Remember the show MTV Hitlist?

I don't but I remember Hit List UK, I loved it and I think it was the official UK top 40 singles chart.

I saw MTV Europe's schedule these days and in today's there is something called Euro top 20,from 14:00 to 16:00 CET (and yesterday for 30 minutes).Unfortunately my satellite operator dropped that version of MTV almost a year ago and'm not able to see today what will they show.(Instead they broadcas MTV Hits ad MTV Rocks).If someone could watch from 14:00 CET it will be good.Strangely mtv.tv hasn't been updated even with MTV,VH1 and VH1 Classics schedules from the end of last year.....

I can't sadly, but interestingly there are two types of MTV Europe:

the so called MTV Europe and MTV European :o

What's the difference? :o

In Hungary we had MTV Hungary until the 1st November but it stopped broadcasting and now we get MTV European (I think).

(Not that I'm watching it, it's full of reality shows...)

Ben, I think there is only one MTV Europe - and it's exactly the one you're able to watch as when there are advertisements, they show subtitles in Hungarian!

tsetsi, you've made a great discovery! I've investigated the situation - there is a Bulgarian website which shows the schedules for various TV channels for EACH DAY. So, according to that website, the first Saturday and Sunday when this "Euro Top Chart" was broadcast were January 11 and 12, 2014. There was no such chart during the first week of 2014 (January 4 and 5), nor during December 2013. So the European chart on MTV Europe was resurrected(?) at the beginning of this year!...

Of course, the question is: is this the same chart as before? But before I answer, let me just mention that it's broadcast on Saturdays from 12:00 to 14:00 CET and on Sundays from 14:00 to 16:00 CET.

I watched the chart on Saturday, February 15 and on Sunday, February 16. And I have to stress that this is not European TOP 20. Here is the chart:

30 Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home

29

28 Beyoncé Knowles - XO

27

26 Bastille - Of The Night

25 Capital Cities - Safe And Sound

24 Zedd & Hayley Williams - Stay The Night

23 Imagine Dragons - Demons

22 Naughty Boy & Sam Smith - La La La

21 Martin Garrix - Animals

20 John Newman - Love Me Again

19 Jason Derulo - Talk Dirty

18

17

16 Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball

15

14 One Direction - Story Of My Life

13 Katy Perry - Unconditionally

12 Avicii & Aloe Blacc - Wake Me Up!

11 Calvin Harris, Alesso & Hurts - Under Control

10 Ellie Goulding - Burn

9 Shakira & Rihanna - Can't Remember To Forget You

8

7

6 Lorde - Royals

5 OneRepublic - Counting Stars

4 Eminem & Rihanna - The Monster

3 Avicii - Hey Brother

2 Pitbull & Ke$ha - Timber

1 Pharrell Williams - Happy

Well, the chart is (at least) a Top 30. And some positions are skipped. While I was watching, I thought that the reason for this was that they were using some other chart and skipping songs they didn't want to broadcast...

I'm not quite sure that "Can't Remember To Forget You" by Shakira and Rihanna is at number 9. They were showing each position as a square in the upper left corner of the screen but I have the feeling that I didn't look at the position of "Can't Remember To Forget You" - I was so certain that it was at number 9 because I couldn't imagine MTV Europe skipping a position in the Top 10! And then they immediately played "Royals" by Lorde straight at number 6...

After having watched the chart and making some more investigations, I have even more reason to think that "Can't Remember To Forget You" wasn't at number 9:

MTV Italy is the only MTV that has been showing some kind of "Euro Top 20" chart all this time... And just look at the edition of February 15! The only difference is that "Can't Remember To Forget You" is at number 8...

Of course, this raises more and more questions. Has this "Euro Top Chart" on MTV Europe always been the same as the "Euro Top 20" on MTV Italy since the "resurrection" at the beginning of this year?

And how come this chart is (at least) a Top 30? Are positions 30-21 again taken from some methodology used by MTV Italy or are they made up by MTV Europe?...

It's all extremely interesting and I hope the next edition of the chart will give some answers!

Here is the chart of February 22:

30

29 Beyoncé Knowles - XO 1 Down

28 Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball 12 Down

27 Imagine Dragons - Demons 4 Down

26

25

24 Naughty Boy & Sam Smith - La La La 2 Down

23 Jason Derulo - Talk Dirty 4 Down

22 John Newman - Love Me Again 2 Down

21 Martin Garrix - Animals Stay =>

20 Zedd & Hayley Williams - Stay The Night 4 Up

19

18 Jason Derulo - Trumpets

17

16 Katy Perry - Roar

15 Bastille - Of The Night 11 Up

14 Clean Bandit - Rather Be

13 Calvin Harris, Alesso & Hurts - Under Control 2 Down

12

11 Ellie Goulding - Burn 1 Down

10 One Direction - Story Of My Life 4 Up

9 Avicii & Aloe Blacc - Wake Me Up! 3 Up

8 Lorde - Royals 2 Down

7

6 Shakira & Rihanna - Can't Remember To Forget You 2(?) Up

5 OneRepublic - Counting Stars Stay =>

4 Eminem & Rihanna - The Monster Stay =>

3 Avicii - Hey Brother Stay =>

2 Pitbull & Ke$ha - Timber Stay =>

1 Pharrell Williams - Happy Stay =>

Once again the Top 20 of the chart is identical to the "Euro Top 20" on MTV Italy (the edition of February 22) so now I'm basically certain that "Can't Remember To Forget You" by Shakira and Rihanna actually was at number 8 last week.

What's curious is that last week they skipped "Roar" by Katy Perry (which supposedly was at number 17) but they played it this week... while they played "Unconditionally" last week but have skipped it this week (it's supposedly at number 19)! I'm not sure why MTV Europe is reluctant to play both Katy Perry songs while they have no problem playing both "Talk Dirty" and "Trumpets" by Jason Derulo... or "Wake Me Up!" and "Hey Brother" by Avicii... Otherwise, they seem to be skipping songs that probably aren't played on MTV Europe at all - like "Jubel" by Klingande.

I'm wondering whether future editions of this "Euro Top Chart" should be posted in this topic or a new topic should be created especially for that?

Seems very odd that some positions are missing.

BTW I think you can have an own thread for the fresh charts bobiloko ;)

MTV Europe and MTV European are the same channel, it just had a name change in the early/mid 2000s to MTV European.

Some big hits in Europe this month in 99:

Would you like to see the complete old European Top 20 charts? If you've haven't already noticed them, a good samaritan has taken the time to upload at least 30 charts on Youtube with charts ranging from 1993 - 1998.

What's up guys? I'm new in buzz jack (I registered today)

I remember ET20 was the first chart I watched. In Portugal back in 1999 (when I started watching) the chart was aired Wednesday afternoon, right when I didn't have classes.

I remember I started the write the charts the first of 2000 (I remember I was pissed cause R. Kelly was #1)

I read all the hot tips and I remember in the beginning (February probably) 2000 I remember Kim Lucas "All I Really Want" was there!

Hi Jamse,

I no longer have access to the server to which I published my archive. Also I spent less time on the charts, but still I have my archive. I need to find some fitting webspace, to where I can move my site and then I can publish them again. Nice that other people think of me :)

Best regards,

Markus

Time to start filling in the 1990-gap in Markus Tolksdorf's ET20 Archive. For that I have two charts that are missing from his archive right here presented using the archives chart data.

Wow! Where did you find these 2 editions of the chart?

Well a couple of years back I posted links to about 50 ET charts from the 90's available on YT in this thread (a handful of these are no longer available). One of those happened to be the chart of 90-09-29 which is within the 1990-gap. Using the LW-positions in this edition I could almost entirely work out the previous chart.

  • 1 month later...

Let's go even further back with the oldest clip of the ET20 from 1988. Ray Cokes was probably the first regular host of the show and he appears to be presenting the chart of the year 1988 (back then a show with only the Nr 1's of a given year played in order from January to December) in which he reveals two chart-topping songs.

Nr 1's of 1988

880829 Kim Wilde - You Came

880905 Kylie Minogue - The Loco-Motion

880912 Kylie Minogue - The Loco-Motion

880919 Kylie Minogue - The Loco-Motion

Looking further back I recall a comment about someone who had a VHS tape of the ET20 taped during the summer of 1988 in which Michael Jackson "Another Part Of Me" was Nr 1 though this is yet to be confirmed.
