Posted November 7, 200717 yr Fifties compilation hits shelves thanks to 50-year ruling 09:47 | Wednesday November 7, 2007 Source: MW By Robert Ashton Delta Leisure is taking advantage of the 50-year copyright law by releasing a compilation album of 1957 hits. The Fabulous 50s features 24 tracks from 1957 that have fallen out of copyright, including Paul Anka’s hit Diana and Andy Williams’ Butterfly. Although, the fifties witnessed the birth of rock ‘n’ roll this collection mines more easy listening hits amongst the 10 US and UK number ones. The CD is released on January 14. The Orpington-based group has been quick to exploit copyright expired tracks by releasing earlier compilations containing hits from 1954, 1955 and 1956. According to audio product manager Diarmuid Brothy around half of the company’s releases are licensed and the company would licence more if the majors didn’t put “so many obstacles” in its way. “We would love to establish a relationship with a major, but there are so many obstacles such as high royalty rates and artist clearances,” he says. Copyright term on sound recordings is longer in many countries including the US, but the UK government is not supporting an extension of the term here following the controversial recommendations of the Gowers Review at the end of 2006.
