
