Will interview - London paper

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was a lovely interview in the London paper today. I've typed it up (one fingered!!):

You’re playing a gig for Mencap. Why?

After I won Pop Idol, people said I should do charity work and Mencap covered issues I cared about. I went to a school and was very moved by what I saw. The public’s perception of learning disabilities is rather archaic and Mencap is changing those.

What’s your take on celebs who just appear for trendy causes?

It’s interesting at the moment with everyone on environmental issues. Of course it’s good to highlight these concerns but you have to know what you are talking about. Sometimes people think they’re more important than they are and get an over-inflated view of themselves. I know I used to.

What’s celeb life like at the moment?

I’m enjoying it more and more. To begin with I focused on the albums but in the last year ands a half I’ve just been having fun. The best thing about it is the parties. But the downside is the hangovers, one of which I have now.

Any reason why you’re hitting the drink?

Well, I’ve recently become single, so that might explain it. I’m getting drunk a bit and have found myself playing this Barbra Streisand album over and over. I was in Dalston, got drunk and found one of her albums which I bought for 79p. It’s a bit tragic! I’ve never been into her, but I’ve just got scented candles and love playing it.

How’s the acting going?

It’s on the back-burner because I’m working on my latest album which is coming out next year. The acting is probably about 4 years behind my singing career but I’m constantly looking out for parts I can learn from as an actor. Being on stage is a brilliant feeling and one thing I don’t miss when I’m acting is the business side of music.

Do you watch any of the reality music shows on TV these days?

I half watch them if they’re on and I do kind of enjoy it. They’ve become part of the fabric of Saturday night TV – you catch them while you’re waiting for a cab or something. But what I find revolting is that loss of innocence, that perverted Americanism of ‘we can make you famous’. I never went into Pop Idol for those reasons. I just wanted to sing. Some of them just seem to want it for the fame, which I find a bit nauseating.

Would you buy any of their records?

I think Leona Lewis is a great singer and I’d probably buy that. She’s one of those people who you can tell really wants to sing.

You recently DJ-ed at Jodie Harsh’s club night. Would you ever drag up?

Oh, yes. I went to Matt Lucas’ wedding as a 19th century dame. I believe all men secretly love dressing in drag. The set was really good fun and I played David Bowie’s Let’s Dance, a bit of Amy Winehouse, Kelis, Armand Van Helden and a re-mix of the Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams. It was quite poppy.

Thanks to Scatty on D for posting.

So he's on his own again - I expect he only goes to the "celeb" parties so he doesn't have to sit at home alone. Love he's found Barbra S - wonder what album he bought.

Poor Will - however, he seems to be able to talk about the break up which must be a good thing.

I'm sure they both have some amazing memories..

bless my darling..i;m sure he'll be just fine.

thanks for bring that over. :D

Thanks for bringing it over munchkin

Me to but I'm also pleased he plans to do more acting. Gives us more opportunities to see him. :D

Nice little interview, thanks for posting :)

I'm glad that the acting's on the back burner while he concentrates on Album No. 4 - bring on some new music!! :cheer:

Glad that he's out partying and having fun too. Not at all concerned about the item that lots of people are 'sad' about - all I can say is "what took you so long, Will??" ;) :P

Well he's going to be having a good christmas now isn't he? all that misletoe hanging around, I bet he won't be single for long. :naughty:

Bet they'll be queuing up. Maybe he was doing a bit of advertising in the London paper. :P

Wasn't it reported he was getting plenty of male attention when he was djing.

As long as he doesn't do something stupid on the rebound! Perhaps he will have a holiday in the sun for Christmas.

Mawnin people - more good news

60 SECONDS: Will Young

Thursday, November 22, 2007 Singer Will Young has had an incredibly successful career since winning Pop Idol in 2002, notching up hits with singles Leave Right Now, Your Game and All Time Love. He's also launched an acting career, popping up in Mrs Henderson Presents with Dame Judi Dench. Will, 28, is performing at London's Union Chapel tonight in aid of Mencap. www.mencapmusic.org.uk

Why are you doing these Mencap gigs?

I've supported Mencap for the last five years. People with learning disabilities can be written off and they should have equal right and the same chances in society as everyone else.

What can we expect on the new album?

I wanted to do songs where you could really hear my voice, in the past things may have been over complicated.I wanted it to be more like I sound when I sing live. I really concentrated on getting the best sound but I don't know how to describe the style. People make comments afterwards and say 'this is New Soul' or 'this has 80s production' and I just go along with it and agree.

You're a Rufus Wainwright fan. Will you be singing about being a gay messiah?

He's an amazing musician and I can't replicate that because he plays the piano and I don't. He's brave with his lyrics and sings about interesting things. It must have an affect on my own lyrics but everything filters through - if you've seen an exhibition or if you're in a crisis or if your friend's having a crisis it all reflects in the lyrics.

Will you be previewing songs from your new album at the Mencap show?

No, we haven’t rehearsed those so we’ll be doing old stuff. I’m over two-thirds of the way through the new album. It’s the most I’ve enjoyed making an album. It’s a more relaxed process this time. The last one was hard work, it followed an album that sold 1.6million and I felt the pressure.

What’s been your worst experience on stage?

My trousers split in Portugal and I wasn’t wearing any pants underneath. That was unpleasant – probably more for the audience than for me. I was doing a Madonna-lunge dance move and the trousers split. It was in front of 300 people. I had to wrap a towel around me and not move for the rest of the set.

What are the highs and lows of having a twin?

There aren’t any lows. It’s great. It’s having someone who is your best friend. When you’re growing up, you have someone who understands how you’re feeling about things. It’s a very close bond.

When was the last time you said: ‘Don’t you know who I am?’

I never say it. If they don’t know who you are, how is that going to make a difference? There’s no point. It’s a ridiculous phrase.

When did you last act like a diva?

I don’t have diva moments very often but I can be a bit hot-headed. I’m getting better as I get older. I was recently a bit hot-headed with someone, then sent them a text saying: ‘Sorry I was a d***’, ten minutes later. I hadn’t done something and tried to get out of it by blaming someone else but it was completely my fault.

What is your favourite item of clothing?

I’ve got a cashmere trench coat which was about £1,400, and a Dior suit. That was two-and-a-half grand. I’ve had a lot of wear out of that suit. At the moment, I’ve got this ruffled dinner-jacket shirt which makes me look like I’m going to a really bad 1970s bar mitzvah. It cost £10 from a place in Covent Garden and I wore it to Fashion Rocks.

What’s the worst job you’ve had?

I had to rip labels off T-shirts in a T-shirt factory then different labels got sewn on again five minutes later. I asked: ‘Why don’t you just get T-shirts without labels to begin with?’ and I got told I was ‘up my own arse’. The exact words were: ‘Shut your mouth and keep on ripping.’ I was only there for two hours, I couldn’t do it. I then sold Sky TV boxes outside Sainsbury’s wearing a bright yellow fleece surrounded by empty cardboard boxes that looked like they had Sky boxes in. I don’t know what that was about. I think I was supposed to get people to sign up to Sky. I lasted a day and a half.

You did a nature programme for the BBC. What are your tips for saving the gorilla from extinction?

I’d love to go back and visit the gorilla sanctuary in Cameroon. I have a lot of respect for the people who work there. It’s all about where you get wood from. You have to educate people. It’s like with free-range eggs. No one wanted free-range eggs until people were educated about where their eggs came from. It’s the same with other products. People need to know about where their furniture and things come from and be aware of the issues around destroying the rainforests. It’s a lot to deal with.

How’s the acting going?

I haven’t done any acting recently because I’ve been concentrating on the album. I’ve been doing music for years but only been acting for a year and a half so I don’t see it as an instant thing. I’m looking for small parts to build up my experience. I absolutely love it. It’s great to have the two careers side by side.

What’s your favourite film?

As an actor, I’d love to be in a Mike Leigh film. As a filmgoer, I’ve just seen The Lives Of Others and thought it was amazing.

Thanks to Pauline and Jo on D.

:cheer: :w00t:  Can't wait for this. I bloody love you William Young.

Found this review in The London Light Paper today 23rd

on my journey back from London:

"Good Will Hunting Lines"

"Lily's done it, Amy's done it; and now there's a new name on the list of shame for singers who have forgotten the words to their songs - Will Young.

Luckily, his performance didn't come with the attendant drunken slurring or a two-hour wait that you would normally expect with memory loss.

And the audience at the gig for Mencap's Little Noise Sessions didn't seem to mind too much, after he proffered grovelling apologies between every song.

"I know it's unprofessional, but I haven't done a gig in a long time and I'm very forgetful." Young said, as he pulled a music stand towards him. Reliance

on his notes made for a fairly static performance - although he did indulge in a bit of arm flapping and squirming on the spot like a ticklish schoolboy - but it was Young's voice that sold this accustic show to the crowd.

The newly single star crashed into a beautifully subdued performance of "Leave Right Now" with some startlingly musical improvised wailing, while his vocals on "Light my Fire" reverberating round the Chapel's vaults, reminded us why he made it through the post Pop Idol market where others failed.

In the age of Leona's emotionless technicality ramblings, it's good to see someone singing from the heart. Now all he needs to do is hurry back into the studios"

FOUR **** out of four!

Lovely picture of Will from last night - sorry I can't copy it,

Thanks for bringing it across SWF. With a voice like his who cares if he sang different lyrics - the emotional tie was there for us - that's all that matters.

About time someone else agreed.

Thanks for bringing that across Bev.

Says it all doesn't it. Will at his best. There's a big hole in the music world when Will isn't around. So proud to be a fan of this awesomely talented man.

This is the bit which amused me, especially the highlighted bit. Thanks for bringing it over.
