.......... you see, what really pisses me off is the way the values that we, the punk generation fought for and embraced, have been thrown out by the younger 'celeb culture' generation. whilst racism and homophobia are still on track to be regarded as unacceptable, sexism has turned round 180 degrees. whilst 25 years ago it was wrong to portray women as mere sex objects and second class citizens, it seems that (possibly since 'girl power' <_< ) its now ok for women to be portrayed in the media as 'sexy'... (although theve confused 'sexy' with 'slutty' <_< ).

id sooner see a society where women didnt feel they have to dress like a $l*t, revealing as much as they can, in order to be regarded as sexy or attractive to men. wether or not dress alone contributes to assult/rape cases is hard to guage... but id suggest its no co-incidence that sex related crimes are at an all time high, at the same time society is accepting of 'tart' culture.

im suggesting that all individuals should take responsability for their own actions. you dont leave a lap-top in your car... would you deserve to have it nicked?... no of course not, but you should be able too.. any one with any common sense wouldnt put temptation on full view. does a little old lady who dares to wander out at night deserve to get her pension nicked?... no, of course not, she should be able to walk the streets at any time of day in full confidence that she wont get robbed..... but in reality they dont go out, they dont put temptation in anyones way, it courts trouble even though it shouldnt!

Paragraph 1 - Totally see your point there actually.. The whole Feminist ideology has either been largely forgotten or totally and utterly maligned and misrepresented by the media.. The media at large associates Feminism with "hairy, dungaree wearing, man-hating lesbos", at totally negative stereotype, and a completely false one as well.. Feminists were NOT anti-men, they were just pro-woman, and at the time, it was completely necessary... There were some aspects of feminism (such as Andrea Dworkin's completely wrong-headed defence of Myra Hindley..) that went rather OTT, but I think in general they really had to stir up sh!t in the way they did in order for their voices to be heard... Of course, the male-dominated media has given the completely false impression of Feminism in this day and age to the extent that women themselves feel no kinship with it... "Girl Power" in the Spice Girls sense has absolutely nothing to do with Feminism, however in the early 90s sense of Huggy Bear/Bikini Kill and the "riot grrrl" movement, that was almost certainly inspired by Feminism...

Paragraph 2 - Again, a good point, but I would say your issue here is more with the Fashion Industry and what it peddles to women and girls.. The fashion industry sexualises young girls at an alarmingly young age these days, and the fact that wearing fur seems to be becoming acceptable these days as well.. <_< I think we can link up the media and the fashion industry here, BOTH had a vested interest in trashing the Feminist movement, because the Feminist movement rejected the values of both the mainstream media and fashion industries...

Paragraph 3 - Again, I can see the point you're trying to make, but nobody says the little old lady was "asking for it" do they....? No, I really do think that rape is all to do with power and control, some men see a girl with the confidence to wear a short skirt or mini dress and in their tiny, warped brains think to themselves "who does this b**ch think she is...? I'll take her down a peg or two....".

but thats my very argument... the little old lady wasnt or shouldnt be regarded as 'asking for it'... but we all know that if she went out in the dark, or even light in some areas, she would be putting herself at risk because we dont live in a safe world where she can do wtf she wants..

same with valuables being left in cars... hide them, put them out of sight, dont leave them...

i DETEST the fact that i had to spend hundereds of pounds making my van 'theif proof' (or as safe as it can be), ive had not only imobilisers and alarms fitted, but secret switch that breaks the electrical circuit.... ive had the inside reinforced and heavy metal brackets fitted to secure my power tools... ive HAD to take responsibility to extremes in order to prevent crime against my equipment. I SHOULDNT HAVE TO DO THIS.... those tools belong to ME, paid for by my hard work, no one has the right to take them. this is a sad endictment of the real world we live in...

this reasoning has changed my view, i too used to think that girls can wear wtf they want.... but there are potential consequences for our actions, and i believe that prevention is better then cure.... even if the price we pay isnt very palatable.

I dont really think you can compare making your van thief-proof with the right of a woman to wear a short skirt and be able to walk down the street unmolested.... Theives tend NOT to break into cars that are well secured, but a rapist does not only rape women who "dress like tarts", which is kinda where the comparison falls down.... Old women in their homes have been raped, nuns have been raped, muslim women wearing a full bhurka have been raped.... Clothing does not really enter into the mindset of a rapist, they want to control..... Whereas a well-secured van would deter a thief, women dressing "soberly" will not necessarily deter a would-be rapist....

yes but not ALL.... we have already established that a committed rapist will attack regardless, im on more about the 'opportunist'. even if only 10% of abuse and rapes are perpetrated upon 'skimpily dressed ' woman...thats still 10% that could be avoided! and id suggest that the real figure is higher.

Thing is though, the "opportunist" rapist for the most part uses date rape drugs like Rohypanol, "roofies" and GHB (which are almost impossible to actually test for), so unless you are suggesting that women should just stay at home like "good little girls" and not go out anywhere, ever, then I dont actually take your argument about clothing being much of a factor.. The male abuse of power is totally, 100% wrong, simple as.... And it is a mark of our mysognistic society where anyone actually makes an arguement that a woman in any way, shape or form is somehow complicit in her own rape.... We may not go around flogging them in the streets like they do in Iran or Saudi Arabia, but the inherent, psychological mysoginy within our society is every bit as damaging and results in the attitude of "she was asking for it" and leads to the fact that only 5% of rape cases are successfully prosecuted.. In a poll done a couple of years back it transpired that over a third of the country actually believed a woman was somehow "responsible" for her own rape... Now, looking at that in terms of criminal cases, you're talking about four members of a jury.... No wonder there are so many acquitals.....

no i dont suggest that they stop at home, however you do highlight a salient point.... girls are now aware of date rape drugs and are being told to be responsible and not leave drinks unattended.

many skimpily dressed, drunk, girls also behave in a manner that is frankly dangerous. they flirt like fcuk, then go cold... sending out mixed messages IS irresposible and girls in that situation ARE courting danger simply because if anyone thinks that ALL men are honourable, balanced individuals... THEY ARE NOT. no wonder so many 'get away' with it...

sorry, but i simply dont dig the 'women can do wtf they want, regardless of any potential consequences'... because (again....yawn) this is not a perfect world and there are people who will exploit others.... pity, but thats reality.

im getting dizzy....

I think the media and the fashion industry directs most of this "ladette", "chavvy slag" culture anyway tbh... I mean, just look at who the media holds up as "role models" for young women.... Page 3 models, Jordan, Amy Wino-house, Cheryl Cole, Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, etc, as opposed to intelligent, feminist icons....... And if you look at the way the media sexualised and exploited teenage pop star "sensations" such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, Jojo, TaTu, etc...... Not nice. At all..... A far cry from the era of Madonna, Siouxsie, Debbie Harry and Cyndi Lauper who were encouraging young girls to be strong, think for themselves and express themselves....
